Short answer: In Stuff’s brief 2022 demonstration, Samsung’s 8K Neo QLED showed slightly more detail than 4K on a 77-inch screen, but the advantage was harder to notice on smaller panels. For many buyers, 4K remained the more sensible choice; 8K made the strongest case when paired with a very large screen and suitable content.

What the 2022 hands-on test actually showed

Connor Jewiss’s May 15, 2022 Stuff report was based on short demonstrations at Samsung’s UK Tech Summit, not a calibrated laboratory test or long-term review.

8K versus 4K detail

Samsung demonstrated 4K and 8K Neo QLED pictures on a 77-inch screen. Stuff reported that 8K appeared to resolve slightly more detail at a typical viewing distance. The difference was less obvious on a smaller panel. The demonstration also contrasted native 8K footage with 4K material upscaled to 8K, so it did not establish how every source or screen size would perform.

HDR, color and black levels

In an HDR comparison involving a reference monitor and a competing television, the Samsung set appeared closer to the reference in its handling of bright highlights, color and blacks. Stuff also observed more contrast than the previous year’s model and connected that impression with Samsung’s 14-bit contrast-mapping claim. The same short demonstration appeared to give up some absolute black depth, an area where OLED still looked stronger to the reporter. These are event impressions, not controlled head-to-head measurements.

Which 2022 Neo QLED models were available?

Samsung’s line differed by market. The US announcement listed two 8K families, while the UK and European announcement also included a QN700B 8K range.

Region 8K Neo QLED models and sizes 4K Neo QLED families
United States QN900B and QN800B: 65, 75 and 85 inches QN95B, QN90B and QN85B: 43 to 85 inches across the series
UK/Europe QN700B: 55, 65 and 75 inches; QN800B and QN900B also listed QN95B, QN90B and QN85B

What Samsung claimed about the technology

  • Neural Quantum Processor 8K and AI upscaling were announced for the 8K models.
  • Quantum Mini LED backlighting and Quantum Matrix Technology were part of the Neo QLED platform.
  • Samsung described 14-bit processing or contrast mapping in its 2022 announcements.
  • QN900B materials highlighted a slim Infinity One design, anti-reflective treatment, 4K/144Hz capability and upgraded audio hardware.
  • Samsung promoted object-tracking sound, Dolby Atmos support, Tizen updates, smart-home functions and Gaming Hub, but feature availability varied by model and region. Samsung said 4K at 144Hz could vary by model, and Gaming Hub was planned for summer 2022.

Those are manufacturer specifications and launch claims; they do not independently verify picture quality.

4K or 8K: how to decide

Choose 8K when the screen is very large

The only direct resolution comparison in the Stuff report used a 77-inch display, where the reporter noticed a small detail advantage. That observation does not create a universal size cutoff, but it suggests that larger screens are the more convincing setting for 8K.

Choose 4K when value and content matter most

Stuff’s conclusion was that 4K would suit many people. Native 8K programming was limited, so much viewing depended on upscaling. Samsung said upscaling results could vary with source content. A 4K Neo QLED such as the QN90B therefore remained a practical comparison rather than an inferior version of the same proposition.

Compare picture character, not just pixel count

The hands-on report favored Samsung’s demo for HDR brightness, color and perceived contrast, while giving OLED the edge for deepest blacks. Your choice may depend more on room brightness, viewing habits and tolerance for blooming than on resolution alone.

Check the exact size-specific specification

Samsung’s US comparison chart warns that QN90B variants at 43 and 50 inches differ from larger versions in areas including HDR, anti-glare and viewing-angle behavior, sound and motion features. HDMI 2.1 details and refresh capabilities also need to be checked against the exact model and size.

Prices and buying conditions

Stuff reported 2022 UK starting prices of £740 for a 43-inch 4K model and £2,799 for a 55-inch 8K model. These figures date from May 2022 and are not current prices.

Because the QN900B, QN800B, QN700B and QN90B are 2022 models, assess any present listing by:

  • new, refurbished or used condition;
  • seller reputation, warranty and return window;
  • the full regional model suffix;
  • panel size, HDMI and refresh-rate specification; and
  • actual availability and price at the time of purchase.

What this first impression cannot prove

  • Long-term reliability or software support.
  • Calibrated color, HDR or motion performance.
  • Uniform results across every diagonal and regional variant.
  • Whether 8K remains worthwhile for your viewing distance and content library.
  • A definitive ranking against OLED or other brands.

Stuff explicitly described the experience as brief hands-on time and hoped to arrange full reviews later. Treat the article as an informed snapshot of Samsung’s demonstration, not as a final buying test.

The Bottom Line

Samsung’s 2022 8K Neo QLEDs showed a visible but modest detail advantage in Stuff’s 77-inch demonstration. Unless you want a very large screen and accept the limits of today’s 8K content and pricing, a correctly specified 4K Neo QLED is likely to be the more practical choice.
