To move your WhatsApp chat history from Android to an iPhone, use Apple’s Move to iOS during initial iPhone setup. The iPhone must be new or factory-reset, and you must activate WhatsApp on it with the same phone number. If you cannot erase an iPhone that is already set up, linking may provide account access on another device—but it does not import your Android chat archive.
Which option should you choose?

WhatsApp’s current instructions document Move to iOS as the supported Android-to-iPhone route for transferring chat history. A linked device is a different use case, not a second way to import or merge the Android archive.
Method 1: Transfer WhatsApp chats with Move to iOS
Check the requirements first
- The Android phone must run Android 5 or later, and the iPhone must run iOS 15.5 or later.
- Install the latest WhatsApp version available on both phones and the Move to iOS app on Android.
- Use the same phone number for WhatsApp on both phones.
- The iPhone must be new or factory-reset, and WhatsApp must not already be activated on it.
- Connect both phones to power and the same Wi-Fi network. If needed, Android can connect to the iPhone’s hotspot.
WhatsApp says the transfer can include account information, profile photo, individual and group chats, communities, channel updates, chat history, media, and settings. It does not include WhatsApp call history, your display name, or media received through WhatsApp Channels. Messages tied to peer-to-peer payments cannot be transferred. The migrated data is not in iCloud unless you create an iCloud backup afterward. See WhatsApp’s Android-to-iPhone transfer instructions.
Transfer steps
- Protect any iPhone data you need. If the iPhone has already been set up, back it up before erasing it; a factory reset deletes its contents. Apple says you must erase an iOS device and start setup again if you have already completed setup and want to use Move to iOS. See Apple’s Move to iOS setup instructions.
- Start iPhone setup and choose the Android transfer option. Continue through setup until the transfer screen appears.
- Open Move to iOS on Android. Follow its prompts and enter the code displayed on the iPhone.
- Select WhatsApp on the Android transfer screen. Start WhatsApp’s preparation step and wait for the export to finish.
- Keep the transfer running. Keep both phones nearby and powered, and leave Move to iOS open on Android. Switching apps or taking a call before completion can interrupt the transfer.
- Finish setting up the iPhone. Install the latest WhatsApp from the App Store, sign in with the same number, and follow the import prompt.
- Check the result before removing anything from Android. Confirm the chats and media you need are on the iPhone. If you want cloud recovery, create an iCloud backup after migration.
Apple supports wireless transfer. It also says a direct USB-C connection between compatible devices can make the broader Move to iOS transfer faster; a cable is optional, not required. Check the connector ports on both phones before buying or using a cable. Apple’s current setup page also describes a no-app transfer flow for certain supported Android devices running a compatible version of Android 17, but it does not say that WhatsApp history is included, so do not assume that route migrates WhatsApp chats.

If the transfer fails
- Confirm the iPhone is new or reset, WhatsApp is not already activated on it, and both phones use the same number.
- Check the minimum operating-system versions, WhatsApp updates, and that Move to iOS is installed on Android.
- Keep both phones powered and on the same Wi-Fi network, or connect Android to the iPhone hotspot. Leave Move to iOS open on Android; disable Android settings that interfere with Wi-Fi, and turn off cellular data if needed.
- Restart both phones and make sure the iPhone has enough free storage for the transfer.
- Keep the Android phone and its WhatsApp data intact until you have confirmed the import.
If WhatsApp has already been activated on the iPhone, the old history cannot simply be restored over the new iPhone history. WhatsApp says the histories cannot be merged; using the documented migration route requires erasing the iPhone and starting setup again. WhatsApp also warns that third-party migration apps are unsupported for this transfer and may cause migration problems. See WhatsApp’s guidance for transferring your account information.

If resetting the iPhone is not an option, WhatsApp’s linked-device feature may let you access the account on another device by scanning a QR code from the primary phone. Availability and behavior can depend on the account and device combination. The companion-phone-specific instructions available from WhatsApp are for WhatsApp Business, so do not assume that they guarantee the same experience for every personal WhatsApp account. If having the complete old history on the iPhone is essential, linking does not replace Move to iOS: back up anything important on the iPhone, erase it, and run the migration during setup.
