If Realtek Audio Console or Realtek Audio Control says “Cannot connect to RPC service,” first check whether the Realtek HD Audio Universal Service startup entry is enabled. A Microsoft Q&A reply identifies it as a targeted check for this error, but it is community guidance—not a guaranteed fix. The message alone does not prove that Windows’ core Remote Procedure Call service is stopped. Work through the checks below one at a time, restarting when prompted, then reopen the app and see whether the error remains.
Before you start: separate the console error from sound problems
Note whether audio still plays and whether the error appears in Realtek Audio Console or Realtek Audio Control. The app can fail to connect even when Windows audio works; conversely, missing or silent speakers may point to a wider output, device, or driver issue. The available sources do not establish one root cause or a success rate for any fix.
The steps below are a troubleshooting ladder, not 16 fixes that apply to every PC. Start with the checks that match your symptoms, and avoid changing unrelated Windows services or installing a driver meant for a different computer.

Check the Windows audio path
1. Confirm the app and exact symptom
Record the app name shown in Start or Settings and the exact error text. Check whether sound works in another app. This helps distinguish a console connection problem from a general playback failure.

2. Select the intended output device
Open Settings > System > Sound and choose the speakers or headphones you actually use. Windows may be sending sound to a monitor, dock, Bluetooth device, or another output instead.
3. Check mute and volume
Confirm that Windows volume is turned up and not muted. Also check the speaker, headset, and app volume controls; a hardware mute button or separate control can silence audio even when Windows appears normal.
4. Reseat cables and check the jack
If you use wired speakers or headphones, unplug and reconnect them, and confirm that they are connected to the intended audio jack. For Bluetooth devices, confirm that the device is connected and selected as the output.

6. Run the Settings audio troubleshooter
If more diagnosis is needed, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then run Audio. Follow any recommended action and check whether the symptom changes.
7. Make sure the intended audio device is enabled
In Windows sound settings, check the available playback and recording devices and make sure the device you need has not been disabled. Labels can vary by PC and driver; do not enable or select a device simply because its name contains “Realtek.”
8. Temporarily turn off audio enhancements
Microsoft notes that audio enhancements can sometimes cause sound problems. If the option is available for your output device, turn enhancements off temporarily, test playback, and restore them if they make no difference.
9. Install available Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, check for updates, and install available updates. Restart if Windows requests it, then test the app and audio again.

Check the Realtek service and app
10. Check the Realtek universal service startup entry
Open Task Manager > Startup apps and look for Realtek HD Audio Universal Service, also identified in a Microsoft Q&A reply as RtkAudUService64. If it is disabled, enable it and restart Windows. This is the most directly targeted community suggestion for the console’s RPC message; the entry may not appear on every system, and enabling it is not a guaranteed fix.
The suggestion comes from replies to the Microsoft Q&A thread “Issues with Realtek HD Audio Driver”, not from a Realtek product guarantee.
11. Check audio services only if sound problems are broader
The same Q&A reply suggests checking the status of Windows Audio, Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, and Realtek Audio Universal Service, if present. Treat this as community troubleshooting guidance. If a service is stopped or reports an error, note the exact message; do not change unrelated service settings or apply blanket startup changes.

A Q&A reply suggests running wsreset, then restarting and reopening the console. To try it, open Start, type wsreset, and run the command. This resets the Store cache; it is not a direct repair of Windows’ RPC service.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.

13. Reinstall Realtek Audio Control or Console
If the app itself appears broken, uninstall the installed Realtek Audio Control or Console app, then install it again from Microsoft Store. Restart Windows and reopen it. The Store app is separate from the audio driver, so reinstalling the app does not by itself replace the driver.

14. Let Device Manager search for an available driver
In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers, select the relevant audio device, and choose Update driver followed by Search automatically for drivers. Microsoft notes that outdated or malfunctioning drivers can cause hardware problems in its “Fix sound or audio problems in Windows” guide. If Windows does not find a driver, Microsoft advises checking the computer or device manufacturer’s site.
15. Reinstall the driver if an update does not help
Microsoft’s audio guidance documents uninstalling the audio device driver in Device Manager and restarting so Windows can attempt to reinstall it. Follow the steps in Microsoft’s guide. For Realtek Console features, use the audio package supported for your exact PC or motherboard when Windows’ driver is insufficient.

Identify the full PC model—or the motherboard model for a custom-built system—before downloading anything. Compare the manufacturer’s package with the installed Realtek hardware and Console support; there is no single driver version established for all Windows 11 PCs.

Escalate if the error persists
16. Consider system-file repair or contact the manufacturer
If audio components or service registration appear damaged, the Microsoft Q&A reply suggests running System File Checker, followed by DISM, from an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt. These are escalation steps, not proven fixes for every RPC message.
- Open Start, search for Terminal or Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run
sfc /scannowand let it complete. - Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand let it complete. - Restart Windows, then test the console and audio.
If the console still cannot connect, contact the PC or motherboard manufacturer with the exact model, Windows version, error text, and troubleshooting steps already attempted. The manufacturer is the right source for a supported, hardware-matched audio driver.
What the error does—and does not—tell you
“Cannot connect to RPC service” is the app’s reported connection problem; on its own, it does not establish that Windows’ core RPC service is stopped. The error-specific Microsoft Q&A advice points first to the Realtek universal service, while Microsoft’s Support article addresses Windows audio problems more broadly. Neither source identifies one confirmed cause or universal fix, so use the symptom and your PC’s supported driver information to guide the next step.
