The 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro is the more sensible choice for most people who need a powerful, large-screen Mac: it pairs strong measured performance with a lower launch price than M5 Max. Choose M5 Max when your work can use its higher GPU ceiling, memory bandwidth, larger memory configurations, or additional media engines. The trade-offs are a high starting price and a large, relatively heavy chassis; for many M4 Pro owners, the gains may not justify upgrading.
What the 16-inch M5 Pro and M5 Max models offer
Apple announced the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro generation on March 3, 2026, with availability beginning March 11. The configurations share a 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display and a 16-core Neural Engine, but differ in graphics, memory bandwidth, memory capacity, and media engines. Apple’s complete specifications are listed on its 16-inch MacBook Pro technical specifications page.
| Configuration | CPU and GPU | Memory bandwidth | Unified memory and SSD | Media engines |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M5 Pro | 18-core CPU; 20-core GPU | 307GB/s | Starts at 24GB memory and 1TB SSD; configurable up to 64GB and 4TB | One video encode engine and one ProRes encode/decode engine |
| M5 Max, 32-core GPU | 18-core CPU; 32-core GPU | 460GB/s | M5 Max starts at 36GB memory and 2TB SSD; memory and storage configurations depend on chip/GPU selection | Two video encode engines and two ProRes encode/decode engines |
| M5 Max, 40-core GPU | 18-core CPU; 40-core GPU | 614GB/s | M5 Max configurations reach up to 128GB memory and 8TB SSD; available combinations depend on chip/GPU selection | Two video encode engines and two ProRes encode/decode engines |
Apple announced US launch starting prices of $2,699 for the 16-inch M5 Pro and $3,899 for the 16-inch M5 Max. These are launch prices, not a statement of current retail pricing; regional prices, taxes, discounts, and availability vary. See Apple’s March 3, 2026 announcement for its launch details.
What are the advantages of the 16-inch MacBook Pro?
A large, high-spec display
The 16.2-inch display has a 3456 × 2234 resolution and adaptive ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz. Apple specifies 1,000 nits sustained full-screen XDR brightness and up to 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness. The generous workspace and high refresh rate suit people who regularly work across timelines, large documents, code, or detailed creative projects. Those display specifications are Apple’s, rather than independent measurements.

Strong measured M5 Pro performance
In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 review, its M5 Pro sample scored 4,306 single-core and 28,586 multicore in Geekbench 6. The outlet’s M4 Pro comparison scored 3,910 and 22,822, respectively. In its HandBrake test converting 4K video to 1080p, the M5 Pro took 1 minute 45 seconds, compared with 2 minutes 38 seconds for the M4 Pro. These are results from that outlet’s tests and systems, not guaranteed results for every configuration or workload. Read the Tom’s Guide M5 Pro review.
Apple also claims up to 30% faster performance than a specific prior-generation 16-inch M4 Pro configuration: a model with a 14-core CPU, 20-core GPU, 48GB unified memory, and 4TB SSD. It further claims up to 4× AI performance versus the previous generation, based on Apple’s testing in January and February 2026. These are company-reported comparisons, not independent test results.

Long battery life, with results dependent on conditions
Apple rates M5 Pro for up to 24 hours of video streaming and 17 hours of wireless web use. Its M5 Max estimates are up to 22 hours of video streaming and 16 hours of wireless web use. These are Apple’s stated maximums; actual runtime depends on configuration, workload, settings, and other conditions.
Tom’s Guide measured 21 hours 10 minutes of continuous Wi-Fi web use at 150-nit brightness on its M5 Pro sample. The review had completed only one battery run at publication, so treat this as a single test result rather than a repeatable benchmark.

Useful ports and wireless connectivity
Apple lists Thunderbolt 5, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, HDMI, MagSafe 3, an SDXC card slot, and a headphone jack. Tom’s Guide reports support for several external-display setups, including up to three external displays using Thunderbolt 5 and HDMI, subject to resolution and connection limits. Check Apple’s specifications and your display requirements before choosing a setup.
What are the drawbacks?
High launch prices
The announced US starting prices were $2,699 for M5 Pro and $3,899 for M5 Max. Upgrading memory or storage changes the configured price, and current retail prices may differ from launch pricing. The Max premium is difficult to justify unless your work can use its extra GPU capacity, bandwidth, memory, or media engines.

A large, relatively heavy laptop
Tom’s Guide lists its M5 Pro review sample at 14.01 × 9.77 × 0.66 inches and 4.7 pounds. The reviewer found it transportable in a backpack but described it as a big, bulky notebook. If your priority is carrying a computer all day or using it in cramped spaces, the 16-inch chassis is a real compromise, not just a spec-sheet detail.

Some M4 Pro owners may see too little reason to upgrade
Tom’s Guide characterized the M5 Pro as generally 15–20% faster and nearly 30 minutes longer lasting than its predecessor, but judged those gains insufficient to warrant an upgrade for existing M4 Pro users. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a universal verdict: a workflow bottleneck, a specific performance need, or a change in memory or storage requirements could alter the decision.

Should you choose M5 Pro or M5 Max?
Start with the work the laptop must do, then compare the required memory and the full configured price. Apple positions M5 Pro for complex workflows and M5 Max for users pushing limits, including rigorous simulations. There is no comparable independent Pro-versus-Max test in the available figures here, so a precise percentage advantage for M5 Max cannot be stated.
- Consider M5 Pro for demanding coding, photography, and general creative work when its 20-core GPU and available memory configuration meet your needs. It provides a high-performance option without paying the M5 Max launch premium.
- Consider M5 Max when your actual workload benefits from a 32- or 40-core GPU, higher memory bandwidth, memory configurations up to 128GB, or the extra video and ProRes engines. Confirm the exact chip, memory, and storage combination before comparing prices.
- Do not buy Max on its name alone. If your applications do not use its additional GPU, memory, or media capabilities, the higher price may buy capacity you will not use.
Is the 16-inch M5 Pro worth it?
It is a plausible buy if you want a large, bright, high-refresh display, need substantial performance, and value the ports and battery capacity in a portable workstation. It is less compelling if the lower weight and smaller size of another laptop matter more than screen area, or if your work does not need this level of performance. For an M4 Pro owner, weigh a specific workflow limitation against the measured gains rather than treating a new chip generation as a reason by itself.
