Built In San Francisco’s roundup names 10 companies spanning chip design, semiconductor IP, timing components, sensors, manufacturing equipment and adjacent solar technology. It is best read as a company overview—not a verified ranking or a list of firms all headquartered in Silicon Valley. Built In gives Arm’s location as Cambridgeshire, England, while the other entries are associated with Bay Area cities.

What this list does—and does not—show

Built In’s page, updated September 11, 2026, presents a broad roundup of semiconductor-related employers and companies. It does not explain what qualifies a company for “Silicon Valley,” whether a listed company must be headquartered there, or how the entries were selected or ranked. It provides no scoring method, market-share comparison or revenue analysis, so “top” should not be taken as an objective order of performance or size. Read Built In’s roundup.

The full article contains 10 entries, although its short preview shows only seven. The profiles range beyond chipmakers: they include intellectual property, components, manufacturing equipment, RFID and solar technology. The descriptions and locations below reflect Built In’s account, not an independent technical or corporate audit.

The 10 companies, grouped by role

Compute platforms and processor design

  • Arm — Cambridgeshire, England, as listed by Built In. The company develops processor architecture and related products for areas including data centers, autonomous machines, smartphones, PCs, wearables and AI computing. Its official site also describes platform products, software and developer resources, licensing, training and partner programs. That breadth makes Arm relevant to the semiconductor ecosystem, but does not make it a Silicon Valley-headquartered company or validate its placement in a “top” ranking. Arm’s official site.
  • SiFive — San Mateo. Built In describes SiFive as a provider of customizable CPU and semiconductor IP design products. Its listing situates the company in processor design and reusable IP rather than chip fabrication. Built In’s SiFive profile.
  • Intel Corp — Santa Clara. Built In’s description covers computer hardware including processors, chipsets, memory, storage and power solutions. This is the list’s broadest entry in terms of the hardware categories mentioned.

Semiconductor IP, memory and timing

  • Rambus — Sunnyvale. Built In characterizes Rambus as a semiconductor IP company focused on speed, security and memory capabilities. This places it in the design-enabling IP portion of the value chain rather than among equipment makers.
  • SiTime — Santa Clara. The roundup identifies SiTime with MEMS timing technology, including oscillators and resonators. Timing components support the coordination of electronic systems, a different role from general-purpose processors.

Wireless connectivity, sensing and identification

  • GCT Semiconductor — San Jose. Built In describes system-on-chip products that combine radio-frequency, baseband modem and digital signal processing functions for wireless connectivity use cases.
  • Crocus Technology — Santa Clara. The company is described as making magnetic sensors and embedded memory.
  • Alien Technology — San Jose. Built In lists RFID devices and related readers, antennas, tags and labels, extending the roundup from semiconductor components into identification systems. Built In’s Alien Technology profile.

Manufacturing equipment and adjacent technology

  • Applied Materials — Santa Clara. Built In describes materials engineering and equipment used in semiconductor and display production. Its role is manufacturing infrastructure, not simply chip design. Built In’s Applied Materials profile.
  • Solaria Corporation — Fremont. The roundup describes Solaria as a solar-panel technology company. Solar technology is adjacent to the semiconductor landscape rather than a conventional chip-design category. Built In’s Solaria profile.

How to use the list if you are looking for employers

Start with the work you want to do, not the order of the names. The roundup’s descriptions point to different parts of the industry:

Geography and ranking: the important caveats

The roundup does not define “Silicon Valley” or state a consistent location rule. It gives nine entries Bay Area cities and Arm a location in Cambridgeshire, England. That mix means the title should not be read as a strict roster of Silicon Valley-headquartered companies. The entries also cover different kinds of businesses, making a single ranking difficult to interpret without criteria the page does not supply.
