To text more efficiently on Android, use the input method that fits the moment, make Google Messages handle routine tasks such as scheduling and searching, and turn on RCS when everyone in a conversation can use it. These 12 tricks use Gboard and Google Messages features; names, menus, and availability can vary by app version, device, carrier, and region. They offer options—not guaranteed speed gains.
How can I text faster on Android?
Start with the keyboard and messaging tools you already use. Gboard offers swipe, voice, and handwriting input, while Google Messages includes shortcuts for finding, composing, and managing messages.
1. Swipe-type with Gboard Glide Typing
Instead of tapping every letter, slide your finger from letter to letter without lifting it between characters. Gboard uses the traced path to suggest a word. Check the suggestion before sending, especially for names or unfamiliar terms. Glide Typing may suit some people and messages better than others; it is not a guaranteed speed improvement.

Tap the microphone on Gboard and speak when typing is inconvenient. Review the result before sending: names, punctuation, and words in noisy surroundings may need correction. Voice typing is an alternative input method, not a promise of perfect transcription.

3. Try Gboard handwriting input
When handwriting feels more natural than tapping or swiping, try Gboard’s handwriting input if it is available on your device. Draw the characters in the input area and check the converted text. The feature listing does not establish that a separate stylus is required.
4. Search Gboard for emoji or GIFs
Use Gboard’s emoji search or GIF options to find a specific reaction or animation instead of paging through categories. Search availability and results can vary. Choose a result that fits the conversation; an emoji or GIF is not always clearer than a short reply.

What can Google Messages do for routine message tasks?
These shortcuts apply to Google Messages. If your default texting app is different, its controls may not work the same way.

- In Google Messages, open a conversation and write the message.
- Press and hold Send.
- Choose a suggested time or select a date and time, then confirm the schedule.
If the phone has no Wi-Fi or mobile data at the scheduled time, Google Messages sends the message after it reconnects. Check the conversation for the scheduled message before relying on it for a time-sensitive note.

6. Search old conversations
Use search in Google Messages to look for text or other matching items, then apply the available filters to narrow the results. Searching is useful when you remember a phrase or detail but not which conversation contains it. Filter names and options may differ by app version.
7. Reply to the exact message
Swipe a message from left to right to reply to that particular message. The reply quotes or references the selected message, helping make the subject clear in a busy conversation. If the gesture does not work, check the app’s current controls or reply options.

8. Copy a recognized verification code
When Google Messages recognizes a verification code, use the Copy {Code} option shown with the message, then paste it into the app or website requesting the code. This only appears when the app identifies a code; otherwise, copy it using the usual text-selection controls.

Select a message and pinch outward to make its text larger; pinch inward to return to the default size. This can make a message easier to read without changing your reply or editing its contents.

How can I handle voice messages more carefully?
10. Record a voice message as a draft
Google Messages lets you record a voice message and review it before sending. Listen to the recording, then tap Send only when you are ready. Recording it does not send it automatically.
11. Read a voice-message transcript when available
For a received voice message, look for View transcript if you would rather read than listen. Transcription depends on feature availability and settings. If the option is missing, check Google Messages settings; the transcript may not be supported or enabled for your setup.
When is RCS useful for texting?
12. Use RCS when the conversation supports it
RCS can add higher-quality media sharing, typing indicators, read receipts, and group-chat controls, and it can send messages over Wi-Fi or mobile data. The listed capabilities depend on support from the provider, carrier, device, and region; participants need RCS enabled for them to work in a conversation. If a chat does not offer the features you expect, check RCS availability and settings for your setup.
Google says RCS conversations between Google Messages users can use end-to-end encryption. Cross-platform encryption availability should not be assumed for every Android–iPhone chat: Google’s May 11, 2026 announcement described a beta rollout for iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages. Availability can change as rollout conditions change. During carrier number verification when setting up RCS, standard text message rates may apply; Google says RCS typically does not cost users extra, but carrier terms matter.
