All 17 people aboard the fishing vessel Genesis were airlifted to safety after it ran aground near the Old Man of Hoy in Orkney on the morning of October 1, 2026. Reports say a westerly swell breaking over the vessel made evacuation by boat unsafe.
What happened to the fishing boat off Hoy?
Genesis ran aground close to the Old Man of Hoy, off Hoy in Orkney, at about 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, after issuing a Mayday call requesting assistance, STV reported. The Orcadian described the vessel as Spanish-owned and UK-flagged.
The Orcadian attributed the initial account to a Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesperson, who said HM Coastguard received a report that a fishing vessel with 17 people aboard had gone aground and needed immediate assistance.

Were all 17 crew rescued?
Yes. All 17 people aboard were evacuated by helicopter. A Coastguard helicopter from Stornoway took them to Kirkwall Airport, according to STV. The Scottish Ambulance Service told STV that 17 patients were assessed and discharged there.

Why were the crew airlifted instead of taken off by boat?
STV reported that a westerly swell was breaking over the grounded vessel, making an evacuation by boat unsafe. The reported response included the Stromness RNLI lifeboat, Coastguard helicopters from Sumburgh and Stornoway, Coastguard Rescue Teams from Kirkwall and St Margaret’s Hope, local vessels and an RAF maritime patrol aircraft.
What is known about the vessel and what happened next?
The Orcadian reported that captain Alejandro Abuin Prado later thanked the rescuers, saying he was “very grateful.” The reports cited here do not establish why Genesis ran aground or what happened to the vessel after the evacuation. They also do not establish whether pollution occurred or whether an investigation began.
