You can watch movies for free without resorting to torrent sites, suspicious download buttons, or unauthorized uploads. The safest options fall into three groups: ad-supported streaming services, library-backed apps, and archives that identify the rights attached to individual films.
There is an important difference between streaming and downloading. Most free commercial services stream movies and do not provide permanent video files. Hoopla supports controlled offline viewing for many titles, while Internet Archive downloads depend on the rights and files provided for each item. A title being free to watch does not automatically mean it can be downloaded, modified, or redistributed.

20 legal places to stream or download movies
1. Tubi
Tubi is a free, ad-supported service that does not require a subscription or credit card. Basic viewing is available without an account; selecting Register lets you synchronize lists and continue watching across supported devices.
Tubi lists support for web browsers, Android, iOS, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation, Samsung Smart TVs, Sony Smart TVs, and Xfinity X1. It advertises streaming rather than movie-file downloads, so use it when you want to watch online.

2. Pluto TV
Pluto TV combines free live channels with on-demand programming. It is useful if you want a television-style guide as well as movies you can select on demand.
Pluto’s web app requires JavaScript. If JavaScript is disabled, the site displays “You need to enable JavaScript to run this app.” Pluto’s regular service is streaming, not a source of downloadable movie files.
3. The Roku Channel
The Roku Channel offers thousands of free shows and movies, Roku Originals, and more than 350 live channels. It is available through Roku devices, the Roku Channel website, and the Roku mobile app.

4. Plex Free Movies & TV
Plex Free Movies & TV provides a separate ad-supported catalog. This catalog should not be confused with Plex’s personal-media-server feature, which streams files from your own library to devices on the same local network.
In other words, seeing a movie in Plex’s free catalog does not mean Plex is offering that title as a downloadable file. Plex’s free section is intended for online playback.
5. Kanopy
Kanopy is available through participating public libraries and universities. Registration normally involves an email address and either a library-card number or institutional credentials.

Hoopla works with participating public libraries and includes movies, television, ebooks, audiobooks, comics, magazines, and music. Select GET STARTED to create access or Log In if you already have an account.

Hoopla says that most titles can be downloaded to a phone or tablet for offline use. These are controlled offline loans inside the app—not permanent, unrestricted movie files. The loan period, monthly limit, and available catalog depend on your library.
7. YouTube Movies
The official YouTube Movies & Shows destination contains rentals, purchases, and free ad-supported titles. Use the movie’s official listing or an authorized distributor’s channel when looking for a free film.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A full-length upload appearing in ordinary YouTube search results is not automatically licensed. Do not treat the absence of a takedown notice as proof that the uploader owns the rights.
8. Internet Archive Feature Films
The Internet Archive Feature Films collection contains films supplied under different rights conditions, including public-domain material and uploads from rights holders.
Before downloading, open the individual item and read its rights information. A film’s presence in the collection does not prove that every copy is public domain or that commercial redistribution is allowed. Some archive functions may also require JavaScript in a modern browser.
9. Internet Archive Prelinger Archives
The separate Prelinger Archives collection focuses on historical industrial, educational, advertising, and other ephemeral films.
Many items are available to view, and some provide downloads, but permission to reuse them depends on the individual item. “Available to view” is not the same as “free for commercial reuse.” Check the rights information before editing, publishing, or selling a derivative work.
10. Fandango at Home Free
The service formerly known as Vudu is now Fandango at Home. The old vudu.com address redirects to a free-content page at Fandango at Home.
Its free titles are ad-supported. Rentals and purchases remain separate options, so check that a movie is labeled free before starting playback. Search results or older instructions that tell you to look for a current “Vudu” service use outdated branding.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Xumo Play is a streaming service. Do not assume that its on-demand movies can be saved as permanent files unless a specific supported app exposes an offline feature.
12. FilmRise
FilmRise operates a free catalog through its own website and third-party streaming platforms. On its website, the relevant paths include Film → Our Catalog and Television → Our Catalog; the search control is labeled Search.
Availability varies by country, platform, and licensing agreement. The website does not establish that every title is available in every region or that direct downloads are offered.
13. Fawesome
Fawesome is an ad-supported service with free movies and television. Its catalog and supported features vary by region and platform.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep the website, a mobile app, and a third-party embed separate when checking availability. Only describe a movie as downloadable if the specific app or title provides an offline-download control.
14. Crackle
Crackle remains a free, ad-supported streaming brand. Its website, catalog, and device availability can vary by region.
Be careful with old guides that describe Crackle as Sony-owned. Sony sold Crackle in 2020, so ownership descriptions copied from older articles are outdated.
15. Peacock’s free tier
Peacock has offered a no-cost, ad-supported tier in the United States. Its free catalog and account requirements have changed, so verify that a title is specifically marked free.

Finding a movie on Peacock does not by itself mean that it is included in the no-cost tier. A title may instead require a paid plan or be unavailable in your location.
16. Sling Freestream
Sling Freestream provides free ad-supported channels and on-demand programming without a paid Sling subscription. It is separate from the paid Sling Orange and Sling Blue packages.
Content and device support vary. If the web player does not start, check browser compatibility and whether the current interface requires an account for the selected feature.
17. DistroTV
DistroTV offers free ad-supported live channels and on-demand programming. Availability depends on your country and device.

18. Local Now
Local Now combines local news with free shows, movies, and channels. The selection changes according to location and device.
It is designed primarily for streaming. Confirm that a title-specific offline option exists before describing a Local Now movie as downloadable.
19. Library of Congress National Screening Room
The National Screening Room from the Library of Congress provides free online access to selected historical films.
This is not a general source for current Hollywood releases. Rights and reuse permissions must be checked on the individual item page, particularly if you plan to download, republish, or use footage in a project.

20. National Film Board of Canada
NFB.ca provides legally authorized Canadian documentaries, animation, and feature films. Some titles are free, while others have geographic or access restrictions.
Do not assume that the entire NFB catalog is free or downloadable. Look for the availability information attached to the specific film.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to tell whether a free movie source is legitimate
- Start with the service’s official website or app. Avoid “free movie” pages that redirect through several advertising domains or ask you to install an unknown player.
- Check the title’s access label. Look for wording such as free, included, ad-supported, library loan, or watch now. A search result alone is not enough.
- Inspect the rights information for archives. On Internet Archive and Library of Congress pages, read the individual item’s rights statement rather than relying on the collection name.
- Distinguish offline viewing from file ownership. A Hoopla download is an app-controlled loan. It is not a normal MP4 that you can copy to another device or redistribute.
- Expect regional and catalog changes. Licensing can change the available title, number of ads, ticket cost, or supported device without making the service illegal.
What to avoid
A website offering every new cinema release as a free MP4, especially before an official home release, is a major warning sign. Other red flags include fake browser-update prompts, password requests unrelated to the service, executable “codec” downloads, and multiple download buttons that do not match the service’s normal interface.
Also avoid relying on old names and old lists. IMDb TV is not a current standalone destination; use Amazon’s current free-content labels in Prime Video instead. Likewise, search for Fandango at Home rather than following instructions that still call the service Vudu.
FAQ
Which services let me download movies for offline viewing?
Hoopla says most titles can be downloaded to a phone or tablet for offline use, but those downloads remain controlled loans inside the app. Internet Archive items may offer downloadable files, but the permitted use depends on each item’s rights statement. Most other services in this list are streaming-oriented.
Are movies on YouTube always legal to watch?
No. Use the official Movies & Shows destination or an authorized distributor’s channel. An unauthorized full-length upload can appear in search results even though it does not have the necessary rights.
Is everything on Internet Archive public domain?
No. Internet Archive hosts material under different rights conditions. Read the rights information on the specific Feature Films or Prelinger item before downloading, editing, or redistributing it.
Can I use Kanopy without a library card?
Usually, you need access through a participating public library or university. You typically sign in with a library-card number or institutional credentials, and the catalog and monthly ticket allowance depend on that institution.
Do free streaming services require an account?
Not always. Tubi makes an account optional for basic access, and Xumo Play says no login is needed. Library services such as Kanopy and Hoopla require library or university eligibility, while other platforms can require an account for particular devices or features.
The Bottom Line
For straightforward free streaming, start with Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Plex, Xumo Play, or Sling Freestream. If you have library access, Kanopy and Hoopla can provide better-curated catalogs, with Hoopla offering controlled offline viewing for many loans. For actual downloadable files, use Internet Archive or another archive only after checking the individual item’s rights information.
Free does not mean unrestricted: ads, library limits, regional licensing, account requirements, and changing catalogs are normal. If a site promises current commercial releases as unrestricted downloads, it is not one of the safe options above.
