Affinity is the biggest update for Photoshop alternatives in 2026: Canva says its combined photo-editing, vector-design and page-layout app is free. For other needs, GIMP is a general-purpose free and open-source editor, Photopea is a browser-based option to evaluate for PSD work, and Krita is built for painting and illustration. These tools do different jobs, so the right choice depends on your workflow—not on whether an app is labeled a Photoshop replacement.

This guide covers the 11 named candidates that can be responsibly assessed from available product information. It does not present all 11 as verified, fully free Photoshop substitutes: current tiers, platform support and file behavior are not established equally for every option.

How to choose a Photoshop alternative

Start with the task you need to complete. Photoshop combines several kinds of work, but a painting program, a RAW developer and a template-led graphics tool are not interchangeable with a general photo editor.

  • Photo editing: Look first at Affinity, GIMP or Photopea, depending on whether you prefer an installed app or a browser workflow.
  • Painting and illustration: Krita is the clearest fit in this group; its project describes it as a professional painting program.
  • PSD files: Photopea and Affinity are candidates to test with your own documents. PSD support does not guarantee that every effect, layer or round-trip export will behave exactly as it does in Photoshop.
  • RAW development: darktable and RawTherapee are candidates to investigate for that specialized workflow, rather than assumed replacements for Photoshop’s full range.
  • Quick graphics or mobile editing: Canva, Adobe Express and Snapseed appeared as candidates for these kinds of tasks, but their current free terms and exact fit are not established here.

Before moving a project, check the app’s current platform availability and free-tier requirements, then test it with a copy of a representative file. Check the layers, masks, text, effects and export that matter to your work.

The Photoshop alternatives

1. Affinity by Canva — broad creative work

Canva announced an all-new Affinity app combining photo editing, vector design and page-layout tools, and said the app is free. The announcement also described PSD support. That makes Affinity a strong broad-workflow candidate if you want several creative disciplines in one installed app.

Canva’s statement that Affinity is “completely free, forever” is the company’s claim. Canva AI Studio features—including Generative Fill, Expand & Edit and Remove Background—are tied to Canva premium accounts, so free access to the core app should not be confused with free access to those AI features. At announcement, Canva described Mac and Windows availability and iPad as “coming soon”; check the live product page for current platform availability. Treat PSD support as a reason to test your files, not a promise of perfect Photoshop compatibility.

2. GIMP — general-purpose editing without a paid license

GIMP is a free, open-source image editor and a plausible option for general-purpose work. It is not presented here as a one-for-one Photoshop clone, and the comparison information characterizes its learning curve as a consideration. Check GIMP’s official site for current releases, features and downloads, and test any formats or workflows you depend on before switching.

3. Photopea — editing in a browser

Photopea is an online photo editor and a candidate when you need to edit in a browser rather than install a desktop application. It is also worth evaluating for PSD work. Open a copy of your actual file and check whether the elements you need remain editable; no claim that every Photoshop document or feature behaves identically is established.

  • Enhance your pics with eGects, text, graphics, and animation, and amp up the action in your videos with eGects, transitions, expressive text, motion titles, music, animations, and color grading presets.

4. Krita — painting and illustration

Krita is a professional free, open-source painting program. Its project lists brush types, layers, drawing assistants, stabilizers and animation tools, making it a more natural shortlist choice for drawing and painting than for photo retouching. A graphics tablet is optional, not a prerequisite for using the software. Krita announced releases 5.3.4 and 6.0.4 on September 15, 2026; consult the project for current downloads and platform details.

5. Pixlr — quick online editing to investigate

Pixlr is an online editing candidate. Current free-plan boundaries, account requirements and export restrictions are not established here, so check those terms on Pixlr’s official site before relying on it as a fully free workflow.

6. Paint.NET — a Windows-focused candidate

Paint.NET is worth considering for a Windows-focused shortlist. The available product information does not establish its current feature set or detailed file compatibility, so consult the official site and confirm that it handles the edits and formats you need before choosing it over a broader editor.

7. darktable — investigate for RAW workflows

darktable is a candidate to investigate when your main need is RAW development. Its current capabilities were not established in detail here; check the official project information to confirm that its tools suit your camera files and processing workflow. It should not be assumed to cover every Photoshop task.

8. Canva — template-led graphics

Canva appeared as a candidate for template-led graphic work, a different job from detailed photo editing. The current free-feature boundaries and exact fit for your project are not established here. Check Canva’s current product terms for the specific tools and exports you plan to use.

9. Adobe Express — template-led creative work

Adobe Express appeared among candidates for template-led graphics. Its current free plan, platform details and suitability for your particular task are not established here, so verify the product’s current terms rather than assuming it is a free Photoshop substitute.

10. Snapseed — a mobile-focused possibility

Snapseed appeared as a mobile-focused editing possibility. The available information does not establish its current features, platform availability or fit for desktop work. Check the current product listing for your device and confirm it supports the edits you need.

11. RawTherapee — investigate for RAW development

RawTherapee appeared as another candidate to investigate for RAW development. Its current feature set and exact fit were not established here. Consult its official product information and test a sample from your camera before making it part of a regular workflow.

What to test before replacing Photoshop

  1. Choose a representative file. Use a copy of a project that includes the elements you rely on, such as layers, masks, text or effects.
  2. Try the complete workflow. Open or import the file, make a typical edit, save it in the format you need, then reopen the result.
  3. Inspect the output. Compare the elements important to you and confirm the export meets your needs. Do not infer complete compatibility from the ability to open a PSD.
  4. Confirm the practical terms. Check current operating-system support, account requirements, free-tier limits and any premium or AI features you expect to use.

Can this be a definitive list of 12 free replacements?

The available product evidence names 11 candidates, not a verified set of 12 equally suitable, currently free Photoshop alternatives. It also does not establish current plan terms or capabilities for every candidate. For that reason, this guide does not invent a twelfth product or claim that every entry is fully free. The strongest supported starting points are Affinity for broad creative work, GIMP for general-purpose editing, Photopea for browser-based editing and PSD evaluation, and Krita for painting; assess the remaining candidates against the narrower jobs described above.
