The best social media monitoring tool depends on what you need to track and what your team will do with the results. For a social inbox and publishing workflow, compare Hootsuite, Sprout Social, and Agorapulse. For broader coverage across social and other media, investigate Meltwater, Talkwalker, and Brand24. For sales routing, automation, or a leaner budget, look at HubSpot, Statusbrew, Awario, and Zoho Social—but verify which monitoring features are included in the plan you would buy.

This is a shortlist, not an independently tested ranking. The products below are drawn from vendor-published comparisons, so treat their positioning and prices as leads to verify, not proof of universal quality or current plan value.

What social media monitoring tools do

Monitoring software tracks chosen terms—such as a brand, product, competitor, hashtag, or topic—and brings matching posts and conversations together for review and response. Social listening goes further by analyzing themes, sentiment, and changes over time. The distinction is not absolute: platforms often combine monitoring, analytics, and listening features. Hootsuite explains the difference in its social media monitoring comparison and social listening comparison.

These tools can help track competitors when their public activity is available to the service, but coverage varies by platform, source, language, and plan. No advertised source list guarantees that every relevant conversation will appear.

How to choose a monitoring tool

  • Coverage: Check the networks your team uses and whether you need news, blogs, forums, reviews, video, or podcasts as well.
  • Speed and alerts: Find out how quickly new mentions appear and whether alerts can reach the people responsible for responding.
  • Analysis: Assess whether sentiment labels and trend summaries make sense for your languages, slang, and subject matter. Automated sentiment is a prioritization aid, not ground truth.
  • Workflow: Decide whether monitoring alone is enough or you also need publishing, inbox management, collaboration, reporting, or CRM integrations.
  • History: Confirm how far back searches reach and how long data remains available; a short lookback can rule out a tool for historical analysis.
  • Cost and scale: Check whether pricing changes with seats, profiles, data volume, add-ons, contract length, or billing period. Compare equivalent plans rather than headline starting prices.

Hootsuite’s published comparisons also call out platform coverage, alert speed, sentiment, integrations, reporting, pricing transparency, scalability, and historical access. Those are useful questions to ask vendors, not independent measurements of their products.

10 tools to investigate

1. Meltwater: social and broader media monitoring

Meltwater is positioned for mid-market and enterprise communications teams that need social monitoring alongside broader media coverage. Its comparison describes social networks and other media sources, with custom packages. That combination may suit teams coordinating communications across channels, but the published positioning does not establish a particular package’s coverage or price. Meltwater’s comparison is vendor-published.

2. Sprout Social: monitoring within a team workflow

Sprout Social is presented as a fit for teams that want monitoring alongside publishing and collaboration. The cited features include a Smart Inbox, trend reports, and AI-assisted search. Meltwater’s 2026 comparison lists Standard at $199, Professional at $299, and Advanced at $399 per user per month, with Enterprise priced by custom quote. These are figures from that comparison, not verified checkout prices; confirm the billing basis, included monitoring features, and current pricing with Sprout Social.

3. Hootsuite: monitoring alongside scheduling and analytics

Hootsuite’s July 2026 listening comparison describes Perch as combining listening with scheduling and analytics. It says Quick Search on standard plans can monitor up to two custom keywords over the preceding seven days. That stated limit matters if you need deeper historical research or more concurrent terms, and should be checked against current product documentation. Meltwater’s 2026 comparison lists Hootsuite at $99 per month; treat that as a dated, publisher-reported figure, not a confirmed quote.

4. Brand24: broad online mention discovery

Brand24’s own 2026 comparison describes monitoring across social media, news, blogs, video, forums, podcasts, reviews, and other online sources, with sentiment and influence measures. The article is vendor-published and its author discloses working for Brand24, so use it for product information rather than independent evaluation. Pricing snapshots conflict: Hootsuite’s comparison gives $199 per month, while Brand24’s article says pricing was last verified in May 2026 and puts its entry point at about $149 per month. Confirm the current plan, billing period, and included sources directly with Brand24. Brand24’s comparison has the vendor’s description.

5. Agorapulse: agency-oriented social management

Meltwater’s comparison positions Agorapulse for smaller and mid-sized agencies, citing influencer outreach and CRM as part of its stated fit. The exact monitoring features and plan limits need confirmation with the vendor. Meltwater lists $79 per month in its 2026 summary table; this is not a verified live price or a statement of which plan includes which monitoring capabilities.

6. Talkwalker: global reputation listening

Meltwater presents Talkwalker as a custom-priced option for global brands managing reputation across markets. Hootsuite’s listening comparison describes Lumen by Talkwalker as a multilingual, large-scale listening product. Verify the product name, ownership, available features, language and market coverage, and package boundaries with the vendor before evaluating it for a specific team. The comparisons do not establish a public price.

7. HubSpot: routing mentions toward sales

Meltwater’s comparison positions HubSpot for ecommerce and B2B teams that want to route mentions into sales. It lists a free plan and paid seats from $20 per month, but that is a vendor-comparison snapshot, not confirmation that the relevant monitoring function is included in every HubSpot product or tier. Check the exact product, seat requirements, and monitoring capability before treating HubSpot as a monitoring option.

8. Statusbrew: automated response workflows

Statusbrew is positioned by Meltwater for teams scaling automated response workflows. The comparison lists a $69 monthly starting price. Confirm what monitoring, automation, and data limits apply to the entry plan; a starting price alone does not show whether it fits your workflow.

9. Awario: a lean-team tracking option

Meltwater describes Awario as an option for lean teams and lists $29 per month. Check which sources it monitors, its data limits, and the applicable billing period with the vendor before comparing that figure with tools priced per seat or with broader media coverage.

10. Zoho Social: a budget candidate to verify

Meltwater positions Zoho Social as a budget option, listing a free plan and business pricing from $10 per month. That comparison does not establish whether the listed tier provides the monitoring functions you need. Confirm the plan’s source coverage and feature limits directly with Zoho Social.

Make a shortlist that matches the job

  • Social inbox and publishing: Start with Hootsuite, Sprout Social, or Agorapulse, then compare the monitoring sources and workflow features in the specific plans you would use.
  • Social plus non-social media: Investigate Meltwater, Talkwalker, and Brand24, verifying the relevant source types, languages, and historical access.
  • Sales or response workflows: Assess HubSpot for mention-to-sales routing and Statusbrew for automation, but confirm that the required capabilities are in the proposed tier.
  • Smaller-team or budget exploration: Compare Awario and Zoho Social alongside other candidates, with special attention to data limits and what their entry plans actually monitor.

Other names in Meltwater’s 2026 candidate pool may suit more specialized needs: X Pro for X-focused monitoring, Buffer Analyze for lightweight reporting, BuzzSumo for content and media monitoring, and Emplifi or Synthesio for broader enterprise suites. These are adjacent or specialized alternatives, not necessarily full substitutes for a general-purpose monitoring platform. Meltwater’s candidate list supplies those options.

What to verify before committing

  1. Write down your must-cover sources. Include each social platform and any important news, blog, forum, review, video, or podcast sources.
  2. Test the terms that matter. Use representative brand, product, competitor, and topic queries; check how the tool handles language, slang, and irrelevant matches.
  3. Ask about latency and alerting. Confirm how quickly mentions appear and how alerts reach the team that owns response.
  4. Set a history requirement. Specify the lookback period and retention you need, then compare it with the plan’s actual limits.
  5. Map the workflow. Identify whether people need to assign, respond, publish, report, collaborate, or route mentions into a CRM.
  6. Compare complete costs. Ask for the applicable seats, profiles, data allowances, add-ons, contract terms, and billing period—not just a starting price.

Vendor comparisons can help identify candidates, but they do not substitute for checking current product documentation and plan details. The cited 2026 comparisons are vendor-published, and their product descriptions, rankings, and pricing should be read with that commercial context in mind.
