The 2015 BMW X5 makes a strong case as a performance-oriented luxury SUV for long trips: it combines brisk engines, confident handling and a quiet, supple ride. Its technology and comfort features vary by drivetrain, package and build, however, and its premium price and child-sized optional third row keep it from being the best choice for every buyer. “Best” is an editorial judgment here, not a result established by a comprehensive comparison with rivals.
What changed for the 2015 BMW X5?
BMW’s US model-year update revised the eight-speed automatic transmission and published quicker 0–60 mph figures for all four versions than the figures it had given for 2014. BMW’s update described a “Technical update for the 8-speed automatic transmission leading to better efficiency and faster acceleration:” The release quantified the acceleration changes, but did not give a specific fuel-economy improvement for the transmission update. BMW’s 2015 model-year update also lists equipment and package changes.
As of October 2014 production, BMW planned to increase displacement in the 35i’s N55 engine from 2,979 cc to 3,004 cc. That production-timing detail does not establish that every 2015 X5 has the larger engine; check the specific vehicle’s build information.

BMW’s initial US prices included the $950 destination and handling charge. On January 2, 2015, BMW announced revised MSRPs effective January 5; those adjusted prices superseded the initial figures from that date. These are historical new-car prices, not current used-car values.

BMW’s model-year update gives the 2015 acceleration figures. Its stated 2014 comparison figures were 6.2 seconds for both 35i versions, 6.7 for the xDrive35d and 4.9 for the xDrive50i. Edmunds lists the output and EPA-referenced economy figures in its 2015 X5 review.

35i: choose rear- or all-wheel drive
The 35i pairs a turbocharged six-cylinder engine with strong output for everyday driving. The sDrive35i is the rear-wheel-drive choice; the xDrive35i adds all-wheel drive and has a slightly lower Edmunds-listed combined fuel-economy estimate. The numbers do not, by themselves, establish which is preferable in a particular climate or on a particular route.

xDrive35d: torque and the highest listed economy
The diesel combines lower horsepower than either gasoline six-cylinder or the V8 with the lineup’s highest listed torque and EPA-referenced combined economy. It is the choice to consider if those characteristics match your driving, but the diesel also has a specific EGR-cooler recall concern reported for some vehicles; verify its VIN and repair record before purchase.
xDrive50i: quickest acceleration, highest fuel use
The V8 has the lineup’s highest listed horsepower and torque and BMW’s quickest published 2015 0–60 figure. It also has the lowest EPA-referenced combined economy in Edmunds’ figures and carried the highest original price. It suits a buyer prioritizing acceleration over fuel consumption and initial cost.

Is the X5 a good grand-touring SUV?
Edmunds describes the X5 as an SUV for drivers who want something closer to a sport sedan than a truck. It praises confident handling, a quiet and supple ride over rough streets and freeways, and rapid acceleration across the engine families. Those traits make the X5 a credible long-distance vehicle: it can cover highway miles with composure while retaining a more engaging driving character than a utility-first vehicle.

The compromise is value and passenger space. Edmunds identifies the price as high and says the optional third row is suitable only for little kids. It points to the Acura MDX and Infiniti QX60 as less expensive alternatives with more accommodating third rows. The X5 is therefore more persuasive for buyers who prioritize driving and refinement than for families seeking an affordable, genuinely roomy three-row vehicle. This evidence does not establish a universal winner over performance or family-focused rivals.

What technology and comfort equipment did it offer?
The X5’s technology story depends on the individual car’s trim, package and build. BMW changed standard and optional equipment for 2015, so a feature available somewhere in the range should not be assumed to be present on every example.
- The Sport Leather steering wheel became standard.
- Comfort Access keyless entry became standard on the xDrive50i.
- Bluetooth audio streaming moved to the standard 6NH hands-free Bluetooth and USB audio connection. Remaining Enhanced USB/Bluetooth and Smartphone Integration functions were available together as a separate $500 option.
- The Premium Package changed to include four-zone automatic climate control.
- Soft-close doors became a standalone $600 option.
- Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection was a $2,300 option.
BMW also changed Executive Package and trim-line pricing and content; its model-year update is the source for the full 2015 equipment changes. For a used X5, check the original window sticker or a VIN-specific build record rather than relying on a generic trim description.
What should you check before buying a used 2015 X5?
Confirm equipment, production details and documentation
- Match the vehicle’s VIN to its original sticker or build record to confirm drivetrain, packages and optional driver-assistance or comfort features.
- Check production details if the 35i’s October 2014 displacement change matters to your decision.
- Review service and repair records, especially for recall work and diesel-specific repairs.
Check recall status by VIN
Edmunds’ recall summaries describe campaigns affecting defined vehicles or build groups, not every 2015 X5. Examples include a diesel EGR cooler leak that could contribute to intake-manifold melting and fire risk; an airbag inflator issue affecting specified 2014–2015 X5 groups; a head-protection system airbag connection issue for specified build dates; and a rear seat-belt attachment issue involving a small group equipped with the optional rear comfort seat. Edmunds also lists a high-pressure diesel fuel-pump recall. The diesel EGR campaign later received a remedy notice. Check the vehicle’s VIN for open and completed recalls and obtain documentation for repairs rather than inferring coverage from model year alone.
