A Phoenix New Times roundup published August 6, 2025, reported 12 restaurant, bar, and brewery closures across metro Phoenix. Hap’s Pit Barbecue is the closure behind the headline’s “one after 30 years”: the family-run business had served the Valley for more than three decades. The list also includes long-running Sizzler and Seafood Market & Restaurant, plus local branches of chains that still had other locations at the time.
This is a dated roundup, not a live directory; closure status and location counts below reflect what Phoenix New Times reported on that date. Phoenix New Times’ August 6, 2025 roundup.

- Hap’s Pit Barbecue: The barbecue business closed in mid-July 2025 after serving the Valley for more than 30 years. It began with a homemade smoker and cart outside the family car dealership, later became a food truck, and eventually opened a storefront at Washington and 48th streets.
- Sizzler: The Maryvale restaurant at Indian School Road and 51st Avenue closed after more than 40 years. Phoenix New Times described it as the last Sizzler in the Valley; at publication, the only Arizona location it identified was in Flagstaff.
- Seafood Market & Restaurant: The Mesa restaurant and fish market at Village Square in Dana Park closed after serving customers since 1991. Its menu included seafood, steak, pasta, and salads, and its market sold raw fish for home cooking.
Restaurant and bar closures around the Valley
- La Piazza al Forno: The Glendale Neapolitan-style pizzeria opened in 2007 and expanded to two additional Valley locations. It later returned to its original location during the pandemic; after its owners went separate ways, that restaurant closed.
- Moto Sushi: The pan-Asian restaurant and beer bar on 16th Street, just south of Glendale Avenue, served sushi, pho, curry, dumplings, and Thai- and Japanese-style noodles.
- Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant: The Chandler location closed abruptly after two decades. Phoenix New Times reported that one Arizona location remained, in Peoria.
- Preston’s Steakhouse: The north Scottsdale restaurant in The Citadel shopping plaza on Pinnacle Peak Road closed after more than 10 years. The restaurant’s website attributed the closure to upcoming building repairs.
- Drunk Munk: The Old Town Scottsdale restaurant, bar, and patio closed. The space had previously been home to Cowboy Ciao for more than two decades; Drunk Munk opened there in 2019.
- West Alley BBQ & Smokehouse: The downtown Chandler Tennessee-style barbecue restaurant and live-music venue closed after seven years.
Brewing and individual chain locations
- T.C.B.C. Beer: The Litchfield Park brewery closed after its lease at its Honeysuckle Street location was not renewed, according to an announcement from its owners. The business had moved to that location in 2021.
- MOD Pizza: The Arcadia location on Indian School Road closed; the roundup said other Valley locations remained open.
- Birdcall: The location at Scottsdale Road and Shea Boulevard closed. Phoenix New Times reported other Valley locations in Phoenix and Gilbert, as well as the chain’s operations in Colorado and Texas.
Which closures affected only one location?
Not every closure meant a chain left Arizona or the Valley. In its August 6, 2025 report, Phoenix New Times said MOD Pizza had other Valley locations, Birdcall remained in Phoenix and Gilbert, and Abuelo’s still had an Arizona restaurant in Peoria. By contrast, its roundup called the Maryvale Sizzler the last Valley location and identified Flagstaff as the state’s only remaining Sizzler.

The roundup identified specific reasons for two closures: Preston’s Steakhouse cited upcoming building repairs, while T.C.B.C. Beer’s owners said the lease at its Litchfield Park location was not renewed. It did not establish reasons for the other closures, so no cause should be inferred for them.
