NBC Select says its staff tested 11 recovery shoes from nine brands for more than a month. The results offer useful comparisons, but “recovery shoe” describes a comfort-focused design—not a proven way to speed tissue healing. The right pair depends on how it fits, how securely it holds your foot, and whether you prefer a soft slide or a more covered, stable-feeling style.

What recovery shoes can—and can’t—do

Recovery shoes include slides, sandals, clogs, and mules designed to feel cushioned or supportive after exercise or long periods on your feet. That can make them a comfort option, but it is not evidence that they accelerate recovery inside the body. Sports medicine physician Sean Bryan told TIME, “I’m not aware of any clear scientific evidence that proves that recovery shoes actually speed recovery at a cellular level or a tissue level.” TIME reports that evidence beyond footwear-company-funded research is limited; some people may nevertheless feel less foot pain, fatigue, tightness, or soreness after high foot stress.

Comfort does not make a shoe suitable for every activity. TIME says many recovery styles are not designed for long bouts of walking and some may feel unstable. Bryan cautions against treating them as permission to stand, walk, or run more than usual, and says prolonged wear could put abnormal stress on soft tissues. Consider them for appropriate periods of lower-demand wear, not a substitute for rest or a reason to extend strenuous activity. Sally Crawford, a biomechanical expert whose research was commissioned by OOFOS, told TIME, “Compared to other shoes, recovery shoes are giving your feet a break.” The commissioning context matters when weighing that comment.

How NBC Select tested the 11 pairs

NBC Select’s Zoe Malin reports that staff wore 11 pairs from nine brands for more than a month. According to the October 2, 2026 guide, brands supplied courtesy samples. Its criteria, informed by podiatrists, included contoured insoles, deep heel cups, balanced cushioning, outsole traction, water resistance, and whether a shoe had the APMA Seal of Acceptance. The picks below are NBC Select’s editorial judgments and reported impressions, not universal rankings or results from independent testing for this article.

#1 Best Overall

Compare the 11 recovery shoes

Open slides and sandals are generally easy to put on and allow more airflow; covered clogs and mules add upper coverage and may feel more secure. But fit, grip, and stability depend on the individual shoe and wearer. Use the distinctions below to narrow the options, then check current sizing, stock, and price on the retailer listing: those details can change.

Model and form Reported feel and useful trade-offs Fit or other notes
Oofos OOahh Slide — open slide Flexible strap, textured insole, and arch cradle; NBC Select lists water resistance and the APMA Seal. No half sizes, according to the guide.
Oofos OOriginal Sandal — flip-flop NBC Select testers described a comfortable, bouncy feel with gentle arch support; the guide lists the APMA Seal. Toe-post construction may not suit everyone.
Hoka Ora Recovery Slide 3 — open slide NBC Select’s cushioning pick. Compare its firmer feel and rocker-like shape with softer slides; Prevention’s author found it firmer and more stable than the Oofos OOahh during that author’s own year of use. That comparison reflects one author’s experience, not a universal fit result.
Kane Revive — covered clog Perforated upper, traction, and firmer cushioning; NBC Select testers described it as sturdy and secure. No half sizes; the guide advises wide-footed shoppers to size up.
Kane Revive OB — open-back mule Covered toe and easy slip-on access; NBC Select testers found it less secure than the closed Revive. Choose it for convenience only if the open back feels secure on your foot.
Crocs Mellow Recovery Slide — open slide NBC Select testers described a soft-but-supportive feel and a flatter outsole. Check the current listing for sizing and availability.
Nike ReactX Rejuven8 — covered clog NBC Select testers described it as secure, cushioned, and grippy. The tester recommended wearing socks and sizing up to make room for them.
Vionic Rejuvenate Recovery Sandal — adjustable sandal Adjustable strap and deep heel cup; NBC Select reports an APMA Seal. The tall platform may be a poor fit for people concerned about balance.
Kuru Moment Recovery Slide — adjustable slide Built-in orthotic and adjustable strap. Testers found it useful to change into after wearing heels; that is a comfort impression, not a treatment claim. Adjustability can help tune the hold, but fit remains personal.
FitFlop Relieff Recovery Slides — open slides Semi-flexible, firmer construction with notable arch support; NBC Select reports an APMA Seal. The guide says the toe area is narrower.
Nobull Recharge Slide — open slide Testers described a flatter outsole, textured insole, and grounded feel. One tester reported warmth and rubbing beneath the strap and preferred socks.

Choose by the way you’ll wear them

If you want easy-on comfort and airflow

Start with an open slide or sandal, such as the OOahh, OOriginal, Ora Recovery Slide 3, Crocs Mellow, Vionic, Kuru, FitFlop, or Nobull. Check whether an adjustable strap or toe post suits your foot, and whether the upper rubs or lets your foot shift. A soft feel is not the same as a secure fit.

If you want more coverage or a held-in feel

Consider the Kane Revive or Nike ReactX Rejuven8. The Kane’s closed upper was described by NBC Select testers as sturdy and secure; the Nike was reported as secure and grippy. The Kane Revive OB is easier to slip on but was reported as less secure than the closed Revive. Covered uppers can also feel warmer than open styles, especially with socks.

If you prefer firmer support to a plush feel

Compare the Hoka Ora Recovery Slide 3, Kane Revive, and FitFlop Relieff with softer-feeling options such as the Crocs Mellow. The Hoka’s firmer, more stable feel relative to the OOahh is also described by Prevention, based on its author’s experience. These descriptions are starting points, not a substitute for checking how the shoe feels under your own foot.

If balance or a secure stride is a concern

Be cautious with tall platforms and open-back designs. NBC Select specifically notes the Vionic sandal’s tall platform may not suit people with balance concerns, and its testers found the Kane Revive OB less secure than the closed clog. Try a shoe indoors first and stop wearing it if your foot slides, the strap rubs, or you feel unsteady.

Check fit before relying on a pair

  • Confirm whether the model comes in half sizes and read its model-specific fit notes; the OOahh and Kane Revive have no half sizes in NBC Select’s guide.
  • If you have wide feet, the guide advises sizing up in the Kane Revive. For the Nike ReactX Rejuven8, the tester suggested sizing up to accommodate socks.
  • Check whether an adjustable strap can hold your foot without pressure or rubbing. One Nobull tester reported warmth and strap friction, while the FitFlop guide notes a narrower toe area.
  • Pay attention to how the outsole feels on the surfaces where you will use it. The guide assessed traction, but the individual impressions do not establish that every model is stable for long walks.
  • Verify current model listing, size availability, and price before buying; retailer inventory and discounts change.

Verdict

NBC Select’s month-long guide is best used as a comparison of reported comfort, construction, and fit trade-offs—not proof that recovery shoes speed healing or a universal ranking. Choose the shape and level of coverage that feels secure, and use the shoe for comfort without extending activity or walking beyond what you otherwise would.
