TorrentFreak’s list of the 10 most popular torrent-site domains at the beginning of 2024 is a historical popularity ranking—not a guarantee that any domain works today, a safety review, or an endorsement. The article did not establish current reachability, and torrent sites can change or disappear. No site below is verified as “100% working.”
What the 2024 ranking does—and does not—tell you
TorrentFreak’s ranking is based on traffic reports and covers individual domains described as globally available and English-language. It does not combine proxy or alternative domains, and it is not a comprehensive worldwide directory. TorrentFreak excluded other sites with substantial traffic, including Rutracker.org, Yggtorrent.qa, Etoland.co.kr, and Zamunda.net, because they did not fit that scope.
Most importantly, popularity is not evidence of safety, lawful content, uptime, or authentic uploads. TorrentFreak explicitly says it does not recommend or endorse these sites and warns that some have linked to malicious ads. Their positions below represent the list at the start of 2024 only.

The rank tells you only where each domain appeared in that historical traffic-based list. It does not establish whether a site remains online, whether a particular file is trustworthy, or whether downloading or sharing it is lawful. TorrentFreak’s article: Top 10 Most Popular Torrent Sites of 2024.

Is it legal or safe to download from torrent sites?
BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file-sharing method; the protocol itself is distinct from the legal status of the content being shared. You need the rightsholder’s permission or another applicable legal basis to share a work. Laws and exceptions vary by jurisdiction, and a site’s place in a popularity list does not tell you whether a specific download is authorized.
For readers in the United States, the Copyright Office says Section 1201 of the DMCA generally prohibits circumventing technological measures that control access to copyrighted works, while providing limited, temporary exemptions for specified noninfringing uses. This is a summary of one U.S. legal provision, not a complete account of copyright law or advice for other countries: U.S. Copyright Office: Section 1201 Rulemaking.

Safety is a separate concern. TorrentFreak warns that some sites in its list have linked to malicious ads. A popularity rank does not verify a download, and this list is not a security assessment. BitTorrent’s own support page says antivirus products may classify its client as a potentially unwanted program because its installer can include optional third-party offers; that is the vendor’s explanation, not an independent malware audit. BitTorrent advises users to download the official client and reject unwanted offers: BitTorrent support: Why is my antivirus identifying BitTorrent or µTorrent as a virus?.
Why Tor is not a torrent privacy workaround
The Tor Project advises against using torrent clients over Tor: most clients may disclose a user’s real IP address to peers, and torrent traffic burdens volunteer exit relays. Tor should not be treated as a way to make torrent activity anonymous. See the project’s guidance: Can I use Tor with Torrent?.

Where to find lawful torrents
For a legitimate use of BitTorrent, start with official software-distribution torrents or material that is genuinely public domain or openly licensed. A community-maintained directory from Torrust lists torrents for Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Slackware, along with public-domain and openly licensed collections that include Internet Archive material and Project Gutenberg ebooks. It is a community directory, so entries and availability may change; check the license and source of each item before downloading or redistributing it: Torrust torrent directory.
BitTorrent’s support page also encourages users to download the official version of its client from its websites: BitTorrent support guidance.

What the traffic figure for TorrentGalaxy means
The Office of the United States Trade Representative’s 2025 Review of Notorious Markets reports that Torrent Galaxy received over 320 million visits since August 2023, attributing the figure to reports. It is a reported figure, not an independently audited traffic measurement, and it does not prove that the site is safe or currently accessible: USTR 2025 Review of Notorious Markets.
