The best first tool is HWiNFO: use it to identify the hardware, watch temperatures and clock speeds, and log what happens during the failure. Then choose a targeted test—MemTest86 or Memtest86+ for serious RAM suspicion, CrystalDiskInfo for SMART/NVMe storage data, and OCCT for controlled CPU, GPU, memory, and combined stability testing.
This list includes 15 useful Windows PC diagnostic utilities, but they do different jobs. A monitor can reveal symptoms without proving a fault; a stress test can expose instability without naming its cause; and CHKDSK checks the Windows file system rather than the drive’s complete electronics.
What hardware diagnostic software can—and cannot—tell you
Hardware diagnostic software does not provide one universal pass/fail verdict for a Windows PC. Different tools examine different evidence: HWiNFO and the identification utilities report hardware and operating conditions; SMART/NVMe readers report storage telemetry; bootable memory tools test RAM outside Windows; and stress utilities deliberately load a CPU, GPU, memory subsystem, or power delivery system.
A clean result means that the tested component behaved correctly under that particular test and configuration. It does not prove that every component is healthy, that a drive cannot fail suddenly, or that a game will never crash. For the most useful diagnosis, start with inventory and monitoring, test one subsystem at a time, record the result, and then use a combined workload only if necessary.

The 15 tools below are grouped by what they actually do rather than ranked as if they were interchangeable.
1. HWiNFO — best overall hardware inventory and sensor monitor
HWiNFO is the best first download for most Windows troubleshooting sessions. It identifies the CPU, motherboard, memory, graphics card, drives, peripherals, firmware, and many low-level device details. Its Sensors view can show temperatures, voltages, fan speeds, clock rates, power readings, and utilization while the computer is operating.
Use it to establish a baseline before changing anything, spot thermal throttling, compare advertised hardware with installed hardware, and log intermittent behavior. It can save reports, record sensor data over time, and create alerts. Its read-only design makes it useful for observation without modifying hardware settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Best for: inventory, temperatures, clocks, voltages, throttling, and intermittent-problem logging.
- Platform: Windows, WinPE, and other editions covering x86, x64, ARM64, and some legacy environments.
- Reboot required: No for normal use.
- Limitation: HWiNFO monitors and reports; it does not independently stress-test the CPU, GPU, RAM, or power supply.
For an overheating investigation, begin logging before launching the application or game that causes trouble. Look for a repeatable relationship between temperature, clock speed, fan behavior, and the failure. Do not apply one universal “safe” temperature threshold: limits vary by processor, graphics card, motherboard, firmware, cooling system, and workload.
2. OCCT — best all-in-one stability tester
OCCT is the most versatile choice when the symptom is a crash, freeze, reboot, artifact, or suspected instability. It provides separate CPU, GPU, RAM, 3D, and power-supply-oriented tests, along with monitoring, benchmarking, custom tests, reports, and report comparison. It also has Linux capabilities.
The important diagnostic advantage is isolation. Run the CPU test, GPU test, and memory test separately rather than immediately starting the heaviest combined workload. If only the GPU test fails, the graphics card, its driver, cooling, or power connection becomes more suspicious. If individual tests pass but a combined test causes a reboot, consider power delivery, motherboard behavior, total heat, or an overclock that is stable in isolation but not together.
- Best for: controlled stability testing of a new build, overclock, undervolt, CPU, GPU, RAM, or combined system.
- Platform: Windows, with Linux capabilities documented by the project.
- Reboot required: No to launch a normal test.
- Limitation: A stress test creates an unusually high, artificial load and can expose a problem without identifying the failed part by itself.
Monitor HWiNFO or OCCT’s own readings while testing. Stop if temperatures, fan behavior, power behavior, odors, noises, or shutdown behavior appear abnormal. Return an overclock or undervolt to stock settings before diagnosing a fault; otherwise, the configuration itself is one of the variables.
3. MemTest86 — best established bootable RAM diagnostic
MemTest86 from PassMark runs from bootable USB media rather than inside Windows. That matters because Windows and background applications cannot reserve every part of memory for testing. MemTest86 supports current memory technologies including DDR5, uses multiple test algorithms, supports UEFI x86 and ARM systems, and can save logs and HTML reports.
It is particularly valuable when Windows produces memory-related blue screens, applications crash unpredictably, a new memory kit was installed, or the PC fails before login. Create the bootable media using the publisher’s installer, boot the PC from it through the UEFI boot menu, and allow the test to complete. Save the report if it records an error.
- Best for: independent, configurable RAM testing when Windows is unreliable.
- Platform: bootable UEFI x86/ARM systems; it is not dependent on an installed Windows session.
- Reboot required: Yes—boot from the prepared USB drive.
- Limitation: An error confirms a memory-subsystem problem, but does not always identify the exact DIMM. The module, slot, memory controller, BIOS settings, motherboard, or memory profile may be involved.
If errors appear, turn off XMP or EXPO and return memory to default settings. Then test modules individually and try different slots if the system design permits. Do not conclude that the first named stick is definitely the only failed part.

4. Memtest86+ — best open-source boot-level RAM alternative
Memtest86+ is a free, open-source, stand-alone memory tester that operates independently of the operating system and can access almost all system memory. It is a strong alternative for users who prefer an open-source project or want a second boot-level opinion.
The project’s official site lists version 8.10, released May 16, 2026, with newer Intel support, DDR5 timing fixes, Secure Boot shim work, and bug fixes. Check the project page before downloading because bootloader and hardware support can change.
- Best for: independent RAM testing without Windows and as an open-source alternative to MemTest86.
- Platform: bootable PC firmware environments.
- Reboot required: Yes.
- Limitation: Memtest86+ is not Microsoft-signed, so Secure Boot may need to be disabled before it will boot. Re-enable Secure Boot afterward if appropriate.
As with MemTest86, an error identifies an unstable memory subsystem, not necessarily one defective memory stick. Test at stock settings and investigate the module, slot, BIOS, motherboard, and processor memory controller.
5. CrystalDiskInfo — best simple Windows drive-health reader
CrystalDiskInfo provides an accessible view of HDD and SSD health information. Depending on the drive and controller, it can display SMART or NVMe data, health status, temperature, firmware, serial number, interface, transfer mode, power-on count, and related attributes. It supports many internal drives, NVMe devices, selected USB devices, and Intel RAID configurations.
Use it early when a PC is slow, files disappear, Windows reports storage warnings, or you are screening a used computer. Pay attention to warnings, critical attributes, temperature, and whether the drive is operating in the expected interface mode.
- Best for: a quick read of SMART/NVMe health and drive identity.
- Platform: Windows.
- Reboot required: No for reading information.
- Limitation: A Good or healthy status is not a guarantee against sudden electronic, controller, firmware, or mechanical failure.
If the data matters, back it up before investigating further. A drive that is degrading should be copied or imaged before repair attempts. Also check Windows storage events because SMART data and operating-system errors can reveal different parts of the problem.
6. CPU-Z — best lightweight CPU, motherboard, and memory identifier
CPU-Z is a compact identification and validation tool. It reports live information about the processor, motherboard, BIOS, memory modules, memory channels, timings, and basic graphics hardware. Its validation feature can create a shareable record of the detected configuration and overclock information.
Use CPU-Z when a specification seems wrong, a memory kit is running at an unexpected speed, a used PC may contain a different processor than advertised, or you need a quick platform inventory before selecting a test.
- Best for: identifying the CPU, board, BIOS, RAM configuration, and basic platform state.
- Platform: Windows.
- Reboot required: No.
- Limitation: It verifies identity and reports current settings; it is not a comprehensive physical fault or stability test.
7. GPU-Z — best graphics-card identification and sensor utility
GPU-Z focuses on the graphics card. It can show the GPU name and revision, manufacturing process, BIOS information, bus interface, memory type and size, clock rates, driver details, and overclock values. It is useful for checking whether a card is represented accurately and for spotting questionable specifications in a used or second-hand system.

- Best for: GPU identity, BIOS, memory configuration, clocks, drivers, and basic sensors.
- Platform: Windows.
- Reboot required: No for normal inspection.
- Limitation: It is primarily an information and sensor utility, not a complete GPU stress test.
8. Windows Memory Diagnostic — best no-download first RAM check
Windows includes a basic memory tester that is convenient when you need a quick first check. Press Win+R, enter mdsched.exe, and choose whether to restart immediately or check on the next restart. The computer boots into the diagnostic environment and then returns to Windows.
Results normally appear in a Windows Memory Diagnostic notification. If you miss it, open Event Viewer and browse to Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > MemoryDiagnostics-Results > Debug.
- Best for: a quick, built-in check when no download or USB drive is available.
- Platform: Windows.
- Reboot required: Yes.
- Limitation: It offers less configuration and independence than MemTest86 or Memtest86+, so persistent or intermittent problems deserve a dedicated bootable test.
9. DirectX Diagnostic Tool — best built-in graphics, audio, and driver report
DxDiag is a Windows information collector rather than a hardware stress test. Press Win+R, enter dxdiag, inspect the System, Display, Sound, and Input tabs, and select Save All Information to create a report for technical support.
The report can expose the Windows version, DirectX information, display adapter details, driver versions, audio devices, and reported problems. It is useful for game-launch failures, missing features, sound problems, and driver/API compatibility issues.
- Best for: documenting graphics, sound, DirectX, and driver configuration.
- Platform: Windows.
- Reboot required: No to collect the report.
- Limitation: DxDiag does not prove that a GPU is stable, that a driver is optimal, or that the hardware is physically healthy.
10. CHKDSK — best built-in file-system and volume-integrity check
CHKDSK examines Windows file-system structures and volume metadata. It is not a replacement for SMART or NVMe health monitoring and does not prove that a drive’s electronics, controller, or NAND cells are healthy.
Open Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator and choose the command that matches the problem:
chkdsk C: /scanperforms an online scan of the Windows volume without immediately taking it offline.chkdsk C: /ffixes logical file-system errors. Windows may schedule it for the next restart if the volume is in use.chkdsk C: /rattempts to locate physical disk errors and recover readable information; it also includes the logical-fix behavior and can take substantially longer.
Back up important files before using repair options. If the drive is showing signs of physical failure, prioritize copying or imaging the data. CHKDSK can change file-system metadata, and a failing drive may not have enough remaining reliability for repeated scans. Use CrystalDiskInfo and Windows storage events to investigate hardware health separately.

Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool checks processor brand identification, operating frequency, selected processor features, and processor functionality through a stress test. It provides PASS/FAIL results and can save result files for documentation.
Intel’s current download information lists release 4.1.9.41 and support for Windows 10, Windows 11, and supported Windows Server versions. Verify compatibility before installing; it is intended for supported Intel processors, not AMD systems.
- Best for: a manufacturer-provided functional check of a supported Intel processor.
- Platform: compatible Windows systems.
- Reboot required: Usually no to run the application, although a restart may be requested by installation or system state.
- Limitation: Cooling, BIOS settings, power limits, and available system resources can affect the result. A failure needs investigation rather than automatic CPU replacement.
12. Intel Processor Identification Utility — best Intel specification checker
Intel Processor Identification Utility identifies supported Intel processor specifications and displays information about graphics, chipset, supported technologies, and other capabilities. Intel’s current download page lists version 8.1.54 for Windows and support for 7th-generation and newer processors.

This is useful when verifying a refurbished PC, checking processor features before troubleshooting software, or confirming that firmware and Windows see the expected CPU. It is an identification and capability tool, not a sustained stability test.
Recommended Free Tools
- Best for: confirming Intel CPU identity, specifications, graphics, chipset, and supported technologies.
- Platform: Windows systems meeting the stated Intel compatibility requirements.
- Reboot required: No for normal identification.
- Limitation: Correct identification does not demonstrate that the processor remains stable under load.
13. FurMark — focused GPU thermal and load test
FurMark is a commonly used focused GPU stress-testing utility. It can create a very demanding graphics workload, making it useful for observing GPU temperatures, clocks, fan behavior, crashes, and visible artifacting when paired with HWiNFO or GPU-Z.
Its narrow purpose is also its main limitation. A FurMark pass is not proof that a graphics card will be stable in every game, rendering application, or driver version. Conversely, a failure under an extreme workload may expose cooling or power behavior that does not occur during ordinary use.
- Best for: a controlled GPU thermal and load check.
- Platform: Check the publisher’s current build and operating-system support before downloading.
- Reboot required: No for normal testing.
- Limitation: Extreme load, limited workload realism, and no complete diagnosis of the GPU, VRAM, driver, or power supply.
Watch the readings continuously, use stock settings, and stop if temperatures or system behavior are abnormal. Download it only from the official publisher or a trusted source.
14. Prime95 — specialist CPU and memory workload
Prime95 is an optional specialist workload for users who need a very sustained mathematical load on the CPU and memory subsystem. It is often useful when validating a manual overclock, undervolt, cooling solution, or long-running computational workload.

- Best for: exposing CPU, memory, cooling, and configuration instability under a sustained mathematical workload.
- Platform: Check the current publisher build and supported operating systems before use.
- Reboot required: No for normal testing.
- Limitation: Workload-specific success does not guarantee stability in games, creative applications, idle operation, or every other workload. It can also produce unusually high temperatures.
Prime95 is not the default choice for every diagnosis. OCCT is generally easier when you need to separate CPU, GPU, RAM, and combined-load behavior in one interface.
15. UNIGINE Heaven Benchmark — repeatable graphics workload and benchmark
UNIGINE Heaven is better understood as a graphics benchmark and visual stability check than as a complete hardware diagnostic suite. Its configurable settings make it useful for repeating the same graphics workload while watching GPU clocks, temperatures, performance consistency, and visible artifacting.
It can help compare a system before and after a driver, cooling, or graphics-setting change. Look for crashes, flickering, corrupted textures, unusual clock drops, or inconsistent performance. A benchmark result alone does not isolate whether the cause is the GPU, driver, power delivery, memory, or thermal system.
- Best for: repeatable graphics load, visual artifact checking, and comparative performance.
- Platform: Verify the current UNIGINE build and operating-system support before downloading.
- Reboot required: No for normal use.
- Limitation: It does not test RAM, storage, CPU health, or every modern game engine.
A safe Windows PC diagnostic workflow
1. Protect data before testing storage
If the symptom involves missing files, clicking noises, repeated I/O errors, a disappearing drive, or a SMART warning, copy important data first. Use CrystalDiskInfo to read health information and check Windows storage events. If Windows cannot access the drive reliably, a compatible SATA-to-USB adapter or NVMe enclosure can help you attach it to another computer—but match the enclosure to the drive’s interface. An M.2 SATA drive and an M.2 NVMe drive are not interchangeable simply because they share a physical shape.

3. Return the system to known-good settings
Before blaming hardware, temporarily load BIOS defaults and disable CPU, GPU, XMP, EXPO, undervolt, and other overclocking profiles. A system that passes at stock settings but fails with a memory or voltage profile has a configuration or compatibility problem even if every component is nominally functional.
4. Test memory outside Windows
Use Windows Memory Diagnostic for a convenient first check. If the failure is intermittent, serious, or occurs before login, boot MemTest86 or Memtest86+ from a USB drive. For an error, test one memory module at a time and compare slots, while keeping settings at stock. Memory errors can originate in a DIMM, slot, motherboard, CPU memory controller, BIOS, or memory profile.

Helpful accessories for boot and service work
A spare bootable USB flash drive is the practical media for MemTest86 or Memtest86+; the drive holds the boot files and diagnostic program, not a special hardware-testing circuit. If you will open a desktop or reseat components, a PC repair toolkit and an anti-static wrist strap can make the work easier and safer, but neither performs an electronic diagnosis. If removing a cooler, use thermal paste for CPU only when reinstallation requires it and follow the cooler manufacturer’s application guidance.
Disclosure: These are optional equipment suggestions. They are not the diagnostic utilities themselves, and availability and pricing can change.
5. Reproduce the failure one subsystem at a time
Use OCCT to test CPU, GPU, RAM, and 3D behavior separately. Keep HWiNFO logging in the background if possible. Then, only if individual tests pass, try a combined workload to investigate power, total heat, or interactions between components.
For a graphics-specific check, use Heaven for a repeatable benchmark and visual inspection. Use FurMark only when you specifically need an intense GPU thermal load. For a very sustained CPU and memory workload, Prime95 is an optional specialist choice. Keep the machine at stock settings during diagnosis and stop any test that produces abnormal cooling or power behavior.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match6. Collect evidence instead of relying on a single pass
Save OCCT reports, MemTest86 or Memtest86+ logs, DxDiag output, HWiNFO sensor logs, and screenshots of CrystalDiskInfo warnings. Record the exact test, settings, driver version, BIOS state, temperature behavior, and whether the failure was a crash, error, artifact, freeze, or reboot.
A reported error identifies a condition that needs investigation; it does not always identify the failed component. For example, a GPU crash may result from the card, VRAM, driver, power supply, motherboard slot, or excessive heat. A CPU test failure may involve cooling, BIOS settings, memory, power limits, or the processor itself.
What to do with the results
| Result | Reasonable next step |
|---|---|
| SMART/NVMe warning, rapidly worsening health, or repeated storage errors | Back up or image the drive and plan replacement. Use CHKDSK only for a separately identified file-system problem. |
| Memory errors at stock settings | Test modules and slots individually, inspect BIOS compatibility, and isolate the DIMM, board, or memory controller. |
| CPU-only OCCT, Prime95, or Intel diagnostic failure | Check cooler mounting, temperatures, BIOS defaults, power delivery, and memory settings before declaring the CPU defective. |
| GPU artifacts or crashes under Heaven or FurMark | Check temperatures, clocks, driver state, power connectors, and stock settings; compare with another workload. |
| Only a combined load fails | Investigate total system power, cooling, motherboard behavior, and interactions between individually stable components. |
| All tests pass but an application still crashes | Investigate the application, driver, operating system, plug-ins, game files, and workload-specific compatibility. |
Optional Windows maintenance software is not hardware diagnosis
If the PC is merely sluggish because of disk clutter, unwanted applications, privacy settings, missing-update alerts, or general Windows maintenance issues, a PC cleanup and optimization software option such as Outbyte PC Repair may address that separate problem. Outbyte describes features including disk-space cleanup, performance adjustments, Windows-feature changes, missing-update alerts, potentially unwanted application scanning, privacy controls, and application-crash logs.
Do not use it as a substitute for MemTest86, CrystalDiskInfo, CHKDSK, DxDiag, or controlled CPU/GPU testing. It complements rather than replaces antivirus software, and cleanup or optimization cannot prove that a failing component is healthy.
Download and safety checklist
- Download each utility from its official publisher and verify that the version supports your Windows edition and hardware.
- Back up valuable files before storage repair, drive removal, BIOS changes, or any test that may trigger repeated crashes.
- Return overclocked, undervolted, and memory-profile settings to stock before diagnosing instability.
- Monitor temperatures, clocks, fan speeds, voltages, and power behavior during stress tests.
- Stop a test when cooling or power behavior is abnormal; a diagnostic utility is not worth damaging hardware or losing data.
- Keep Secure Boot in mind when using Memtest86+. If you disable it to boot the tester, restore the setting afterward when appropriate.
- Do not infer that a “Good” drive status, a CHKDSK success, or one stress-test pass guarantees future reliability.
- Change one variable at a time and retain the reports, settings, and timestamps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one program test every part of a Windows PC?
No. HWiNFO is an excellent starting point because it inventories hardware and logs operating conditions, but it does not stress-test every component. Use a combination of monitoring, storage-health checks, bootable memory testing, and targeted CPU or GPU workloads based on the symptom.
Which tool should I use to test faulty RAM?
Use Windows Memory Diagnostic for a convenient first check. For crashes before login, intermittent failures, a new memory kit, or results that need more confidence, boot MemTest86 or Memtest86+ from USB and test at stock BIOS settings.
Does CHKDSK test whether an SSD or hard drive is healthy?
No. CHKDSK checks Windows file-system structures and volume metadata. CrystalDiskInfo reads SMART or NVMe health information. Back up important data before repair operations, because a successful CHKDSK scan does not prove that the drive electronics will not fail.
What does a failed hardware stress test prove?
A stress-test error identifies an unstable condition, but not always the failed component. CPU, GPU, RAM, motherboard, cooling, power delivery, firmware, and drivers can interact. Return the PC to stock settings, test one subsystem at a time, and record temperatures, settings, and reports.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The Bottom Line
Start with HWiNFO for facts and sensor logs, use CrystalDiskInfo for storage telemetry, boot MemTest86 or Memtest86+ for serious RAM suspicion, and use OCCT to isolate CPU, GPU, memory, and combined-load instability. Add DxDiag, CPU-Z, GPU-Z, CHKDSK, or the specialist tools only when the symptom calls for them. No single pass proves that the entire PC is healthy.
