A partial jaw found in Ethiopia’s Afar region shows that Paranthropus lived farther north than its known fossil record had indicated. The specimen, MLP-3000, is about 2.6 million years old and challenges the assumption that the genus’s large chewing anatomy confined it to a narrow range of habitats. It does not, by itself, reveal an exact diet or prove competition with other hominins.
What is the fossil, and where was it found?
MLP-3000 is a partial lower jaw attributed to Paranthropus, an extinct hominin genus known for large jaws and molars. It was discovered at the Mille-Logya research area in Ethiopia’s Afar region. The University of Chicago describes it as the first identified Paranthropus specimen from Afar. University of Chicago’s account of the discovery and the Natural History Museum’s report describe the find and its significance.
The fossil is described generally as about 2.6 million years old. More precisely, the authors of the 2026 Nature study estimate its age at 2.5–2.9 million years. That interval is an estimate, not a single exact date.

How does it change the known range of Paranthropus?
The Afar jaw extends the genus’s documented fossil occurrence northward. The Natural History Museum puts the new find about 1,000 km farther north than the previously known occurrence. This is a comparison of fossil locations; it does not establish a migration route, when the genus moved, or whether a particular species made the journey.

- Display-ready fossil replica (stand not included)
The distinction matters because a gap in fossil finds is not proof that a species was absent from a region. The museum’s palaeontologist Fred Spoor said: “Despite many decades of fieldwork in the Afar region, Paranthropus remained unknown here. As such, it was thought that it never dispersed this far north, either due to ecological factors or because of competition with other species present in the area. The new discovery now suggests otherwise and the assumed absence was the result of an incomplete fossil record.”
Why does the jaw challenge ideas about early hominins?
Paranthropus is often associated with a powerful chewing apparatus, leading to the nickname “Nutcracker Man.” That anatomy has been used to imagine a highly specialized animal whose diet or habitat restricted its geographic spread. MLP-3000 complicates that picture: the genus was present in Afar, farther north than the previous fossil record showed, suggesting it could occupy a broader range of eastern African environments than a narrow-specialist model implied.

The specimen’s importance is therefore about distribution and the limits of what anatomy alone can tell us. As University of Chicago professor Zeresenay Alemseged put it, “This discovery is so much more than a simple snapshot of Paranthropus’ occurrence: It sheds fresh light on the driving forces behind the evolution of the genus.”

What can the fossil tell us about diet and competition?
The jaw and teeth provide anatomical evidence, but they do not establish a precise menu. Large molars alone cannot show exactly what an individual ate or how its diet changed across habitats. The discovery supports reconsidering whether specialized chewing necessarily limited Paranthropus’s range; it does not settle the genus’s diet.

- Fossil replica of a Mesozoic echinoderm measuring approximately 4cm (1.25")
- Sturdy fossil replica made from resin is designed to last through heavy classroom and laboratory use
- This echinoderm is related to the sea urchins and starfish of today
- Perfect for use in the classroom during lessons on fossils and paleontology
- hough the echinoderm's durable test, or shell, is often preserved, the more fragile spines are rarely preserved
Nor does the find prove that Paranthropus competed directly with other hominins. Australopithecus garhi, from the same broad period, also had large molars, but tooth size by itself is too crude to infer that the groups were competing for the same resources. The fossil record establishes an occurrence and anatomical traits, not the details of ecological interactions.

The University of Chicago reports that the research team used micro-CT scanning to examine internal anatomy and morphology, and compared the specimen with fossils from elsewhere in Africa. Digital imaging made it possible to inspect features such as tooth roots without relying only on the jaw’s visible exterior. The study, “Afar fossil shows broad distribution and versatility of Paranthropus,” by Zeresenay Alemseged, Fred Spoor, Denné Reed, W. Andrew Barr, Denis Geraads, René Bobe, and Jonathan G. Wynn, was published in Nature on January 21, 2026. The Nature study abstract gives the age estimate and scientific framing.
