The “10 Best Download Manager Software For Windows 10/11 [2022 Edition]” list is a historical roundup, not a current ranking. Fossbytes published it on December 17, 2021, and updated it on January 20, 2022; the list was explicitly unordered. Its ten choices can still help you identify the kind of tool you need, but check each developer’s download page for current Windows support and releases before installing.
What the 2022 list covered
The original Fossbytes roundup named Free Download Manager (FDM), Internet Download Manager (IDM), EagleGet, Ninja Download Manager, BitComet, JDownloader 2, Internet Download Accelerator (IDA), Xtreme Download Manager (XDM), uGet, and aria2. It discussed features such as browser link capture, segmented downloads, batch handling, resuming interrupted transfers, scheduling, bandwidth limits, and download organization. The list was unordered, so it did not establish that one product was better than another. Fossbytes’ 2022-edition roundup.
A later Windows Report comparison, updated January 8, 2024, considered IDM, FDM, JDownloader, Ninja Download Manager, and EagleGet using speed, management features, compatibility, and affordability. Its percentage speed claims are roundup or vendor claims, not results from a controlled, like-for-like performance test. Windows Report’s comparison.
Choose by the job you need done
A download manager is most useful when its specific workflow solves a problem your browser’s built-in downloads do not. The historical list points to several useful distinctions:
#1 Best Overall
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
- Large files and interrupted connections: Look for resume support and segmented or parallel downloads. Whether a transfer can resume also depends on the server and the file; a manager cannot guarantee recovery in every case.
- Many files: Batch handling and organization help when downloading multiple links. Scheduling is useful when you want transfers to start at a particular time.
- Browser-based downloads: Check that the manager supports your browser and whether it needs a separate extension. A desktop installer alone may not enable browser link capture.
- Bandwidth management: A bandwidth limit can keep downloads from consuming all available capacity while you work or stream.
- Torrents: The Fossbytes article also describes FDM and BitComet in torrent-related workflows. Treat that as historical feature information, not confirmation of their current support or status.
- Terminal-based control: aria2 is distinct from the graphical managers in the list: it is a command-line option. That may suit scripted or terminal workflows, but it is a different kind of interface.
What current vendor pages establish
Some official product pages provide current details, while the available evidence does not establish present-day compatibility or maintenance for every name in the 2022 roundup.
| Tool | What the vendor page establishes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Free Download Manager (FDM) | The official page lists FDM 6.35.1 for Windows 11/10 and a 64-bit installer. It says browser extensions are required for best browser integration. The page also lists macOS, Android, and Linux versions. FDM downloads. | Confirm the version and installer details on the page before downloading; install the relevant extension if you want browser integration. |
| Internet Download Manager (IDM) | The official download page offers registration for a 30-day trial and provides extension installation instructions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. It does not establish current pricing. IDM downloads. | Check the vendor’s current licensing terms and install the extension for your browser. |
| JDownloader 2 | The official site describes JDownloader as a free, open-source download manager and lists start, stop, and pause controls, bandwidth limitation, archive extraction, and a Windows installer. Its download page was last modified April 23, 2025; that date does not establish the latest application version. JDownloader downloads. | Use the vendor’s Windows download route and check the page for current release details. |
| Xtreme Download Manager (XDM) | The official site describes browser integration, resume, scheduling, speed limiting, and video conversion. Its download table labels versions 8.0.29 and 8.0.26 as beta, and 7.2.11 as stable. XDM. | Check the release labels on the vendor page and select a version according to your tolerance for beta software. Advertised speed gains are not independent test results. |
| Internet Download Accelerator (IDA) | The 2022 Fossbytes article links to an official download page, but current product details are not established here. IDA downloads. | Verify current Windows support, version, and features with the vendor before installing. |
| BitComet | The 2022 Fossbytes article links to BitComet’s official site; the available information does not establish its current version or Windows compatibility. BitComet downloads. | Check the vendor’s current download information and confirm that the product fits your intended workflow. |
For EagleGet, Ninja Download Manager, uGet, and aria2, the available details do not establish current compatibility, pricing, release maintenance, or distribution status. The historical roundup can identify them as options to investigate, but it is not enough to confirm they remain suitable for a current Windows installation.

Install browser integration separately when needed
Browser capture may require an extension in addition to the desktop manager. FDM’s official page says extensions are required for best browser integration; IDM’s page provides installation steps for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Before relying on automatic capture, confirm that your browser and its current version are supported, install the official extension, and test with a non-critical download.

Do not treat speed claims as a guarantee
Download managers may use segmented transfers or multiple connections, but that does not mean they will always outperform a browser on your connection. Actual throughput depends on factors such as the server, network, and whether the server permits the transfer method. The speed statements in the Windows Report comparison and XDM’s vendor page are not controlled comparative measurements. Choose on workflow features you can verify—such as browser integration, resume, batch tools, and bandwidth controls—rather than a promotional speed percentage.

How to evaluate a candidate before installing
- Start at the developer’s official download page. Confirm that it offers a Windows build and check the stated Windows versions and architecture.
- Check the release information. Distinguish stable releases from beta builds where the page labels them, and do not assume a page’s last-modified date is the application’s release date.
- Review the features you will use. Look specifically for resume, scheduling, batch downloads, bandwidth limits, and browser integration rather than relying on a broad “best” label.
- Check browser-extension requirements. Install extensions only from the vendor’s stated route or the browser’s official extension store, and verify they support your browser.
- Confirm current licensing and distribution details. Pricing and availability are not established for every product in the historical list; consult the relevant vendor before committing.
Which option should you shortlist?
For a Windows 11/10 option with current support stated on its official page, FDM lists a Windows 11/10 build. For a free, open-source manager with a Windows installer and controls such as pausing and bandwidth limitation, JDownloader is described that way on its official site. IDM’s vendor page confirms a 30-day trial route and browser-extension instructions, but not current pricing. XDM lists a stable release alongside beta releases, so check the labels before choosing. For the other names in the 2022 roundup, verify current support and availability directly rather than treating their inclusion as an endorsement.
