The 11 Best Website Monitoring Tools To Ensure Continuous Uptime in 2026 depend on your monitoring depth: UptimeRobot is the strongest affordable choice for basic checks, Better Stack adds incident response, Checkly suits developer-owned API and browser tests, and Datadog, New Relic, or Dynatrace fit teams already using full-stack observability.
“Continuous uptime” is an outcome, not a feature. A monitoring service periodically checks your website, API, infrastructure, or user workflow and alerts someone when a failure is detected; it cannot prevent downtime without reliable engineering, redundancy, testing, and incident response.
Key takeaways
- UptimeRobot is the best fit-based choice for affordable, straightforward uptime monitoring, while StatusCake is stronger when SSL, domain, page-speed, and agency reporting checks matter.
- Better Stack combines monitoring with incident management, diagnostics, on-call workflows, and status pages instead of treating alerting as a separate system.
- Checkly is designed for developers who need API, browser, and Playwright checks maintained as code; browser-check costs depend on executed runs.
- Pingdom is better suited to synthetic transactions and real-user experience data than to the cheapest possible homepage check.
- Datadog, New Relic, Site24x7, and Dynatrace are broader observability choices, not direct low-cost substitutes for a basic uptime service.
Quick comparison of the 11 best website monitoring tools
The ranking below is a fit-based editorial evaluation, not the result of undisclosed hands-on testing or a universal performance benchmark. What is website monitoring?
Website monitoring checks whether a website or related service is available, responding correctly, performing acceptably, and completing important user actions. The simplest check requests a URL; more advanced monitoring validates content, certificates, APIs, browser workflows, infrastructure, and the experience of real visitors.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Monitoring type | What it checks | What it can miss |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP/HTTPS | Whether an endpoint responds with an acceptable status code | Broken JavaScript, login, checkout, content, or database writes |
| Keyword/content | Whether expected text appears or disappears | Complex interactions and visual defects |
| Ping, TCP, and port | Network reachability or whether a service port accepts connections | Application correctness |
| DNS | DNS resolution and record changes | Whether the application behind the record works |
| SSL/TLS | Certificate validity, trust, hostname, protocol, and expiration | Application availability and functionality |
| Domain expiration | Whether registration is approaching expiration | Other renewal or registrar failures |
| Heartbeat | Whether a scheduled job, backup, or cron task sent its expected signal | What happened inside the job |
| API | Status, headers, response body, JSON fields, authentication, and assertions | Rendered page behavior unless explicitly tested |
| Browser or transaction | Whether a real or scripted browser can complete login, search, registration, cart, or checkout | Some backend or infrastructure causes without diagnostics |
| Page speed and RUM | Lab performance or what actual visitors experience | Complete synthetic business workflows unless separately configured |
| Observability | Relationships among availability, servers, applications, logs, metrics, traces, and deployments | External user experience unless synthetics or RUM are enabled |
A website can return HTTP 200 while its login system, search, shopping cart, payment flow, or database is broken. Revenue-critical websites should pair a basic URL check with at least one content, API, or transaction check.
How should uptime be measured?
Useful uptime measurement depends on check interval, monitoring geography, failure confirmation, alert delay, and the independence of the monitoring infrastructure—not on interval length alone.
- Check interval: Five-minute checks are adequate for many brochure sites; one-minute, 30-second, or 15-second checks reduce detection delay but may cost more and create more noise.
- Locations: Checks from multiple regions help distinguish a global outage from a local ISP, CDN, WAF, routing, or DNS problem.
- Confirmation: Retries and multi-location confirmation reduce false positives caused by transient network errors.
- Notification delay: Time-to-detect is different from time-to-notify. An alert is not useful if it reaches nobody who can respond.
- Maintenance windows: Planned deployments and infrastructure work should suppress expected alerts without hiding unrelated failures.
- Independence: External monitoring should not run in the same host, network, cloud account, or region as the application.
UptimeRobot’s official plan comparison illustrates the trade-off: its free plan uses five-minute intervals, while paid tiers advertise 60-second, 30-second, and 15-second intervals depending on plan. The same comparison lists location-specific monitoring across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia on paid plans.

A 30-second check is not automatically better than a carefully configured one-minute check. If a fast check produces false alarms, has no retry policy, or routes alerts only to an unattended inbox, the shorter interval may reduce operational reliability rather than improve it.
What is the difference between uptime and synthetic monitoring?
Uptime monitoring asks whether a URL or service is reachable, while synthetic monitoring runs a scripted test that imitates a user or client and validates the result.
- Uptime monitoring: Requests a URL, host, port, or endpoint and evaluates reachability and response conditions.
- API monitoring: Tests application behavior without necessarily rendering a page, including authentication, JSON fields, headers, and status assertions.
- Browser monitoring: Runs a browser and JavaScript to test navigation, forms, dynamic content, and authenticated workflows.
- Transaction monitoring: Tests a business journey such as registration, login, search, cart, or checkout.
Checkly’s official pricing information is particularly relevant to developer teams because Checkly supports API checks, browser checks, and Playwright suites, with billing centered on executed check runs. A long-running or frequently scheduled Playwright suite can therefore consume more usage than a simple HTTP check.
Better Stack’s official uptime product page describes Playwright transaction monitoring using a real Chrome browser and JavaScript runtime alongside website, API, SSL, domain, DNS, mail, and network monitoring.
Which website monitoring tool is best for each type of reader?
| Reader or business | Priorities | Best starting shortlist |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer, blogger, or brochure site | Low cost, simple alerts, SSL and domain-expiration checks, minimal setup | UptimeRobot or StatusCake |
| Agency | Client separation, many monitors, reports, permissions, status pages, custom domains | StatusCake, Uptime.com, Better Stack, or Site24x7 |
| Ecommerce site | Checkout, login, search, cart, regional checks, screenshots, fast escalation | Pingdom, Better Stack, Checkly, or Uptrends |
| SaaS or API team | Authenticated API assertions, secrets, Playwright, Git, deployment integration, logs and traces | Checkly, Better Stack, Datadog, or New Relic |
| Large engineering organization | APM, logs, metrics, traces, synthetics, SSO, RBAC, retention, service ownership | Datadog, New Relic, Dynatrace, or Site24x7 |
1. UptimeRobot: best overall for straightforward uptime monitoring
UptimeRobot is the strongest general recommendation for readers who want affordable, straightforward external monitoring without adopting a full observability platform.
UptimeRobot covers HTTP(S), ping, port, keyword, API, UDP, DNS, SSL, domain-expiration, and heartbeat monitoring. The official website-monitoring overview documents the broad basic-monitoring focus, while the official pricing page lists a free plan with 50 monitors and five-minute checks.
The commercial snapshot observed August 16, 2026 showed annual-billing displays from $12 per month for Solo, $33 per month for Team, and $69 per month for Scale. Treat those figures as price signals, not permanent quotes: billing period, currency, tax, included features, and usage limits matter.
Paid plans add shorter intervals, regional checks, status pages, integrations, API monitoring, and richer incident features. The main weaknesses are the free tier’s five-minute interval and limited depth for complex browser journeys, distributed tracing, and root-cause analysis.
Recommended Free Tools
Verdict: Choose UptimeRobot for a personal site, small business, startup, or simple API where the main question is “Is this endpoint responding?” Do not choose it as the only layer for a complex application whose checkout or backend can fail while the homepage remains available.
2. Better Stack: best for monitoring plus incident response
Better Stack is the best fit when detecting an outage and coordinating the response should happen in one operational workflow.
Better Stack combines uptime, API, heartbeat, SSL, domain, DNS, mail, and network monitoring with status pages and incident-management capabilities. Its product page also highlights screenshots, error logs, traceroute or MTR diagnostics, on-call functionality, and Playwright transaction checks.
Rank #2
- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
The free offer displayed on the official product page included 10 monitors, 10 heartbeats, one status page, and three-minute checks. Paid pricing should be verified on the current billing flow because Better Stack combines monitoring and incident-management components.
Better Stack can be more platform than a hobbyist needs, and team or on-call costs may materially exceed a basic URL monitor. Teams with mature PagerDuty or incident tooling may prefer a focused monitoring service rather than duplicating response workflows.
Verdict: Choose Better Stack when alerts need escalation, incident timelines, diagnostics, status pages, and active on-call ownership—not merely an email saying that a homepage failed.
3. StatusCake: best for small businesses and agencies
StatusCake is a strong choice for small businesses and agencies that want uptime checks alongside SSL, domain, page-speed, server, and reporting features.
StatusCake’s official pricing comparison shows a free plan with 10 uptime monitors, five-minute checks, one page-speed monitor, one domain monitor, and one SSL monitor. The same page displays Superior at $20.41 per month and Business at $66.66 per month under annual billing, observed August 16, 2026.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPaid tiers add one-minute or 30-second uptime intervals, more domain and SSL monitors, page-speed monitors, team features, and reporting. Those capabilities are useful for agencies producing website-health reports, but they are unnecessary if the only requirement is a lightweight endpoint check.
Verdict: Choose StatusCake when website maintenance includes certificates, domain renewals, performance, and client-facing reporting. Choose a developer-oriented platform instead when checks must be versioned and maintained as code.
4. Pingdom: best for established synthetic and digital-experience monitoring
Pingdom is best for established businesses, ecommerce teams, and digital-experience owners that need synthetic monitoring and real-user experience data.
Pingdom supports uptime, page-speed, transaction, and real-user monitoring. Its synthetic-monitoring documentation describes journeys such as registration, login, search, shopping cart, and checkout, plus monitoring locations and status-page capabilities.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Pingdom uses a configurable subscription calculator rather than one universal starting price. The official pricing page indicates that costs depend on uptime checks, page-speed or transaction checks, SMS, and RUM usage. The page also advertises a trial containing Synthetics and RUM; a trial is not the same as a permanent free plan.
Pingdom can become expensive as transaction checks, page views, SMS, and alert volume grow. Pingdom is less developer-native than tools centered on Playwright or test-as-code workflows, and Pingdom is not intended to replace trace-level debugging across a distributed system.
Verdict: Choose Pingdom when business stakeholders need visibility into synthetic journeys and what real visitors experience, especially for ecommerce and marketing websites.
5. Checkly: best for developer-owned synthetic monitoring
Checkly is the best fit for developers who want API and browser monitoring expressed as code and integrated with software-development workflows.
Checkly supports API checks, browser checks, Playwright check suites, assertions, and status pages. The model is more expressive than a no-code homepage monitor, making it appropriate for authenticated workflows and application-specific validations.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Checkly’s official pricing page makes executed check runs central to billing. Frequent checks and long-running Playwright suites can therefore affect cost differently from five-minute HTTP monitoring.
Checkly requires development expertise, particularly for browser-test maintenance, authentication, secrets, selectors, and cleanup. A nontechnical site owner who only wants an email when a homepage fails may spend more time maintaining the monitor than the problem warrants.
Verdict: Choose Checkly for API contracts, browser workflows, deployment checks, and Playwright tests owned by a development team.
6. Site24x7: best all-in-one option for websites and IT operations
Site24x7 is the best all-in-one choice when website monitoring needs to sit beside servers, networks, applications, cloud services, synthetic transactions, and real-user monitoring.
The Site24x7 website-monitoring page positions the service around website availability and performance, while its synthetic-monitoring material covers broader synthetic-monitoring use cases.
The benefit is platform consolidation: one vendor may cover the website, infrastructure, applications, and user experience. The cost is configuration and licensing complexity, and a single-site owner may buy far more capability than necessary.
Verdict: Choose Site24x7 when website uptime is one part of a wider IT-monitoring requirement. Compare it carefully with an organization’s existing Datadog, New Relic, or Dynatrace deployment.

Uptime.com is a dedicated monitoring option for teams that have outgrown basic checks but do not need a complete observability suite.
Uptime.com is relevant to agencies and operational teams that value uptime, performance, reporting, and status-page capabilities. The available research did not surface a sufficiently detailed current official feature matrix or price list, so monitor counts, intervals, integrations, and costs should be verified on Uptime.com’s official site before publication or purchase.
Verdict: Evaluate Uptime.com when reporting and dedicated monitoring are more important than developer-owned test code, but confirm current packaging directly.
8. Uptrends: best for broad external monitoring coverage
Uptrends is worth evaluating when an organization needs several kinds of external checks, including uptime, performance, transactions, APIs, and servers.

Datadog’s breadth can also encourage overbuying when a small website only needs availability, SSL, and domain-expiration alerts.
Verdict: Start with Datadog synthetics when Datadog already owns the incident context. Do not select Datadog solely because it has more features than a focused uptime service.
10. New Relic: best for synthetics connected to APM
New Relic is best for teams that already use New Relic application monitoring and want synthetic checks correlated with application telemetry.
New Relic is primarily an observability platform rather than a basic website-monitoring service. Its consumption-based model makes a simple monthly comparison difficult. The New Relic pricing data sheet describes synthetic monitoring as usage-based, including an additional per-check charge beyond the included allowance.

11. Dynatrace: best for enterprise digital experience and observability
Dynatrace is intended for complex enterprises that need broad automated observability and digital-experience monitoring across many applications, services, and teams.
Dynatrace can be appropriate when external user experience must be correlated with internal service dependencies, but enterprise pricing, implementation, governance, and scope require careful planning. The available research did not provide enough current first-party detail to state exact synthetic-monitoring limits or prices, so verify those details on Dynatrace’s official site.
Verdict: Select Dynatrace as part of an enterprise observability strategy, not as a default uptime monitor for a small website.
What alerting and incident-response features should you compare?
The best alert is actionable: it reaches the right owner, includes enough evidence to diagnose the problem, and escalates when nobody responds.
| Capability | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Multiple channels | Email, SMS, voice, push, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Discord, webhooks, PagerDuty, and Opsgenie support different response environments. |
| Escalation policies | Alerts move to another responder when the first responder does not acknowledge them. |
| Grouping and deduplication | One incident does not become dozens of repeated notifications. |
| Maintenance suppression | Planned work does not generate avoidable alerts while unrelated failures remain visible. |
| Diagnostics | Screenshots, response bodies, timing breakdowns, logs, traceroutes, or MTR data shorten investigation time. |
| Status pages | Public or private pages communicate service state without every customer contacting support. |
| Governance | Roles, SSO, audit logs, retention, and compliance controls matter as teams and customer obligations grow. |
Better Stack’s product positioning is differentiated by combining monitoring with incident management, status pages, screenshots, error logs, diagnostics, and on-call workflows. UptimeRobot’s plan comparison includes status pages, incident details, maintenance windows, integrations, and SSL/domain alerts, with advanced availability depending on plan.
How much should website monitoring cost?
Website monitoring costs range from a permanent free tier to usage-based enterprise observability. The appropriate budget depends on monitor count, interval, locations, browser execution, RUM page views, users, hosts, retention, and whether incident management is included.
| Product | Observed price signal | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| UptimeRobot | Free; annual displays from $12/month Solo, $33/month Team, and $69/month Scale | Observed August 16, 2026; paid features and interval vary by plan |
| StatusCake | Free; Superior $20.41/month and Business $66.66/month | Observed August 16, 2026 under annual billing |
| Better Stack | Free offer with 10 monitors, 10 heartbeats, one status page, three-minute checks | Paid pricing should be verified because monitoring and incident management are combined |
| Pingdom | Configurable calculator and trial | Cost depends on checks, transactions, SMS, and RUM |
| Checkly | Usage-based | Executed API, browser, and Playwright runs drive the model |
| Datadog | Usage-based synthetic billing | API and browser test types have different billing considerations |
Do not compare a free five-minute HTTP monitor directly with a one-minute browser transaction, a RUM product priced by page views, or an observability platform priced across hosts and telemetry. Price the actual monitoring design you need, including overages, annual billing, tax, seats, SMS, and test execution.
How do you choose the right monitoring stack?
Choose the smallest stack that detects the failures your business actually cannot tolerate.

How do you configure a reliable website monitoring setup?
- Monitor from infrastructure outside the hosting environment and failure domain.
- Start with the primary URL and one critical workflow rather than creating hundreds of low-value checks.
- Add SSL-certificate and domain-expiration monitoring.
- Add a login, core API, or checkout transaction for revenue-critical services.
- Use at least two relevant geographic regions for globally distributed audiences.
- Configure retries, confirmation logic, and maintenance windows.
- Route high-severity alerts to a monitored channel with an escalation policy.
- Write a runbook with an owner, severity, response expectation, and recovery steps for each important alert.
- Test alerts by intentionally breaking a safe endpoint or test transaction.
- Review false positives, missed failures, ownership, and test maintenance monthly.
What can go wrong with website monitoring?
A site can be “up” but unusable
An HTTP 200 response does not prove that JavaScript loaded, login works, search returns results, a cart works, payment succeeds, or a database accepts writes. Add content, API, or browser assertions for critical functions.
A single monitoring region can mislead you
A regional DNS, CDN, WAF, routing, or ISP problem may affect customers while a monitor elsewhere sees a healthy site. Choose monitoring regions that represent actual users.
Browser checks require ownership
Selectors, cookie banners, authentication, CAPTCHA, MFA, payment pages, and navigation can change after legitimate releases. Assign a test owner and review browser checks after major deployments.
Monitoring can create production side effects
Frequent API or browser checks can add load, trigger rate limits, create test orders, poll paid APIs, distort analytics, or activate fraud controls. Use test accounts, safe payment methods, cleanup routines, staging where possible, and an identifiable user agent.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
SSL and domain checks are not application checks
SSL monitoring can find expiration, trust-chain, hostname, and protocol problems, but a valid certificate does not prove that the application works. Domain-expiration reminders also should not be the only renewal control.
Public status pages can disclose too much
A public status page may reveal internal service names, deployment timing, dependency failures, or security-sensitive details. Use a private page or redact incident information when appropriate.
Alerts without ownership are not reliability
Every important alert needs a named owner, severity, escalation path, runbook, maintenance handling, expected response time, and post-incident review process.
What should you monitor besides the homepage?
A minimum viable setup for an important website includes the following seven checks:
- The homepage or primary URL.
- The login endpoint or core API.
- One critical business transaction, such as checkout or registration.
- The SSL certificate.
- Domain expiration.
- DNS record or nameserver health when DNS is business-critical.
- A heartbeat for scheduled jobs, backups, or cron tasks.
Expand monitoring only when each added check has an owner, a useful alert, and a response procedure. A single robust checkout test can be more valuable than hundreds of simple homepage monitors.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best website monitoring tool in 2026?
UptimeRobot is the best fit for affordable, straightforward uptime monitoring, while Better Stack is better when incident response and on-call workflows are required. Checkly is stronger for developer-owned API and browser checks, and Datadog, New Relic, or Dynatrace are better when synthetics must connect to full-stack observability.
Is a free uptime monitor enough for a website?
A free uptime monitor is often enough for a personal or brochure website if five-minute detection and basic alerts are acceptable. A revenue-critical website usually needs faster or multi-region checks, SSL and domain monitoring, and at least one API or transaction check.
How often should a website be checked?
A five-minute interval is adequate for many low-risk websites, while one-minute or faster checks may suit revenue-critical services. A shorter interval is not automatically better if it creates false positives, excessive cost, or alerts that nobody actively handles.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can uptime monitoring detect a broken checkout?
A basic HTTP uptime check usually cannot detect a broken checkout because an HTTP 200 response can occur while login, JavaScript, payment, or database writes fail. Use a browser or transaction monitor with assertions for checkout and other critical workflows.
Can website monitoring prevent downtime?
Website monitoring cannot prevent downtime by itself; monitoring detects and reports failures. Prevention requires engineering measures such as redundancy, capacity planning, testing, safe deployments, backups, and a practiced incident-response process.
The Bottom Line
For most small websites, start with UptimeRobot or StatusCake and add SSL, domain, and one critical workflow check. Choose Better Stack when alerting must become incident response, Checkly when developers need API and Playwright tests as code, Pingdom when RUM and digital experience matter, and Datadog, New Relic, Site24x7, or Dynatrace only when broader observability justifies the extra scope and cost.
