iPhone Spotlight Search can do more than open apps: it can find supported messages, emails and photos, surface quick actions, and search the web. Open it by swiping down on the Home Screen; on some iPhones, you can also tap the Search button or field. Results update as you type, but what appears depends on your iOS version, settings, region, and whether an app supports Spotlight.
Open Search and launch apps faster
1. Open Spotlight from the screen you’re on
Swipe down on the Home Screen or Lock Screen to bring up Search. Depending on your iPhone and iOS version, you may also be able to tap the Search button on a Face ID model or the Search field at the bottom of the Home Screen. Apple says that Home Screen field is available in iOS 16 and later. Start typing: results update as you enter text.

2. Check an app’s Top Hit for a shortcut
Search for an app by name, then look at its Top Hit for a suggested shortcut. For example, Apple gives a Photos shortcut to Favorites as a possible result. Tap the shortcut when it matches what you want to do; the available action depends on the app and context.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFind personal information and photos
3. Search messages, email, notes, and contacts
Try a distinctive name, phrase, or subject to find indexed content in supported apps. Apple documents queries such as “emails from [Name]”; you can also search for a contact and start a call, message, or FaceTime call from a result when that action is offered. Results depend on the app’s Spotlight support, its search settings, and whether its content has synced.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
4. Find photos by subject, place, or text
Search for a person, object, date, or location to try to find matching images in your photo library. Apple also says Spotlight can search text recognized in photos using Live Text. For example, search for a phrase visible in a photographed sign or document. Recognition and results are not guaranteed for every image or query.
Use Search to do something right away
5. Try a calculation or conversion
Enter a calculation or a familiar unit or currency conversion directly in Search and see whether a result appears. This behavior is described in Tom’s Guide’s practical iPhone search guide, rather than the Apple pages cited here, so treat it as something to try: supported inputs and currencies may vary.

6. Start a timer, Focus, song search, or Shortcut
Search can offer quick actions such as starting a timer, turning on a Focus, identifying a song with Shazam, or running a Shortcut. Type the action you want, then select the offered result. The options depend on your configuration and what is available in your version of iOS.
7. Toggle a setting from its result
Search for a setting such as Airplane Mode. If Spotlight offers a control in the result, use it to switch the setting without navigating through the Settings app. The controls shown can differ by setting and iOS version.

8. Look for an App Store install action
If you search for a known app that is not installed, an App Store download control may appear in Search. Tom’s Guide describes this as a possible convenience, not a guaranteed result across iPhones. If you do not see an install option, open the App Store and search there.
Choose what Spotlight shows
9. Adjust search and suggestion settings for an app
- Open Settings > Search.
- Choose an app to adjust its available controls.
- Review options such as Show App in Search, Show Content in Search, Show on Home Screen, Suggest App, and Suggest Notifications, then change the ones that fit your preferences.
These controls let you limit an app’s visibility in results or suggestions. Labels and available options may vary with iOS.

10. Reduce web results, recent searches, or location-based suggestions
Search settings include controls for web-related results and recent searches. To manage location-based suggestions, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Suggestions & Search and adjust the option there. Turning off suggestions can make Search less personalized, while leaving them on may show more context-dependent results.

When a result is missing
- Check app support: third-party app content appears only if the app supports Spotlight indexing. Apple’s iPhone User Guide says, “If something you’re looking for doesn’t appear, the app may not support Spotlight search.”
- Check Search settings: in Settings > Search, confirm that the app and its content are allowed to appear.
- Check syncing: content that has not synced may not yet be available to search.
- Check whether the app is hidden: a hidden app or restricted visibility can affect what appears.
- Try a more distinctive query: a specific name or phrase can be easier to match than a broad term.
Spotlight is different from Visual Intelligence
Spotlight starts with typed text and searches apps, supported personal content, and the web. Apple’s iOS 26 feature guide separately describes Visual Intelligence for content currently on the screen: users can highlight an item to search visually, use Google or frequently used third-party apps for visual search, ask ChatGPT about screen content, or identify objects. Those screen-based tools are a related feature, not another Spotlight search method, and availability depends on the device and feature configuration.
