The 15 best point-of-sale software options for 2026 depend on the business using them: Square is the best overall starting point for many small U.S. businesses, Shopify POS leads ecommerce retail, Lightspeed Retail suits complex inventory, Toast leads restaurants, and Helcim stands out for transparent interchange-plus processing. Prices and features vary by plan, location, hardware, and contract.
This comparison is focused on U.S. merchants evaluating cloud-based POS systems in 2026. Pricing references were checked against vendor pages on August 16, 2026; promotions, rates, hardware availability, and plan terms should be rechecked immediately before signing.
Key takeaways
- Square is the strongest general-purpose starting point for many new retailers, cafes, mobile sellers, and service businesses because it combines free entry-level software with published pricing and broad add-ons.
- Shopify POS is usually the better choice when ecommerce and in-person sales must share customers, inventory, returns, and orders; POS Pro costs $89 per month per location in addition to the underlying Shopify plan.
- Lightspeed Retail is designed for deeper retail inventory workflows, while Toast and TouchBistro are more appropriate for restaurant menus, tables, kitchen operations, and ordering.
- Helcim publishes interchange-plus pricing, but interchange-plus is not automatically cheapest because the result depends on card mix, average ticket, volume, and payment channel.
- A POS budget must include software, payment processing, hardware, add-ons, implementation, support, payroll, loyalty, ecommerce, and possible cancellation costs—not only the advertised subscription.

Which POS software is best for each type of business?
The correct POS begins with the business model, not the lowest advertised monthly fee. A retail catalog, restaurant menu, salon appointment book, and ticketing operation require different records, workflows, hardware, and reports.

What does POS software actually include?
POS software is more than a checkout screen. A modern POS may combine payment acceptance with a product or menu catalog, inventory, employees, customer records, reporting, ecommerce, hardware, and integrations.
- Checkout and payments: Card-present, online, keyed, invoice, ACH, gift-card, refund, and sometimes mobile-wallet transactions.
- Catalog or menu: Products, variants, modifiers, prices, taxes, discounts, bundles, and availability.
- Inventory and purchasing: Stock counts, low-stock alerts, purchase orders, suppliers, receiving, transfers, replenishment, and sometimes forecasting or landed costs.
- Employees: User accounts, permissions, time tracking, tips, commissions, and labor reporting.
- Customers and marketing: Customer profiles, loyalty, rewards, email or text marketing, memberships, and promotions.
- Orders and service: Returns, exchanges, refunds, appointments, deposits, online ordering, delivery, reservations, and subscriptions.
- Reporting: Sales, tax, inventory, employee, location, product, and payment reports.
- Hardware: Terminals, tablets, card readers, scanners, printers, drawers, scales, kitchen displays, kiosks, and customer-facing screens.
- Integrations: Accounting, payroll, ecommerce, delivery, reservations, scheduling, CRM, and specialized business systems.
Vendors package these capabilities differently. Square, for example, offers separate retail, restaurant, payroll, loyalty, marketing, kiosk, and kitchen-display tools; other providers include more vertical features in higher plans or sell them as separate modules.
Which POS is best overall for many small businesses?
Square is the best overall starting point for many U.S. small businesses because it offers free entry-level software, broad retail and service capabilities, mobile hardware, published payment rates, and a relatively simple path from first sale to additional tools. The recommendation is an editorial judgment for general-purpose small-business fit, not a claim that Square is cheapest for every processing profile.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Square is a practical shortlist candidate for a new retailer, cafe, mobile seller, appointment-based provider, or small service business that values fast setup. The official Square POS pricing page lists Free, Plus, and Premium location plans, separate payment rates, add-ons, and hardware starting at $59.
According to Square’s U.S. pricing page checked August 16, 2026, card-present pricing is 2.6% + 15¢ on Free, 2.5% + 15¢ on Plus, and 2.4% + 15¢ on Premium. Square also lists separate rates for online and manually entered payments. The rates and plan prices should be verified again before purchase.
The weakness is cost creep. Advanced inventory, kitchen display systems, kiosks, loyalty, payroll, marketing, and ecommerce can turn a free software plan into a much larger operating stack. Square Payments also generally limits payment-processing flexibility, so a higher-volume merchant should compare effective processing cost with Helcim or another suitable processor.
What is the best POS for ecommerce and omnichannel retail?
Shopify POS is the best fit when an online Shopify store is central to the business. Shopify can connect in-person selling with online products, customers, inventory, returns, and omnichannel operations, making it particularly suitable for apparel, beauty, specialty retail, and direct-to-consumer brands.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Shopify’s official POS pricing lists plans starting at $19 per month and POS Pro at $89 per month per location. POS Pro adds staff roles, inventory management, professional retail reports, loyalty insights, cross-location returns and exchanges, and other advanced retail features. The POS Pro fee is added to the underlying Shopify commerce subscription.
Shopify POS is less compelling for a small offline-only shop that does not need ecommerce. The buyer should also review payment-provider terms and any additional transaction fees associated with using a third-party provider, because the lowest software subscription does not necessarily produce the lowest total cost.
What is the best POS for complex retail inventory?
Lightspeed Retail is the strongest choice on this list for inventory-heavy specialty retailers, multi-location stores, and businesses that need purchasing, wholesale, reporting, and replenishment workflows beyond a basic item catalog.
According to Lightspeed’s official retail pricing, the listed plans are Basic at $89 per month, Core at $149 per month, and Plus at $289 per month. Annual billing, additional locations, registers, integrated payments, ecommerce, and add-ons can affect the final price.
Lightspeed’s retail positioning emphasizes purchase orders, supplier and inventory workflows, wholesale, landed costs, forecasting, custom reporting, and multi-channel selling. These capabilities can justify the higher fixed cost when inventory errors, stockouts, and purchasing inefficiency are expensive. A very small seller with a simple catalog may obtain better value from Square, Loyverse, or KORONA.
What is the best POS for restaurants?
Toast is the best broad restaurant-first recommendation for full-service restaurants, quick-service restaurants, bars, cafes, and restaurant groups that need front-of-house, back-of-house, ordering, and operational tools in one environment.
Toast’s official pricing page lists a Starter Kit from $0 per month and a Point of Sale plan from $69 per month. Toast also states that hardware and implementation costs vary with the configuration and installation requirements. The $0 software headline therefore does not represent the complete cost of operating a restaurant on Toast.
Toast is strongest when the business needs modifiers, menus, tables, tips, split checks, kitchen workflows, online ordering, delivery, handhelds, kiosks, or restaurant reporting. The buyer should request a written proposal showing processing, hardware, implementation, payroll, online ordering, loyalty, support, contract length, and cancellation terms. Toast may be excessive for a small counter-service business with one simple register.

Is TouchBistro a good restaurant POS alternative?
TouchBistro is a strong restaurant-focused alternative for independent restaurants and cafes that need menu management, floor plans, table management, reporting, and staff tools without choosing a broader retail platform.
TouchBistro lists POS from $69 per month and an Essentials Bundle from $119 per month. The official TouchBistro pricing page says the bundle includes integrated payments and restaurant-grade hardware and that hardware is required for the POS product.
TouchBistro buyers should price the complete configuration rather than comparing the $69 base fee with a competitor’s all-in package. Online ordering, reservations, loyalty, payroll, inventory, payments, and hardware may change the total. Toast is the broader restaurant shortlist; Square for Restaurants may be simpler for a smaller operation.
Which POS offers the most transparent payment pricing?
Helcim is the clearest comparison point for merchants who prioritize published interchange-plus processing rather than a bundled flat-rate model. Helcim can be especially relevant to B2B, professional-service, and higher-volume merchants.
Helcim’s published U.S. pricing lists in-person markups ranging from interchange + 0.40% + 8¢ at $0–$50,000 in monthly volume to interchange + 0.15% + 6¢ at $1–$5 million. Those are markup examples, not the merchant’s complete effective rate: card-network interchange, assessment charges, card mix, average ticket, debit share, rewards-card share, and payment channel all matter.
Interchange-plus is not automatically cheaper for every business. A merchant should model its real monthly volume and average transaction size against at least one flat-rate proposal. Helcim also has less specialized restaurant and complex-retail depth than Toast or Lightspeed.
Which POS is best for dedicated hardware and app flexibility?
Clover is the best hardware-and-app-ecosystem option for merchants who want dedicated terminals, handheld devices, and modular applications for retail or food service.
Clover’s retail materials show plan-dependent differences in online stores, returns, inventory, reporting, branded websites, and multi-channel sales. The Clover retail pricing page also presents device options including compact terminals, Station Duo, and Flex handheld hardware.
Clover requires careful commercial review because pricing and terms can vary by sales channel, processor, reseller, hardware financing, and selected apps. Ask who owns the merchant relationship, whether the device is purchased or financed, what happens after cancellation, and whether the merchant can change processors. Clover is less suitable for buyers demanding one universally transparent price.
Which low-cost POS systems are worth considering?
KORONA POS and Loyverse are the main low-cost alternatives in this shortlist, but they solve different problems. KORONA is more relevant when processor flexibility and specialized retail or ticketing workflows matter; Loyverse is better for a very small business that needs a free starting point.
| System | Published price signal | Best use | What may cost extra or require verification |
|---|---|---|---|
| KORONA POS | Core from $59/month | Specialty retail, ticketing, attractions, and processor-flexible operations | Hardware, payments, advanced modules, and implementation |
| Loyverse | Core POS, dashboard, KDS, and customer display listed as free | Microbusinesses, cafes, market stalls, and simple shops | Unlimited sales history, employee management, and advanced inventory |
| eHopper | Verify current U.S. plan and price | Budget-oriented retail and food businesses | Hardware, processing, support, and U.S. feature availability |
KORONA’s official pricing page lists Core from $59 per month and advertises compatibility with any processor. That flexibility may be valuable to a merchant preserving an existing payments relationship, but the merchant should confirm the exact plan, hardware, industry workflows, and support arrangement.
Loyverse lists its core POS, dashboard, kitchen display system, and customer display as free. Its pricing page lists paid add-ons including unlimited sales history at €5 per store per month, employee management at $5 per employee per month, and advanced inventory at $25 per store per month. The Loyverse pricing page displays multiple currencies and excludes taxes, so U.S. buyers should confirm the final amount.

Which POS bundles marketing, loyalty, and appointments?
SumUp POS is the strongest fit for a small business that values a bundled package of payments, customer records, loyalty, marketing, staff management, appointments, inventory, and kitchen-display features.
SumUp lists Connect Plus at $199 per month and Connect Pro at $289 per month. The official SumUp POS pricing page highlights customer databases, rewards, automated marketing, staff management, appointment booking, inventory, and KDS capabilities.

SumUp’s bundled plans are materially more expensive than free-entry POS products. The bundle may be worthwhile when a business would otherwise buy several separate tools, but a merchant needing only checkout and basic inventory should compare Square or Loyverse. Hardware, processing, availability, and cancellation terms should be confirmed for the specific U.S. package.
What about PayPal Point of Sale?
PayPal Point of Sale is most logical for a merchant already using PayPal, Venmo, or PayPal Checkout and wanting in-person acceptance within the same broader payments ecosystem.
Use the official PayPal Point of Sale page to verify current U.S. product naming, hardware, card-present rates, PayPal and Venmo acceptance, invoices, and account compatibility. PayPal familiarity does not guarantee that the system will handle complex retail inventory, restaurant menus, or multi-location operations as well as a specialist platform.
Which POS systems suit larger or specialized operations?
Revel Systems, SpotOn, Heartland POS, and eHopper cover specialized or quote-led buying situations that do not fit neatly into the entry-level category.
- Revel Systems: A candidate for larger restaurants, multi-unit operators, complex configurations, enterprise reporting, integrations, and sophisticated restaurant workflows. The Revel Systems site should be used to request a demonstration and written quote. Revel may be excessive for a single small restaurant.
- SpotOn: A restaurant option for businesses wanting ordering, reservations, loyalty, marketing, and operational tools together. Request a complete quote through the SpotOn website and compare it directly with Toast and TouchBistro.
- Heartland POS: A fit for established retail or restaurant merchants who value a Heartland payments relationship. The Heartland POS product page is a starting point, but the final package may combine POS, payments, payroll, terminals, reporting, and support.
- eHopper: A budget-oriented alternative for small retail and food businesses. Confirm current U.S. pricing, payment hardware, plan limits, support, and scaling before selecting it.
How much does POS software really cost?
The useful calculation is:
Total monthly cost = software subscriptions + payment processing + hardware financing or rental + add-ons + implementation and support + ecommerce or ordering fees + payroll, marketing, inventory, or scheduling tools + contract or cancellation costs.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Compare these line items in writing:
- Base software price and whether billing is monthly or annual.
- Per-location, per-register, per-terminal, per-device, and per-employee charges.
- Card-present, online, keyed-entry, invoice, card-on-file, ACH, and gift-card rates.
- Percentage fee and fixed per-transaction fee.
- Hardware purchase price, rental, financing, warranty, replacement, and return obligations.
- Onboarding, data migration, installation, training, premium support, and PCI or statement fees.
- Loyalty, marketing, payroll, scheduling, kitchen display, kiosk, ecommerce, reservation, delivery, and advanced inventory fees.
- Contract term, minimum volume, early termination, automatic renewal, and post-cancellation data access.
Square illustrates why subscription price is only one component. According to the Square pricing page, its listed card-present rates differ by plan and its online and manually entered rates are separate. Shopify POS Pro illustrates a different cost structure because the $89 per location charge sits on top of the Shopify commerce plan. Toast illustrates a third structure because a Starter Kit may begin at $0 per month while hardware and implementation vary.
How do flat-rate and interchange-plus processing compare?
Flat-rate processing is easier to forecast because the provider publishes a simple percentage-plus-fee schedule. Interchange-plus separates the card-network cost from the processor’s markup and can be cheaper for some higher-volume merchants, but it requires more analysis.
| Pricing model | Advantage | Risk or limitation | Best comparison method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat rate | Simple budgeting and easy-to-understand statements | May cost more for certain volume and card mixes | Calculate effective cost using actual average ticket and channels |
| Interchange-plus | More transparent separation of network cost and markup | Monthly cost varies with card type, rewards, debit, and assessments | Request sample statements and model actual card mix |
| Quote-based or bundled | May include hardware, support, and vertical features | Harder to compare; contract terms may be material | Demand a line-item proposal and termination terms |
For a fair comparison, model at least the merchant’s monthly card volume, average transaction size, card-present percentage, online percentage, keyed-entry percentage, debit share, refund rate, and invoice or ACH usage. A percentage-plus-fee rate changes materially when the average ticket is $10 instead of $500.
How deep is the inventory or menu management?
A product catalog with stock counts is basic inventory management. Serious inventory management may include purchase orders, suppliers, partial receiving, stock transfers, multi-location replenishment, bundles, assemblies, matrix products, serialized or lot-tracked products, landed costs, forecasting, inventory valuation, and warehouse or wholesale workflows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRetailers should verify barcode scanning, variants, returns, exchanges, cycle counts, supplier records, purchase orders, transfers, ecommerce synchronization, and offline inventory behavior. Restaurants should verify ingredient-level inventory, menu modifiers, availability, recipes, waste, kitchen workflows, and what happens when multiple locations or channels sell the same item.
Lightspeed Retail is the strongest shortlist candidate for advanced retail inventory. Shopify POS Pro is stronger for omnichannel retail. Square and Loyverse are more suitable when inventory requirements are simpler. Toast, TouchBistro, Revel, and SpotOn should be evaluated around restaurant workflows rather than retail inventory terminology.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the POS work offline?
“Offline capable” does not necessarily mean that every function continues normally during an internet outage. Before signing, ask whether checkout continues, how offline payments are stored, whether transaction limits apply, what happens if an offline payment is later declined, and when inventory updates after reconnection.
Restaurants and mobile sellers should also test whether kitchen displays, online ordering, delivery, multi-location synchronization, and duplicate-order prevention work during an outage. The merchant should identify which hardware and operating systems support offline mode and whether offline transactions create additional risk.
What hardware does a POS require?
Hardware requirements range from a phone and card reader to a complete installation with terminals, scanners, printers, cash drawers, kitchen displays, kiosks, scales, and customer-facing screens.
| Business need | Hardware to consider | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile selling | Phone or tablet, portable card reader, optional receipt printer | Does it work offline, and who supports the device? |
| Retail checkout | Terminal, scanner, cash drawer, receipt printer, customer display | Are scanners, printers, and drawers proprietary? |
| Restaurant service | Terminal, handhelds, printers, kitchen display, cash drawer | Does the system support tips, coursing, modifiers, and kitchen routing? |
| Quick service | Terminal, handhelds, kiosks, order display, pickup screen | Are kiosk and display fees separate? |
| Inventory-heavy retail | Scanners, label printers, scales, back-office workstation | Does the hardware support receiving, labels, and stock operations? |
Ask whether hardware is purchased, rented, financed, or returned after cancellation; whether it works with another processor; what the warranty covers; and how quickly replacement equipment can arrive. Toast’s pricing page is a useful example of why a “$0 per month” offer should be read together with hardware and implementation conditions.

What should a growing business verify?
A POS that works for one register can become difficult at three locations or several hundred employees. Verify centralized catalog control, location-level permissions, stock transfers, consolidated reporting, franchise support, API access, accounting integrations, ecommerce synchronization, data export, support escalation, and the migration path if the business outgrows the platform.
Multi-location pricing may be charged per location, register, terminal, employee, catalog, online store, kitchen display, or kiosk. Shopify POS Pro and Square’s location plans demonstrate why the buyer should model the next location—not only today’s bill.

What data can the merchant export?
Before signing a long-term POS contract, ask for a sample export and confirm that the merchant can retrieve customer records, products, variants, historical sales, inventory, gift cards, loyalty balances, employee records, tax data, orders, payments, images, and restaurant menus or modifiers.
Also ask how long historical data remains available after cancellation, whether exports cost extra, whether the format is usable by another system, and whether API access has separate limits or fees. A POS that is easy to start but difficult to leave can create switching costs that outweigh a low introductory price.
How should you choose between the finalists?
Shortlist two or three vendors that match the business type, then score the finalists against the same requirements. A defensible comparison should consider published pricing, feature documentation, support materials, and independent comparison coverage; it should not claim hands-on testing unless hands-on testing actually occurred.
| Criterion | Suggested weight | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Business-type fit | 20% | Retail, restaurant, service, mobile, ecommerce, or ticketing workflow coverage |
| Total cost and transparency | 15% | Subscription, processing, hardware, add-ons, support, and contract clarity |
| Payment flexibility and rates | 15% | Processor lock-in, effective rate, online and keyed pricing, and contract |
| Inventory or menu depth | 15% | Purchasing, modifiers, transfers, variants, ingredient tracking, and reporting |
| Setup and daily usability | 10% | Catalog setup, employee training, checkout speed, and administration |
| Hardware and offline reliability | 10% | Device choices, outage behavior, replacement, warranty, and ownership |
| Integrations and ecommerce | 5% | Accounting, payroll, scheduling, ordering, delivery, and online store connections |
| Reporting and employee controls | 5% | Permissions, labor, tips, sales, tax, and location reports |
| Support, migration, and scalability | 5% | Support hours, data export, APIs, additional locations, and cancellation |
Adjust the weights for the business. Retailers should increase inventory, purchasing, variants, returns, ecommerce synchronization, and multi-location management. Restaurants should increase menu modifiers, tables, kitchen workflows, online ordering, tips, labor, hardware durability, and offline operation. Service businesses should increase appointments, deposits, recurring billing, client profiles, memberships, commissions, and no-show controls.
POS buying checklist: what should you ask before signing?
- What is the complete monthly cost at my current sales volume and average ticket?
- What are the card-present, online, keyed-entry, invoice, card-on-file, ACH, and gift-card rates?
- Is payment processing locked to the POS, flexible, mixed by plan, or quote-dependent?
- What hardware must I buy, rent, finance, or return?
- Are hardware, installation, onboarding, migration, training, support, PCI, statement, or minimum-volume fees separate?
- Which inventory, menu, payroll, loyalty, marketing, scheduling, kiosk, kitchen-display, ecommerce, and delivery features are add-ons?
- What happens during an internet outage, and are offline payments limited?
- Can the system export customers, products, sales, inventory, gift cards, loyalty, employees, and tax data?
- How are refunds, chargebacks, disputes, tips, taxes, and reconciliation handled?
- What is the contract term, renewal policy, cancellation fee, equipment obligation, and post-cancellation data-access policy?
- Can the system support another location, register, catalog, online store, or kitchen without a major migration?
- Does the vendor support lawful surcharging or cash-discount programs in the merchant’s state and card-network context?
Surcharging, cash discounts, PCI compliance, tax treatment, and data retention can involve current U.S. law, card-network rules, and processor requirements. Confirm those issues with the processor and appropriate professional or authoritative sources before enabling a program.
Which POS should you choose?
Choose Square for a fast, broad small-business starting point; Shopify POS when ecommerce drives the business; Lightspeed Retail for complex retail inventory; Toast or TouchBistro for restaurant operations; Helcim when payment-cost transparency is the priority; KORONA when processor flexibility or ticketing matters; Loyverse for a free simple starter system; and Clover for modular dedicated hardware.
Choose SumUp when bundled marketing and customer tools justify its higher plan cost. Consider PayPal Point of Sale if the business already operates heavily through PayPal. Request written proposals from Revel, SpotOn, and Heartland when the operation is larger, specialized, or already tied to those merchant-services ecosystems. Consider eHopper only after verifying current U.S. pricing, processing, hardware, support, and feature limits.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best POS software for a small business in 2026?
Square is the best general-purpose starting point for many U.S. small businesses because it offers free entry-level software, broad features, mobile hardware, and published pricing. Square may not be the lowest total-cost option for high-volume merchants or businesses needing processor independence and advanced vertical workflows.
What is the cheapest POS system?
Loyverse lists its core POS tools as free, while Square offers a free entry-level plan and KORONA lists Core from $59 per month. Free or low-cost software can still require payment processing, hardware, employee, inventory, marketing, or other add-on fees.
Which POS is best for restaurants?
Toast is the broadest restaurant-first recommendation, while TouchBistro is a strong alternative for independent restaurants and cafes. Compare menus, modifiers, tables, kitchen workflows, online ordering, hardware, processing, implementation, payroll, add-ons, and contract terms rather than comparing subscription prices alone.
Can a POS system work without internet?
Some POS systems support offline checkout, but offline capability can impose transaction limits, delayed payment risk, delayed inventory updates, and hardware restrictions. Ask the vendor exactly what continues offline and what happens if an offline transaction is later declined.
Can a merchant change payment processors after choosing a POS?
Processor flexibility depends on the exact POS, plan, geography, and reseller arrangement. KORONA advertises that its Core plan can work with any processor, while other systems may be processor-locked or quote-dependent; confirm the terms in writing before purchasing hardware or signing a contract.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Do not choose a POS by the monthly software fee alone. Match the system to the business model, calculate processing and hardware costs using real sales data, verify offline behavior and data export, and compare written quotes from two or three finalists. For most new small businesses start with Square; for ecommerce choose Shopify POS, for advanced retail consider Lightspeed Retail, for restaurants compare Toast with TouchBistro, and for payment transparency model Helcim against the alternatives.
