This August 21, 2008, Data Center Knowledge roundup covered four distinct data-center developments: a possible IBM expansion in Poughkeepsie, a planned Frost Bank facility in San Antonio, and acquisitions by Northgate Technologies and Telecom Real Estate Services (TRES). It records announcements and plans from that period, not the projects’ later completion or present-day status.

How the four data-center developments compared

Organization Type and location Reported size and capacity Demand rationale or schedule
IBM Potential expansion at its Poughkeepsie, New York site Size and power capacity not stated IBM described discussions about expanding an existing customer data center; no construction schedule was stated.
Frost Bank Planned construction in Westover Hills, San Antonio 70,000 square feet; approximately 10 acres of a 25-acre plot Frost Bank reported a $50 million project, with completion targeted for the fourth quarter of 2009.
Northgate Technologies Acquisition of Reuters’ London data center by subsidiary Axill Europe 8,000 square feet The acquisition was intended to serve clients waiting for additional space and power; purchase price and schedule were not stated.
TRES Acquisition in Rancho Cordova, a Sacramento suburb 69,626-square-foot facility, including 40,000 square feet of 24-inch raised floor and approximately 27,000 square feet available for servers operating at over 100 watts per square foot Customer-demand rationale and schedule were not stated.

IBM: a possible Poughkeepsie expansion

IBM’s item was separate from the company’s announced new disaster-recovery data centers. IBM spokesman Jeff Couture said, “We have discussed the potential expansion of an existing customer data center at our Poughkeepsie site, but this is a separate project.” That language describes a possibility under discussion, not a confirmed construction start. The 2008 roundup gave no facility size, capacity, or timeline for the potential expansion.

Frost Bank: planned 70,000-square-foot San Antonio facility

Frost Bank confirmed plans for a 70,000-square-foot data center in Westover Hills, San Antonio. The bank reported a $50 million project on approximately 10 acres of a 25-acre plot. Officials said the land had been cleared and prepared for construction, and targeted completion for the fourth quarter of 2009. That was a target reported in 2008; the roundup does not establish whether or when the facility was completed.

Northgate: Reuters data center acquisition in London

Axill Europe, a Northgate Technologies subsidiary, acquired Reuters’ 8,000-square-foot London data center for an undisclosed sum. The stated reason was to meet a waiting list of clients seeking additional space and power. The 2008 article also attributed a shortage of data-center space and power in central London to power being diverted for the Olympic site and Crossrail projects. This describes the circumstances reported at the time, not a current market condition.

The article specified 40,000 square feet of 24-inch raised floor and approximately 27,000 square feet available for servers operating at over 100 watts per square foot. It did not give a purchase price, acquisition schedule, or customer-demand rationale.

What this 2008 roundup does—and does not—establish

The four items reflect different kinds of activity: IBM was discussing a potential expansion, Frost Bank was preparing a new build, and Northgate and TRES had made acquisitions. The published details describe those announcements and facilities in 2008. They do not establish later ownership, operating performance, project completion, or current status.
