The available 2026 comparison names 14 email-encryption options, not 25, and it does not independently validate every provider. Treat the names below as a starting shortlist—not a ranking or proof that each product currently fits your needs. For many organizations, the first decision is whether existing Microsoft 365 controls are sufficient or whether a separate service is needed for key custody, recipient experience, or workflow requirements.

Which email encryption companies are on the substantiated shortlist?

Expert Insights’ 2026 comparison names the following 14 candidates. It describes an evaluation across encryption types, compliance support, sender and recipient ease, and post-send controls, but its labels are not a universal ranking. The comparison is secondary evidence; the names alone do not establish current features, certifications, pricing, or suitability.

What does “email encryption” protect?

Encryption in transit

TLS protects a connection as mail travels between servers. It is important, but it does not by itself mean that only the sender and intended recipient can read the message. A message may be decrypted by a central service after the recipient is validated.

Message-level or end-to-end protection

Message-level controls can protect content beyond the transport connection, while peer-to-peer encryption relies on recipient-held keys. These are different security models, not interchangeable meanings of “encrypted.” Microsoft recommends S/MIME when either organization requires true peer-to-peer encryption. Ask vendors who holds the keys, where decryption occurs, and what happens when a recipient opens a message.

Is Microsoft Purview enough for Microsoft 365?

Microsoft 365 has several distinct mechanisms: Purview Message Encryption, S/MIME, Information Rights Management (IRM), and TLS. Purview Message Encryption can be configured through policies and mail-flow rules, and documentation describes access in Outlook or through a web portal depending on the recipient’s environment. It may be a practical first option when an organization already uses Microsoft 365, but the right choice depends on the required encryption model and controls.

Check licensing, message size, and post-send controls

  • Microsoft’s FAQ says each user benefiting from message encryption needs a license; confirm eligibility against current plan terms because packaging can change.
  • The FAQ lists a maximum message size of 25 MB including attachments. This is a changeable service limit, so verify it before relying on it: Microsoft Purview Message Encryption FAQ.
  • Microsoft says Advanced Message Encryption can support expiration and revocation for externally shared messages under documented conditions. Portal-based recipient access, custom branding, and rule setup affect whether these controls apply; do not assume that every encrypted message can be revoked or expired.

When might a separate provider be worth evaluating?

A separate service may be relevant when its documented key-management model, automation, platform support, audit features, or external-recipient workflow addresses a requirement that existing mail controls do not. Compare the operational experience as carefully as the cryptography: a secure workflow that recipients cannot complete can create support burden or lead users to choose unsafe workarounds.

Virtru for Google Workspace or Microsoft environments

Virtru describes email encryption for Gmail and Google Workspace as well as Microsoft systems. Its product material says Private Keystore lets an organization host keys in a chosen location, including use with Google client-side encryption. Those are vendor statements; validate the actual configuration, contractual terms, and fit for your organization rather than assuming the option provides a particular compliance outcome.

Virtru also hosts a customer testimonial from Mark Dieterich, Director of IT and Security at Brown University, praising its security and compliance fit, adoption, audit, and control features. That is a vendor-hosted testimonial, not independent product testing.

Proton Mail as a hosted email option

TechRadar’s 2026 review describes Proton Mail as a privacy-oriented email provider and reports default encryption among Proton users and password-protected messages to external recipients. That is secondary, time-sensitive reporting, not confirmation of current business-plan details. Check Proton’s current business features, recipient workflow, and pricing directly before deciding whether a hosted email provider suits your organization.

  • Protection model: Does it protect only transport, protect message content through a service, or support peer-to-peer encryption? Where and when can the message be decrypted?
  • Key custody: Who controls the keys? Is customer-managed or customer-hosted key custody available, and what does that choice mean for recovery and administration?
  • Sending workflow: Is protection automatic through policy or triggered by the sender? Can rules target particular recipients, data, or message types?
  • Recipient access: Can recipients use their existing mail client, or must they authenticate through a portal? What account, password, or verification step is required for people outside your organization?
  • After sending: Are expiration, revocation, forwarding restrictions, and audit records supported? Under what conditions, and do controls apply to every recipient and message type?
  • Platform and compliance fit: Does the service work with your Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace configuration? Ask for evidence tied to the exact product, deployment, and compliance requirement—not a general marketing statement.
  • Deployment and commercial terms: Confirm eligible licenses, integration effort, support responsibilities, regional availability, contract pricing, and renewal terms. Most enterprise prices in the comparison are quote-based, so no reliable price ranking is established here.

How to choose a sensible starting point

  1. Define the requirement. Decide whether you need transport encryption, content controls for external messages, or recipient-held-key encryption. Specify whether expiration, revocation, or auditability is mandatory.
  2. Map the mail environment. Record your mail platform, user licensing, external-recipient patterns, and administrative capacity. Check whether existing Microsoft 365 mechanisms already meet the requirement.
  3. Test the recipient journey. Have representative internal and external recipients complete the actual open-and-authenticate flow. Measure the support steps your team would need to handle; do not infer ease of use from a feature list.
  4. Validate control claims. Ask vendors to demonstrate key custody, policy automation, audit access, and any expiration or revocation behavior in the configuration you would buy.
  5. Confirm current terms in writing. Verify licensing, size limits, platform compatibility, regional availability, compliance evidence, and full contract cost before procurement.
