Some luxury cars do lose more than 60% of their value over five years, but the evidence does not establish that every car in the popular ten-vehicle list crossed that mark. A 2026 U.S. study by iSeeCars found five-year average depreciation above 60% for the Range Rover, Tesla Model S, Tesla Model X, and BMW 7 Series. Those results are a separate benchmark—not proof of the full list—and they describe averages, not the resale value of any individual car.
What “lost 60%” means in this comparison
Depreciation depends on the starting value, the vehicle’s age, and how resale value is measured. The comparable figures here come from iSeeCars’ 2026 five-year study: it analyzed more than 950,000 five-year-old used cars sold in the United States from March 2025 through February 2026, adjusted original MSRPs for inflation to 2026 dollars, and compared them with average used asking prices. The study reported average five-year depreciation of 41.8% across vehicles.
That is a five-year average—not a claim that the cars plunged by 60% immediately after purchase. Asking prices also are not necessarily final transaction prices. Trim, mileage, condition, market, and the specific sale can produce a different result.

A September 25, 2026 Gadget Review article lists these vehicles in this order. Its ranking is an editorial list; it does not provide a consistent, model-by-model valuation table showing that each one lost at least 60% under the same sample, geography, and time period.

iSeeCars’ 2026 study independently reports five-year depreciation above 60% for four models that overlap with the ten-car list, and provides useful context from two additional vehicles:

The Infiniti QX80 and BMW 7 Series are included as study comparisons, not as additions to Gadget Review’s ten-car list. The iSeeCars results do not establish a matching five-year percentage for the other six vehicles in that list.

What to check before buying a heavily depreciated luxury car
A low resale price does not establish that a vehicle is inexpensive to own. The purchase price is only one part of the decision; condition, warranty coverage, repair exposure, and service access matter too.
- Identify the exact car: Compare model year, trim, mileage, condition, and asking price with genuinely similar vehicles. Study averages are not an appraisal for a particular car.
- For an EV, check battery condition and warranty: Ask for available battery-health information and confirm the remaining coverage for that specific vehicle. Do not assume the model’s reputation establishes the condition of an individual battery.
- Check warranty and service availability: Confirm applicable coverage and whether qualified service is accessible where you live. The Gadget Review article flags post-warranty costs and service concerns, but does not establish a repair bill for any specific model.
- Arrange a qualified pre-purchase inspection: Gadget Review specifically recommends a thorough inspection for a used Jaguar F-Pace. For any used luxury car, an inspection is a way to assess that vehicle—not a guarantee against future faults.
A diagnostic code scan can add information, but it is only one aid and cannot replace a professional inspection.

How to interpret the study’s trend
iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer interpreted the recent decline in five-year depreciation rates this way: “This recent reduction in 5-year depreciation rates suggests rising used car demand and/or insufficient supply over the past 12 months,” he said. That statement is his interpretation of the study’s recent trend; it does not predict what any one model will be worth next.
The study’s results apply to its U.S. sample and method. They are not guaranteed resale outcomes, current asking prices, or a vehicle-level forecast for a different country, trim, mileage, or condition.
