Google Messages has useful tools beyond sending and receiving texts—but what you can use depends on whether a conversation uses RCS or SMS/MMS, your device and app version, and regional or carrier support. Here are 16 practical features, with the steps and limits that matter.
Schedule and manage messages
1. Schedule a message
In a conversation, write your message, then press and hold the Send button. Choose one of the suggested times or select a date and time. If your phone has no Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection at the scheduled time, Google says the message will send after the phone reconnects. Scheduling instructions are in Google Messages Help.
2. Edit, send now, or delete a scheduled message
Open the conversation and use the schedule control beside the scheduled message. From there, you can change its scheduled time, send it immediately, or delete it. These controls are documented in Google’s guide to more Messages features.

3. Enlarge one message
Open a conversation, select a message, and pinch outward to enlarge its text. Pinch inward to return to the default size. This changes the selected message’s display, rather than the text size across the whole app. See Google Messages Help.

4. Reply to a specific message
Swipe from left to right on the message you want to answer, then write your reply. This requires chat features (RCS). On desktop, Google’s documented instructions allow you to view replies but not send them. Details are in Google’s feature guide.
5. Copy a verification code
When a message contains a one-time verification code, open it and tap Copy Code, then paste the code into the app or site requesting it. Google says this feature does not send the code to its servers. That statement applies to copying verification codes; it is not a general privacy claim about all Messages content. 6. React with an emoji
Press and hold a message and choose an emoji reaction. What the recipient sees can depend on the conversation type. Google documents regional limits for reactions to SMS/MMS, and reactions apply to text—not media received through MMS. See Google’s guide to expressive features.

Find conversations and older content
7. Search messages and shared content
Tap the search control in Messages to look through conversations and content. Google describes search for messages, photos, places, and more; filters can help narrow what you find. See Google’s feature guide.
8. Show unread conversations
Use the Unread filter in the inbox filter options to focus on conversations with unread messages. Filter names and availability may vary with the app version. See Google’s filter instructions.
9. Separate known and unknown senders
Use the sender filters to distinguish people saved in your Contacts from those who are not. Google defines known senders by whether they are saved in Contacts. See Google Messages Help.

10. View starred conversations
Choose the Starred filter to find conversations you have starred instead of scrolling through the full inbox. See Google’s filter instructions.
11. Filter by SIM on a dual-SIM phone
If your phone has two SIMs, the SIM 1 and SIM 2 filters show messages sent to the selected SIM. These filters are intended for dual-SIM setups. See Google Messages Help.
12. Find messages with images or videos
Use the Images or Videos inbox filter to locate conversations containing that type of media. See Google’s filter instructions.

Use RCS features when the conversation supports them
RCS can add richer features than SMS/MMS, but it must be available for the relevant users and provider. Support varies by region and carrier, and some features also depend on the other person’s app and device. If RCS is unavailable, messages may fall back to SMS/MMS depending on your settings; mobile-data charges follow your plan. Google explains availability and setup in its RCS overview and RCS FAQ.
13. See when someone is typing or has read your message
RCS supports typing indicators and read receipts. Read receipts can tell the other person when you have read a message, subject to your settings and whether RCS is active for that conversation. They are not general SMS/MMS indicators. See Google’s RCS overview.

14. Send higher-quality photos and videos
Google lists high-resolution photos and videos among RCS capabilities. Do not assume the same quality over SMS/MMS: the richer media experience depends on RCS support in the conversation. See Google Messages Help.

15. Manage an RCS group
RCS group features include renaming a group and removing yourself from it. Group-management options can depend on compatibility, including in RCS conversations between Android and iPhone users. Check Google’s RCS overview and RCS FAQ for the current conditions.
Google documents end-to-end encryption for RCS conversations with other Google Messages users. Its FAQ says RCS chats with iPhone users are not end-to-end encrypted. Turning RCS off can remove you from group chats, so do not disable it casually. See the RCS FAQ.
Use Messages on another screen
16. Pair Messages with a computer or Android tablet
Google Messages can be used on a computer through Messages for web, or on an Android tablet. For web access, pair the phone with the computer using the same Google Account and follow the on-screen pairing steps. On shared or public computers, unpair when finished. Google says recent threads, contacts, and settings are encrypted and cached in the browser; accounts unused for a few weeks are automatically unpaired. See Google’s computer and tablet instructions.
