Military robots are taking on specific battlefield tasks, from hauling equipment and scouting to inspecting explosive hazards. They are not replacing soldiers wholesale: the ten systems below range from fielded equipment to experiments and research platforms, and each still depends on people for mission decisions, oversight, or specialized work.
What “replacing humans” means in military robotics
The more accurate description is task transfer: a robot may carry some of a soldier’s load, gather information from a risky area, or let an explosive-ordnance specialist work from a safer distance. That is different from replacing a soldier or a unit. The U.S. Army’s account of its human-machine integration work says, “Machines will not replace humans, but the right combination of humans and machines can optimize formations.” Its phrase “No blood for first contact” describes the goal of putting machines in harm’s way first—not autonomous combat or independent decision-making. U.S. Army: human-machine integration and experimentation
“Robot” also covers different control arrangements. Some systems are remotely operated; others can follow waypoints or perform a defined autonomous route. The examples below are not interchangeable, and official demonstrations or announced fielding milestones do not by themselves establish battlefield effectiveness, reduced casualties, or widespread adoption.
Ten military robots and what they actually do
1. Small Multi-Purpose Equipment Transport (S-MET)
Task: Carry equipment and payloads that would otherwise add to infantry soldiers’ loads. The U.S. Army describes S-MET as a program-of-record transport platform adapted with an autonomy kit and additional payloads. In an August 2024 experiment, four S-METs operated autonomously: one carried a remotely operated weapon station, while three carried tethered unmanned aircraft for direction finding and full-motion video. The Army bulletin says this experimental equipment was not organic to the unit. This was an experiment in added sensing and direct-fire support, not evidence that an S-MET can replace an infantry squad. 2. ORIGIN
Task: Carry modular mission payloads on an uplifted S-MET. The Army describes ORIGIN as experimental, not a program-of-record robotic vehicle. Possible payloads include a remotely operated weapon station, 360-degree reconnaissance camera, smoke-screening module, tethered surveillance aircraft with an EO/IR camera, or loitering-munition launcher. These are potential configurations, not a claim that every payload is fielded or used together. U.S. Army: human-machine integration and experimentation
3. Medium-Range Reconnaissance (MRR) UAS surrogate
Task: Company-level intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. In the Army’s EXFOR account, this was a teleoperated or waypoint-enabled aircraft surrogate loaned by Anduril while companies competed for the requirement. It demonstrates an approach to reconnaissance experimentation, not a final procurement decision or autonomous targeting capability. U.S. Army: human-machine integration and experimentation

4. Ghost-X unmanned aircraft
Task: Small-aircraft support in Army human-machine integration experiments. Soldiers used Ghost-X during Project Convergence Capstone 4 in March 2024. That establishes experimental use at the event; it does not establish subsequent fleet-wide fielding. U.S. Army: Project Convergence Capstone 4 reporting

Task: Ground reconnaissance, situational awareness, and sensor carriage. Army reporting describes a mid-sized, agile Ghost robotic dog supporting reconnaissance and situational awareness at Project Convergence. Separate Army reporting describes a quadruped equipped with chemical and CBRN sensors in a simulated research and training setting. These are distinct examples, and neither establishes routine operational combat deployment. - Accurate surface details
- Includes GTD-21 surveillance drone with cart
- Decals with authentic U.S. Air Force markings
- Molded in black and clear. Paint and glue required(not included).
6. CBRN Sensor Integration on Robotic Platforms (CSIRP)
Task: Put chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear sensors on robots that can enter dangerous environments. The joint initiative initially adapted existing explosive-ordnance-disposal robots and later expanded to unmanned aircraft. The intended benefit is to reduce the need to send personnel into hazardous areas in extensive protective equipment; it is not a claim that robots independently assess or manage every CBRN threat. CSIRP team leader Timothy Krakowski told the Army, “The robot kind of mitigates the problems of sending a person into high-risk situations.” U.S. Army: robotic platforms and CBRN sensor integration U.S. Army: CSIRP reporting
7. SIRKO-S1
Task: Ground transport and other support roles in difficult conditions. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence describes SIRKO-S1 as one of the first ground transport robotic platforms codified and deployed within the military. The ministry lists cargo transport, mine-laying, demining, and reconnaissance among its roles. Its announcement does not provide a comparative performance assessment or total deployment count. 8. Micro Tactical Ground Robot (MTGR)
Task: Inspect and help neutralize explosive hazards, as well as support reconnaissance and surveillance. Marine Corps Systems Command reported initial fielding with III MEF in Hawaii during the last week of January 2025, alongside training and integration. That is a specific fielding milestone, not evidence that the robot is in use across every Marine unit. Marine Corps Systems Command: MTGR fielding

Task: Support explosive-ordnance disposal in emergency situations. In May 2024, the UK Ministry of Defence announced T4 robots for the British Army and described the system as a smaller rapid-response EOD robot. It can take some direct exposure away from specialists where used, but the announcement does not suggest that it replaces their judgment or expertise. UK Ministry of Defence: T4 EOD robots

10. RACER Robotic Haulage Platform (RHP)
Task: Test autonomous off-road mobility over military-relevant terrain. DARPA reports that the RHP, based on a Textron M5, drove autonomously for over 30 miles in route-following mode during an experiment. That is a demonstrated experimental distance, not a combat range or operational fielding claim. DARPA: RACER Robotic Haulage Platform

The useful comparison is what task a system takes on and how mature the evidence is—not a ranking of which robot is “best.” The available reports do not provide a common performance dataset for comparing range, reliability, communications needs, operator workload, or mission effectiveness.
| System | Reported task | Evidence maturity described |
|---|---|---|
| S-MET | Equipment transport; experimental sensing and weapon-station payloads | Army program of record; additional roles tested in an August 2024 experiment |
| ORIGIN | Modular payload carriage | Army-described experiment; not a program-of-record robotic vehicle |
| MRR UAS surrogate | Company-level ISR | Loaned surrogate used while companies competed for a requirement |
| Ghost-X | Small unmanned aircraft support | Used in Project Convergence Capstone 4 experimentation in March 2024 |
| Quadruped platforms | Reconnaissance, situational awareness, or sensor carriage | Exercise, simulation, research, and training examples; no routine combat deployment established |
| CSIRP | Remote CBRN sensing | Joint initiative adapting robotic platforms; no single platform-wide fielding claim in the cited account |
| SIRKO-S1 | Transport, mine-laying, demining, reconnaissance | Roles and deployment described by Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence |
| MTGR | Explosive-hazard work, reconnaissance, surveillance | Initial fielding with III MEF reported in January 2025 |
| T4 | Bomb disposal and rapid response | Announced for the British Army in May 2024 |
| RACER RHP | Autonomous off-road mobility trials | DARPA development and experimentation platform |
These reports illustrate different kinds of exposure reduction: carrying loads, scouting, collecting hazard data, and approaching suspected explosives. They do not establish how many soldiers or battlefield jobs have been replaced. The examples also reflect a source base weighted toward U.S. Army and Marine Corps programs, with selected Ukrainian, British, and DARPA cases—not a comprehensive global inventory.
