You can watch TV shows online for free legally on ad-supported services, but the catalog, device support and availability vary by country. As of October 4, 2026, the strongest service-specific details confirmed here are for Tubi, The Roku Channel and Plex; several other names often included in free-streaming lists need current confirmation from their official sites before relying on them.
What “free” streaming usually means
Most free TV streaming is supported by advertising, rather than a subscription. Tubi says it shows short ad breaks during movies and TV shows, with advertising paying for content from studio and independent partners. It also says it does not ask for credit card details. Tubi’s explanation of its free service describes Tubi’s model, not every service’s terms.

Check whether a show is actually included at no cost. An app may place free ad-supported titles alongside subscriptions, rentals or other paid content; Prime Video is one example noted in Tom’s Guide’s comparison. A title appearing in the app does not by itself mean it is free.

Live channels work more like scheduled television, while on-demand libraries let you choose an episode and start it when you want. The Roku Channel’s stated 500+ figure is its own current product description, not a comparable count of shows or episodes across services.

- Look for the actual free designation. Confirm the episode is included in the free ad-supported tier, not marked for subscription, rental or purchase.
- Expect ads and review account terms. Ad breaks are part of Tubi’s free model. Account requirements vary by service, so check its official sign-in or help information rather than assuming every service works without registration.
Stay with legitimate services
Use the service’s official website or app, and avoid sites that stream copyrighted shows without authorization. Tubi describes itself as legal and says users do not need a VPN to use its service; that is Tubi’s statement about Tubi, not a general legal assessment of all streaming sites or a reason to use VPN workarounds to evade geographic restrictions.
