Freescale confirmed that 20 of its employees were passengers on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370: 12 from Malaysia and eight from China. A separate 2014 report said unspecified media reports suggested an IBM employee was also aboard, but it named no one and did not establish that person’s identity or employment.

How many Freescale employees were aboard MH370?

Freescale Semiconductor said that 20 of its employees were passengers on the flight. The company identified 12 as Malaysian and eight as Chinese in its March 8, 2014 statement, reproduced in an archive. Contemporaneous Associated Press reporting carried by CBS also reported the employee count and nationalities.

Freescale president and CEO Gregg Lowe said at the time, “At present, we are solely focused on our employees and their families,” reflecting the company’s immediate response to the disappearance.

Why were the Freescale employees traveling to Beijing?

Freescale spokeswoman Jacey Zuniga told the Associated Press that the employees were traveling to China for a business meeting. She said they belonged to teams at the company’s manufacturing sites in Kuala Lumpur and Tianjin: “We have several manufacturing sites in Kuala Lumpur and Tianjin, China. Those 20 employees were with those teams,” CBS reported on March 9, 2014.

The report describes a business trip and the employees’ work locations; it does not establish any connection between their employer or work and the aircraft’s disappearance.

Was an IBM employee also on the flight?

The evidence in the available 2014 report is weaker than Freescale’s company confirmation. The Register wrote that “Media reports suggest” an IBM employee was aboard, but did not name the person or identify the reports behind the claim. That wording is a second-hand suggestion, not independent confirmation of the passenger’s identity or IBM employment. The Register’s March 9, 2014 article is the source for that distinction.

What happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370?

MH370 left Kuala Lumpur for Beijing on March 8, 2014, carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew. The Associated Press says the plane disappeared from air-traffic radar 39 minutes after departure. Its last radio call to Kuala Lumpur was quoted as: “Good night, Malaysian Three Seven Zero.” AP’s 2025 account recounts the flight and its disappearance.

What is known about the search—and what remains unknown?

Debris and search efforts

A flaperon found on Réunion in July 2015 was among the debris recovered and linked to the aircraft. AP reports that a multinational search covered roughly 120,000 square kilometers (46,000 square miles) of seabed without finding the aircraft. A 2018 Ocean Infinity search also ended without success. The searches described by AP had not recovered the main wreckage or any bodies.

AP’s 2025 retrospective also describes a later renewed search that was suspended in April because of bad weather. Search status can change, so its account should be understood as a snapshot rather than a current operational update.

Cause and sequence

The cause and exact sequence of events remain unresolved in the available account. Malaysia’s 2018 investigation cleared passengers and crew but did not rule out “unlawful interference,” according to AP. That finding does not establish who or what caused the disappearance.

The confirmed Freescale passenger count and the weaker IBM suggestion answer who was reported aboard; neither explains what happened to MH370.
