“No serious undertone” is subjective, so this list uses a practical filter: comedies whose main appeal is playful situations and amusing characters, rather than a sustained story about grief, trauma, or other heavy stakes. The picks are grouped by humor style—not ranked as an objective set of the “best” films. A comedy label alone does not guarantee a light watch.
Start with pure silliness and farce
Choose these when you want comic confusion, exaggerated behavior, or physical gags to drive the evening. Their appeal is less about emotional growth and more about watching absurd situations unfold.

1. Airplane! (1980)
A disaster-movie setup becomes a rapid-fire parade of deadpan jokes, visual gags, and deliberately ridiculous misunderstandings. It is an especially strong fit if you enjoy comedy that keeps escalating rather than pausing for a heartfelt subplot.
2. The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)
Leslie Nielsen plays a relentlessly serious detective in a world where almost every scene turns into a gag. Expect broad slapstick and wordplay, not a grounded police drama.
#1 Best Overall
3. Clue (1985)
This ensemble mystery sends a group of suspicious guests through an increasingly chaotic evening. The murder-mystery framing brings comic peril, but the film’s central pleasure is farce, quick dialogue, and competing versions of events.
4. What’s Up, Doc? (1972)
A mistaken-identity farce spirals through a hotel, a courtroom, and the streets of San Francisco. Its brisk physical comedy and accumulating mix-ups make it a good choice for viewers who like old-fashioned screwball energy.
5. The Pink Panther (1963)
Peter Sellers’s Inspector Clouseau blunders through an art-heist mystery with an unshakable confidence that the jokes continually undermine. The light comic focus makes this a gentler alternative to a modern action comedy.

These films have more affection for their characters than a pure gag reel, but their central conflicts are comic and comparatively low-stakes. If you want absolutely no sentiment, start with the farces above instead.
6. Best in Show (2000)
This mockumentary follows eccentric dog owners preparing for a competitive dog show. Its humor comes from awkward interviews, peculiar personalities, and small rivalries rather than a dramatic storyline.
Rank #2
7. A Mighty Wind (2003)
A reunion concert brings together fictional folk musicians whose earnestness and old grudges are played for affectionate laughs. There is some nostalgia in the premise, but the focus stays on comic characters and performance.
8. The Birdcage (1996)
A nightclub owner and his partner try to accommodate their son’s conservative future in-laws, setting up a farce built on disguises and social performance. The family and identity themes give it warmth, while the escalating dinner-party comedy remains central.

9. School of Rock (2003)
A broke musician poses as a substitute teacher and turns a class into a rock band. The school setting brings a feel-good streak and a story about confidence, so this is warmer than a no-lesson slapstick movie, but its main draw is still music and comedy.
10. Legally Blonde (2001)
Elle Woods follows an ex-boyfriend to law school and proves more capable than her peers expect. The story includes ambition and self-discovery, making it a more motivational pick than a purely silly one, but it keeps a bright comic tone.
Choose romantic comedy without a heavy dramatic thread
Romantic comedies necessarily involve relationship uncertainty. These options keep that tension within a playful, broadly upbeat frame; skip this group if even a breakup or romantic setback feels too serious for the night.

11. When Harry Met Sally… (1989)
Two friends debate whether men and women can remain platonic while their relationship changes over the years. The film has reflective conversations and romantic uncertainty, but its humor and chemistry are the main attractions.
12. Clueless (1995)
A wealthy high-school student plays matchmaker and tries to improve the lives of people around her, often misreading what they need. Its social satire and romance stay buoyant rather than becoming a sustained drama.
13. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
This high-school romantic comedy builds its plot around a dating scheme and the collision of strong personalities. It offers teenage romance and some emotional friction, but its pace and comic set pieces keep the tone light.
14. My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
A Greek-American woman’s romance prompts comic clashes between family expectations and her own plans. Family pressure and cultural differences are part of the story, so it is warmer and more emotionally grounded than a pure farce.
Try animation and family-friendly silliness
Animation can be a reliable route to playful visuals and exaggerated comic characters, but it does not automatically mean a film is emotionally weightless. These picks are best for viewers who want colorful comedy and broad accessibility.

15. The Emperor’s New Groove (2000)
A vain ruler is transformed into a llama and must rely on the peasant he mistreated. The story has a small redemption arc, but its rapid jokes, odd-couple bickering, and cartoon absurdity dominate.
16. Monsters, Inc. (2001)
Two monster coworkers discover that a human child has entered their workplace, disrupting a system built around scaring children. It has a friendship-and-kindness thread, so expect more warmth than in a gag-only comedy.
17. The Lego Movie (2014)
An ordinary construction worker gets swept into an over-the-top adventure full of visual jokes and pop-culture references. Its action and message-driven moments mean it is not devoid of stakes, but the comic invention stays front and center.

Action comedies can be funny and still include danger or conflict. These are choices for readers who accept cartoonish peril and fast-moving plots, not for anyone seeking a film with no tension at all.

An American tourist mistakes a real espionage plot for an interactive theater game. The gap between the danger around him and his cheerful misunderstanding creates the comedy; the spy-plot peril is the reason this is a borderline fit.

19. Johnny English (2003)
A well-meaning but inept agent is tasked with saving the day after Britain’s top spies are eliminated. Its spy-film stakes are played broadly for laughs, though the premise includes danger that a purely gentle comedy would avoid.
20. The Spy Who Dumped Me (2018)
Two friends become entangled in an international conspiracy after one learns her ex-boyfriend was a spy. The friendship and comic action give it an energetic tone, but violence and spy-thriller danger make it the least suitable choice here for a genuinely low-stakes evening.
How to choose the right kind of light comedy
- For the least emotional weight: start with Airplane!, The Naked Gun, or What’s Up, Doc?
- For affectionate character comedy: try Best in Show or The Birdcage.
- For romance and warmth: choose Clueless or When Harry Met Sally…, knowing that relationship uncertainty is part of the story.
- For colorful, broadly accessible comedy: consider The Emperor’s New Groove or Monsters, Inc.
- For action-comedy: choose one of the spy films only if comic peril is acceptable.
Content suitability is separate from emotional weight. Language, sexual humor, violence, and other material vary by title, and a light tone does not necessarily mean a film is appropriate for every audience. Check a film’s rating and a detailed content guide if those details matter to your group.
Check availability before movie night
Streaming catalogs change and differ by territory. A platform’s general comedy or feel-good list is not proof that a particular title is currently available where you live; search the exact film in your local service catalog before planning to watch it.
