Smart home gadgets are most useful when they simplify a routine you already have: switching off a lamp, adjusting the temperature, checking who is at the door, or spotting a leak. This 15-item guide keeps the 2024 framing of the original topic, but its product names are examples from 2024 guides and announcements—not a current ranking or confirmation of today’s availability. Before buying, check that each device works with your chosen platform, fits your home, and has the hub, wiring, and network coverage it needs.
How to choose gadgets that work together
Start with the task, then check compatibility. A device may be described as “smart” without supporting Matter or working with the app and assistant you already use. Google’s compatibility guide lists device categories supported by Google Home and says a Matter hub is needed for setup, control, and automation while away from home. Requirements vary by ecosystem and model.
- Platform: Confirm support for your chosen ecosystem and, where relevant, the specific Matter device type.
- Hub or bridge: Find out whether the product connects directly to Wi-Fi or needs a separate controller, hub, or bridge.
- Fit and installation: Check electrical ratings, door and lock type, HVAC compatibility, and existing wiring before ordering.
- Connection at the intended location: A device is only useful if its wireless connection reaches the room, entry, garage, or yard where it will be installed.
- Routine: Decide what action or notification you want, and whether the gadget can trigger it reliably.
Matter support is not universal across smart-home devices. Google’s guide includes lighting and electrical controls, climate devices, locks, garage controllers, alarms, window coverings, media devices, sensors, and controllers or bridges; check the listing for the exact model rather than assuming a whole product category is compatible.
15 smart home gadgets to consider
1. Smart plug
A smart plug can schedule or remotely switch a suitable plug-in lamp or appliance, making it a straightforward way to automate something without replacing it. Check its electrical load rating, regional plug type, and platform support. Google lists plugs among Matter device types supported by Google Home; HP’s 2024 guide also discusses smart plugs as an entry-level category (Google Home compatibility; HP’s 2024 guide).

- Group Control and Sharing:You can set a group for some wifi smart plugs and control connected appliances with one tap. Also you can share your wifi outlet plug by App with your families and enjoy the smart life together.
2. Smart bulb
Smart bulbs add app, schedule, and voice control to compatible light fittings. They are useful where you want to automate a lamp or change how a room is lit without changing the wall switch. Philips Hue is an example named in HP’s 2024 guide, not a claim about the best or newest bulb available now.
3. Smart wall switch
A connected wall switch can control a light circuit from the switch, an app, or an automation. It may suit a frequently used ceiling light better than a smart bulb, but installation and wiring needs depend on the switch and home. HP’s 2024 guide names a Kasa Wi-Fi switch as an example; verify current model compatibility and wiring requirements before purchase.
4. Smart thermostat
A thermostat can make scheduled temperature changes and remote adjustments easier. Its usefulness depends on compatibility with your heating and cooling system, existing wiring, and the features supported by its app. Google lists thermostats among Matter device types, but compatibility is model-specific; do not assume that installing one will produce a particular energy saving.

5. HVAC controller
Some heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning setups use a controller rather than a conventional thermostat. A compatible controller can bring climate equipment into a smart-home app or automation, but check the equipment type and control interface first. Google’s guide lists HVAC controllers as a Matter category, not as a guarantee that every system or controller will work together.
6. Smart door lock
A connected lock can make entry and access management more convenient, but first confirm that the lock suits the door’s preparation and lock type. Installation can require tools or a professional. Aqara’s CES 2024 announcement described its U300 lever lock as Matter- and Thread-compatible, with fingerprint, PIN, NFC, or voice-assistant access. Those are manufacturer-stated features for that model, not an independent product assessment: Aqara’s announcement.
7. Smart garage door controller
A garage controller can let a compatible system monitor or operate a garage door. Check the opener and controller requirements, how status is reported, and which platform supports the specific model. Google includes garage controllers among its Matter device categories, but that does not establish compatibility for every opener.

8. Contact sensor
Typically attached to a door or window, a contact sensor can report whether it is open or closed and may trigger an alert or automation. Think through which opening matters and whether the sensor’s connection reaches it. Google lists contact sensors among Matter device types.

9. Motion sensor
A motion sensor can be used to trigger a notification or an action such as turning on a compatible light. Placement matters: choose a location that covers the area you care about without capturing irrelevant movement. Google lists motion sensors among Matter types; exact detection and automation options depend on the device and ecosystem.
10. Temperature sensor
A separate temperature sensor can report conditions in a particular room or area, which may be useful when the thermostat is elsewhere. Before buying, check whether it can share readings with your thermostat or automations; listing the sensor and thermostat as compatible categories does not guarantee they work together. Google includes temperature sensors in its Matter guide.

11. Water-leak sensor
A leak sensor can alert you when it detects water in a place where a leak would matter, such as near plumbing or an appliance. Check whether it sends alerts through your chosen app and whether its connection reaches the installation spot. Google’s compatibility guide includes sensors, but confirm the particular device’s supported platform and features.
12. Indoor or outdoor camera
A camera can provide an entry or room view, but compare its power source, network reach, storage terms, privacy controls, and platform support before choosing. Aqara’s current catalog includes cameras; the presence of a product in the catalog does not establish comparative quality or suitability for a particular home (Aqara product catalog).

14. Smart-home hub or bridge
A hub or bridge connects compatible devices to an ecosystem and may be required for setup, automations, or remote control. For Google Home Matter devices, Google says a Matter hub is needed for setup, control, and automation while away. Other products and ecosystems can have different requirements, so check both the device and platform documentation. Aqara’s catalog lists multiple hubs, but a hub’s presence does not by itself mean it supports every device you own.
15. Smart speaker or display
A smart speaker or display can serve as a voice-control point for compatible devices; a display may also show supported camera views or controls, depending on model and platform. Forbes Vetted’s 2024 guide names Echo and Nest display examples, but those dated examples are not a current model comparison: Forbes Vetted’s 2024 guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where connected appliances and media devices fit
Smart-home convenience is not limited to the 15 gadgets above. Google’s compatibility guide includes household appliances such as vacuums, as well as smart TVs and media-streaming devices, among its Matter categories. A vacuum might automate a recurring cleaning task; a TV or streamer can join compatible controls or routines. Features and interoperability vary by model, so use the device’s exact compatibility listing rather than inferring support from its category.
Quick Recap
A practical order for building a smart home
- Pick one recurring task. Choose a clear goal, such as scheduling a lamp, getting an alert when a door opens, or adjusting a compatible climate system remotely.
- Check the device and platform. Confirm the exact model works with your chosen app or assistant, and whether it supports Matter if that matters to your setup.
- Identify extra hardware and installation needs. Check for a hub or bridge, wiring, electrical limits, and physical fit before buying.
- Check connectivity where it will be used. Verify that your network reaches the intended location and that the device can report status or deliver alerts there.
- Add devices gradually. Set up one device and verify its basic control and any intended automation before adding more. That makes it easier to spot a compatibility or coverage problem.
