Microsoft Edge is not inherently unsafe or universally slow. I simply prefer a browser with less Microsoft integration, fewer built-in prompts, and a different approach to personalization. These ten reasons explain that choice; the final section covers the practical reason someone might reasonably stay with Edge.

Why I don’t use Microsoft Edge

1. The interface can feel too busy

Edge combines a configurable new-tab page with side panels, shopping and productivity features, account prompts, and Copilot access. Those features are useful to some people, but I prefer a browser whose primary screen and menus stay quieter. Microsoft documents the available layout and page controls in its Edge overview.

2. I don’t want my browser tied to Microsoft services

Signing in enables synchronization, but it also links browser data and settings to a Microsoft account and can connect Edge with Windows features. Microsoft provides a separate control for sharing browsing data with Windows, so this is a preference about integration rather than a claim that synchronization is unsafe. The relevant options are described in Microsoft’s browsing-data and privacy guidance.

3. Optional diagnostic data is more collection than I need

Edge includes an optional diagnostic-data setting. Its location and availability can depend on the Windows version, region, or organizational management. A privacy-minimizing user may reasonably leave it off and choose a browser whose defaults and controls feel more comfortable. Microsoft explains the setting and those dependencies in its privacy documentation.

4. Address-bar suggestions transmit what I type to a search provider

When search suggestions are enabled, characters typed in the address bar are sent to the default search provider to generate suggestions. This is configurable, and it does not mean every keystroke is always sent to Microsoft; the destination is whichever provider is selected. I keep this feature off when possible, as described by Microsoft in its address-bar privacy guidance.

5. I would rather not use browsing activity for personalization

Microsoft documents a control that stops browsing history from being used to personalize Edge and services such as search, shopping, and news. I prefer not to build that profile in the first place. The setting and its scope are outlined in Microsoft’s Edge privacy whitepaper.

6. Copilot can add more context than I want to share

Depending on the prompt, Microsoft says Copilot may use the query, recent conversation history, and browsing context—including the current page, its title, open tabs, and browser history. Edge offers a setting to prevent that context use, but I prefer a browser where an AI assistant is not so closely embedded in ordinary browsing. See Microsoft’s Copilot in Edge guidance.

7. InPrivate is easy to mistake for anonymity

InPrivate removes specified local browsing data after all InPrivate windows close. It does not make you anonymous, add protection from malicious websites, or provide extra ad blocking. Microsoft also notes that extensions may still save history and that an organization can disable InPrivate. The limitations are listed in Microsoft’s InPrivate documentation and its browsing-data explanation.

8. Strict tracking prevention can break websites

Edge offers Basic, Balanced, and Strict tracking-prevention levels. Strict blocks more known trackers, but Microsoft warns that some sites may behave unexpectedly. That is a genuine trade-off: stronger blocking can require adding an exception or switching to Balanced for a particular site. Details are in Microsoft’s tracking-prevention guide.

9. Sleeping Tabs are a mechanism, not a speed guarantee

Sleeping Tabs can pause inactive-page script timers, reduce CPU use, and release memory for other tabs or applications. Microsoft describes the mechanism as: “Freezing pauses a tab’s script timers, which minimizes CPU usage and frees up the operating system to reuse the memory for other open tabs, new tabs, or system applications.” That does not establish that Edge will be faster than another browser on every device or workload. See Microsoft’s performance-features documentation.

10. Another browser may fit my workflow better

Browser choice is also about interface, extension workflow, account ecosystem, and privacy controls. A different browser can be the better match without Edge being objectively bad. Any serious comparison should use the same current versions and device, then examine defaults, sync requirements, built-in features, extension support, and a disclosed workload; the available documentation does not establish a universal winner.

The one reason I might use Edge

Convenience in a Microsoft-centered setup

Edge is compelling when you want favorites, passwords, history, and settings synchronized across devices through a Microsoft account. It also includes reading and accessibility tools, supports extensions (including extensions from other stores), and integrates closely with Windows. Microsoft describes these capabilities in its Edge update overview and Edge feature guide.

What to check before switching

  • Decide whether you need Microsoft-account synchronization across devices.
  • Review address-bar suggestions, optional diagnostics, personalization, Windows history sharing, and Copilot context settings.
  • Choose a tracking-prevention level that does not disrupt sites you rely on.
  • Export or migrate favorites, passwords, and extensions before making another browser your default.

The Bottom Line

I avoid Edge because its integration, personalization options, AI context, and feature density do not match my preferences—not because the browser is proven universally unsafe or slow. For users invested in Microsoft services, its synchronization and built-in tools may outweigh those concerns.
