In a February 2025 CRN interview, David Faugno—then 1Password’s co-CEO—described managed service providers (MSPs) as central to the company’s channel strategy and outlined a new Enterprise Password Manager – MSP Edition. He also framed an IPO as a possible future step, not a scheduled event: 1Password had made no decision, set no date and had no explicit plan to go public.
What 1Password launched for MSPs
The MSP Edition was a specific channel product launch, not a claim that every 1Password capability was immediately available in an MSP operating model. Faugno said the first offer would focus on the password-manager part of the platform and be built around multitenancy. That architecture is intended to let a provider manage multiple customer organizations while keeping their environments separated.
He said broader platform capabilities would be adapted for MSPs as those capabilities became sufficiently hardened and ready. For an MSP evaluating the product, that distinction matters: the launch established a password-management foundation, while the wider platform roadmap remained progressive rather than fully present at launch.
Questions MSPs should ask
- How are customer tenants isolated and administered?
- Which policies can be applied across clients, and which must be configured one tenant at a time?
- What technician roles and permissions are available without granting unnecessary access to client vaults?
- How are seats, billing and procurement handled for managed companies?
- Which extended access-management functions are included in the MSP Edition today, rather than merely part of the broader 1Password platform?
Why MSPs mattered to the channel strategy
Faugno called MSPs “a very, very important part of our future.” In the same interview, he said channel would be front and center in how 1Password went to market. His channel description also included hyperscalers—especially AWS Marketplace—and traditional resellers.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Those comments describe the strategy he presented in February 2025; they should not be read as a current ranking of 1Password’s channels or as proof of a particular reseller or referral program. AWS Marketplace and reseller procurement are channel contexts, not evidence of affiliate compensation or commission terms.
What the multitenant approach changes for providers
For an MSP, multitenancy can reduce the operational friction of serving many companies, but it does not remove the need for tenant-level governance. The practical test is whether a provider can onboard a client, enforce that client’s policies, delegate technician work and revoke access without weakening separation between customers.
1Password’s move beyond password storage
Faugno positioned 1Password as moving toward extended access management. In his description, that category connects identities, devices and application visibility, including visibility into unsanctioned SaaS use. The goal, as he presented it, is to understand and control access across more than a password vault.

He pointed to Trelica’s application-discovery capabilities as helping accelerate that direction. These are 1Password’s and Faugno’s product-positioning claims, not an independent assessment that every MSP Edition deployment includes the entire extended platform.
MSP features added after the original launch
On May 7, 2026, 1Password’s Community update described additional MSP controls. The update listed policy templates for managed companies, license-seat limits and granular vault permissions.
| Capability | What the 2026 update established | Operational relevance |
|---|---|---|
| Policy templates | Templates could be used for managed companies. | Helps providers apply repeatable baseline settings when onboarding or standardizing clients. |
| License-seat limits | MSPs could set limits on licensed seats. | Provides a control for keeping client allocations within an agreed boundary. |
| Granular vault permissions | More fine-grained vault permissions were available. | Supports least-privilege administration for client users and technicians. |
These are later product developments and should not be backdated to the February 2025 launch. They also do not establish that every feature in the broader 1Password platform is part of the MSP Edition.

What Faugno actually said about an IPO
Faugno’s IPO comments were explicitly conditional. Asked about 1Password’s prospects, he said: “We have no explicit plans to be public. We’ve not made any decisions. We don’t have any date that we’re working back from.”
He added that the company was preparing its systems and operating practices so it could be ready if and when the timing was right. His broader formulation was: “we do believe that this platform and this company can be a very large, standalone business. And we do believe that public markets are a likely stop on that journey, and an accelerator of that journey.”
That language indicates aspiration and preparation, not a filed registration, board-approved timetable or announced listing. Readers should distinguish three different signals:

- FIDO-ONLY FUNCTIONALITY: Supports FIDO2 (passkeys) and FIDO U2F protocols for passwordless and second-factor authentication. Does not support OTP, TOTP, Smart Card (PIV), or other advanced features - upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series for extended functionality
- SECURE AND CONVENIENT: Passwordless MFA login with the YubiKey Bio authenticator and biometric information using a fingerprint, with a PIN as a fallback. Simply plug in via USB and use your fingerprint to authenticate
- DEVICE & OS COMPATIBILITY: Compatible with Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux. Works seamlessly with supported services like Google and Microsoft accounts, and major password managers. See the full compatibility list at "Works With YubiKey"
- DURABLE & RELIABLE: Resistant to tampering, water, and crushing. No batteries or network connectivity required, offering dependable authentication without any downtime. Securely manufactured in USA & Sweden
- Yubico Authenticator App - Fingerprint enrollment, passkey management and PIN configuration available via the app app - Upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series to generate one-time-passwords (OTP) via Yubico Authenticator and for advanced compatibility (OATH, PIV)
- Strategic belief: management believed the business could become a large standalone company.
- Readiness work: the company was building systems and operating practices suitable for a future public-company path.
- Concrete IPO action: none was announced in the February 2025 interview; no date or decision was provided.
How large was 1Password?
Faugno said in the February 2025 CRN interview that 1Password had more than 150,000 customers and that 75 percent of its business came from companies. Those are interview-time figures and his claims.
In a July 28, 2026 announcement, 1Password reported more than 200,000 business customers and identified Faugno as CEO. That is a different measure and a later date, so it should not be presented as a directly comparable update to the 2025 total-customer figure.

What the announcement means for MSP decision-makers
The 2025 message was that 1Password wanted MSPs to be a core route to market, beginning with multitenant password management and expanding as additional capabilities matured. The useful evaluation is therefore operational, not purely categorical: test tenant separation, policy administration, technician permissions, seat controls, billing workflows and the exact scope of features available to your clients.
For investors and business readers, the IPO story is similarly specific. Faugno described public markets as a likely future stop and an accelerator, while explicitly saying there was no plan, decision or date. Any conclusion stronger than that would go beyond his remarks.
