There is no universally best exotic pet for an apartment. These 12 species are candidates only if your lease and local laws allow them and you can provide the right enclosure, daily care, enrichment, veterinary attention, and neighbor-friendly environment. Here, “exotic” means a less-common companion animal—not a recommendation to keep a wild animal.
How to judge whether an exotic pet fits an apartment
Apartment suitability is about the animal’s needs and your building’s constraints, not simply its size. Before comparing species, check these factors in order:
- Permission and legality: Confirm approval from your landlord or property manager, then check the rules for your exact species, address, and jurisdiction. The CDC’s guidance on choosing a pet notes that some small mammals may not be allowed in rental homes and some are illegal in certain states. Permits or other paperwork may also apply.
- Usable habitat: Measure space for the adult animal’s complete enclosure, not just the area available for a small starter habitat. Account for behaviors such as climbing, burrowing, basking, and exercise.
- Noise and activity: Consider when the animal is active, how much it vocalizes, and how close neighbors are. Birds differ by species; large parrots, in particular, can be loud and demanding.
- Social needs and time: Find out whether the species should live alone or with others, and how much daily interaction, cleaning, and enrichment it needs. Some social animals can suffer if kept alone.
- Environmental control and ongoing cost: Some reptiles need carefully managed heating and lighting. These are welfare requirements, not optional settings to reduce an electricity bill. Include habitat, food, cleaning, enrichment, and veterinary care in your budget.
- Veterinary access and lifespan: Locate an experienced exotic-animal veterinarian before acquiring a pet, including one available for emergencies. Plan for the animal’s full lifespan and the care it may need as it ages.
- Origin and welfare: Ask where the animal came from and whether it was captive bred. Consider a reputable rescue or species-specific group; never take a wild animal from nature or release a pet outdoors.
The WWF Exotic Pet Suitability Guide includes all 12 animals below in its low-risk assessed list, but describes risk as dependent on the animal and keeper’s situation. That assessment does not establish that a species is easy to care for, legal where you live, or right for every apartment.
12 apartment candidates, with the needs to investigate
These are a shortlist for further evaluation, not a ranking or a guarantee of apartment suitability. For every candidate, confirm species-specific housing, social, diet, enrichment, and veterinary requirements before deciding.

Why reptiles are not automatically low-maintenance
Reptiles can require specialized enclosures, heating, lighting, food, and veterinary care. The right equipment depends on the species and enclosure, so a generic purchase list is not a substitute for a care plan. If a species needs UVB, a reptile UVB lighting kit may be one part of its setup; confirm the exact requirements with a knowledgeable veterinarian or other qualified source.
RSPCA Australia says reptiles are not “low maintenance” or “easy to care for.” Its setup estimate of AUD $500–$1,000 or more is jurisdiction- and date-sensitive, not a current global average; ongoing costs are additional. Do not choose an animal whose required heating or lighting you would need to reduce to manage household bills.
Make the decision before you bring an animal home
- Get written property approval for the exact species and confirm any building restrictions.
- Check current local and state rules for ownership, permits, and paperwork; do not assume a species assessment settles legality.
- Confirm the adult habitat will fit and that you can maintain its environmental conditions in the space available.
- Match the animal’s social, activity, and sound needs to your schedule, household, and neighbors.
- Find an experienced veterinarian and check routine and emergency availability before acquisition.
- Verify the animal’s origin with a reputable rescue, breeder, or seller who can explain its needs. Never release an unwanted pet into the wild.
For further guidance, see the RSPCA’s advice on choosing small mammals, its reptile care guidance, and the American Animal Hospital Association’s Caring for exotic pets resource, published August 31, 2026. The ASPCA opposes keeping wild animals or animals taken from the wild; choosing an unusual companion species does not make wild capture or release appropriate.
