The 2022 vision of future connectivity was not simply “6G replaces 5G.” It anticipated a networked world built from several complementary technologies: evolving cellular networks, faster Wi-Fi, satellite links and terrestrial infrastructure. Its specific predictions—including 6G, 46 Gbps Wi-Fi and satellite-enabled low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs) connecting trillions of devices by 2030—were forecasts, not confirmed specifications or guaranteed outcomes. The useful question now is how these technologies fit together, and what still depends on deployment, economics and policy.

What the 2022 forecast meant—and what it did not establish

In an EE Times article published February 8, 2022, Pablo Valerio described an outlook in which 6G cellular networks, 46 Gbps Wi-Fi and satellite-enabled LPWANs would connect trillions of devices in 2030. Read that as a period forecast about the direction of connectivity, not as proof that those capabilities are already broadly available, that 2030 outcomes are assured, or that every user will experience those headline rates.

The 46 Gbps figure belongs to that forecast; the material available here does not establish it as a measured consumer Wi-Fi service speed or specify the conditions under which it could be achieved. Likewise, “trillions of devices” is an outlook, not a verified count. Expectations about 6G remain tied to research, proposed use cases, spectrum decisions and business models rather than a settled consumer launch timetable.

What comes after 5G?

After 5G comes continued evolution of 5G networks and research into 6G, alongside Wi-Fi, satellite and other non-terrestrial networks, and fixed terrestrial connections. These systems address different places and jobs; a newer cellular generation does not make every other access technology obsolete.

5G deployment has stages

The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s 2023 UK Wireless Infrastructure Strategy distinguishes non-standalone 5G from standalone 5G. Non-standalone 5G uses a 5G radio access network connected to a 4G core. Standalone 5G uses a 5G core and is a step toward capabilities such as low-latency communications, network slicing and support for large numbers of IoT connections in particular settings.

Those are network capabilities and potential use cases, not a promise that an individual customer will always receive a particular latency, reliability level or device capacity. Results depend on the network design, coverage, spectrum, equipment and service.

6G is a research and policy horizon

The UK strategy describes a research and development roadmap and anticipates broader rollout and adoption beyond 2030; it does not establish a precise commercial launch date. The OECD’s Digital Economy Outlook 2024 (Volume 1) similarly treats 6G as evolving through research, use cases, spectrum questions and business models. The visions it summarizes were being discussed as of February 2023, so they should be understood as a snapshot of developing expectations, not final standards.

How the main connectivity options fit together

No access type is universally best. The practical choice depends on geography, the network role, performance needs and the cost of building infrastructure. The following summarizes roles described by the UK strategy, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), and the OECD; it is not a controlled comparison of consumer services.

Technology Typical role in the connectivity mix Where it can fit Important qualification
Cellular, including 5G Mobile access and connections for devices; standalone 5G can support features such as network slicing and many IoT connections in particular settings. Areas served by a mobile network, including transport routes and places where mobile access is useful. Coverage and performance depend on the specific deployment. A capability in a network design does not guarantee a particular user experience.
Wi-Fi Local-area connectivity, including indoor connections that can complement cellular service. Homes, workplaces and other locations with a suitable local network and broadband connection. Useful performance depends on the router, client-device compatibility, broadband service, local rules and the layout of the space.
Fixed wireless access A fixed last-mile broadband alternative to a wired connection. Locations where deploying fibre is difficult to do affordably, according to the UK strategy. Whether it is a practical alternative depends on local network availability and deployment conditions.
Satellite and other non-terrestrial networks Remote broadband, cellular backhaul and narrowband IoT links are among the roles described for satellite. Rural, remote and northern communities, as well as other areas where terrestrial infrastructure is limited. Satellite is a complement for specific coverage and network needs, not evidence that every location or service has equivalent capacity or performance.
Fixed terrestrial infrastructure Wired connectivity and the infrastructure that can support local access and network links. Places where terrestrial networks can be deployed and maintained. Cost, geography and deployment conditions affect whether a particular infrastructure option is viable.

The OECD’s 2024 outlook describes future connectivity as a combination likely to involve Wi-Fi and non-terrestrial networks alongside terrestrial connectivity, with greater attention to indoor connectivity. It identifies policy objectives, spectrum and regulation, technology development and use cases, and business models as interacting influences on how that mix develops.

Can satellite provide connectivity in remote areas?

Satellite can extend connectivity where terrestrial infrastructure is sparse or difficult to build. The UK strategy identifies satellite’s relevance to remote broadband, cellular backhaul and narrowband IoT links. Canada’s regulator also describes a role for satellite in rural, remote and northern communities. Those roles make satellite part of the connectivity toolkit; they do not establish uniform availability or performance across those regions.

Satellite demand expectations should be dated and geographically precise. ISED’s 2022 Consultation on the Spectrum Outlook 2022 to 2026 forecast compound annual growth of 8.5% in demand for satellite services in North America through 2029. That was a forecast made in 2022, not a measured growth rate or a statement about demand everywhere.

Why connectivity advances do not happen on technology alone

New radio capabilities need spectrum, network infrastructure, providers willing to invest and a viable way to pay for deployment. The UK strategy highlights a costly investment environment, uncertainty about additional revenue, security, resilience and supplier diversity. The OECD also points to spectrum management and business models as factors shaping next-generation networks.

Geography changes the economics. Fibre may be difficult to deploy affordably in some places, making fixed wireless relevant as a last-mile option. Satellite can help serve remote communities or connect parts of a mobile network, while Wi-Fi can address local and indoor needs. Decisions about which technology to use therefore depend on the service need and local conditions as much as on the generation label.

Capacity growth also puts pressure on networks. The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology reported in its 2023 strategy that the amount of mobile data provided over public mobile networks in the UK had grown by an average of 40% per year over the preceding decade. That is a UK historical average for that period—not a global rate or a forecast for future growth.

Where Wi-Fi 7 fits in the longer-term picture

Wi-Fi is part of the broader connectivity ecosystem, particularly for local and indoor access; it does not replace cellular networks, satellite or the broadband connection feeding a local network. ISED’s 2022 consultation discussed the Wi-Fi 7 equipment ecosystem and spectrum considerations. It expected the standard to be published in 2024 and compatible equipment to follow; those dates were expectations stated in 2022, not a current prediction or confirmation of present-day product availability.

A Wi-Fi 7 router is one example of a physical product category associated with this evolution, but its usefulness depends on compatible client devices, the broadband service, local rules and the layout of the home or workplace. A router alone cannot guarantee a particular internet speed or coverage.

How to judge future-network claims

  • Check whether a number is a forecast or a measurement. The 2022 6G, 46 Gbps Wi-Fi and trillion-device statements were outlook claims, not verified outcomes.
  • Look for geography and date. The 40% annual mobile-data growth figure applies to public mobile networks in the UK over the decade preceding the 2023 strategy. ISED’s 8.5% satellite-demand figure was a North American forecast through 2029 made in 2022.
  • Separate a network capability from a user guarantee. Features such as low latency or large-scale IoT support depend on the network and service deployment.
  • Ask what part of the connection the technology serves. Mobile access, indoor local connectivity, last-mile broadband, backhaul and remote IoT links are different jobs.
  • Consider deployment constraints. Spectrum, regulation, infrastructure cost, security, resilience and business models affect whether a proposed capability reaches a particular place.
