Dinosaurs lived in Antarctica when parts of the continent had warmer, forested environments. The fossil record includes an Early Jurassic predator and herbivore, several Late Cretaceous dinosaurs from the Antarctic Peninsula and nearby islands, and a sauropod vertebra formally recognized in a 2026 study. The ten entries below include named species and genera as well as fossils that have not been formally named; they are not all equally well known.
Why Antarctica’s dinosaur record is fragmentary
Modern Antarctica is covered in ice, but its rocks preserve traces of ancient land environments. Ice cover and difficult field conditions limit how much fossil-bearing rock is exposed and collected, so the known dinosaur record is sparse. Some finds can be assigned to named dinosaurs; others are partial bones or skeletons that have not received a formal scientific name.
Ten Antarctic dinosaurs and fossil groups
| Dinosaur or fossil group | When | Body plan and likely role | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cryolophosaurus ellioti | Early Jurassic | Theropod predator | The Natural History Museum describes it as a carnivore about 8 m long. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County gives a slightly different exhibition figure of 25 feet (about 7.6 m). Its curved nasal crest inspired the common description “frozen crested lizard.” |
| Glacialisaurus hammeri | Early Jurassic | Herbivorous sauropodomorph | The Field Museum identifies it as a sauropodomorph found in Antarctica and summarizes it as a one-ton herbivore. The USGS identifies the Hanson Formation dinosaurs, including this early sauropodomorph, as the only known Early Jurassic dinosaurs from Antarctica. |
| Antarctopelta | Late Cretaceous | Armored ankylosaur; herbivorous body plan | The Natural History Museum’s 2026 synthesis places ankylosaurs such as Antarctopelta on the Antarctic forest floor. The cited description does not establish a body measurement here. |
| Morrosaurus | Late Cretaceous | Small herbivore | The Natural History Museum describes it among the small herbivores in the Antarctic fossil record. No measurement is established in the cited description. |
| Trinisaura | Late Cretaceous | Ornithopod | It is included among the Antarctic ornithopod genera. The cited museum material does not provide a supported measurement or more detailed diet for this entry. |
| Imperobator | Late Cretaceous | Two-legged predator; a predatory paravian, or bird-line dinosaur | The Natural History Museum reports it as an Antarctic predator. Its precise placement has been debated, so a more specific family-level classification is not warranted here. |
| Vegavis | Cretaceous | Avian dinosaur: a bird-line dinosaur | The Natural History Museum describes it as an ancient relative of ducks and geese. It is an avian dinosaur, not a non-avian dinosaur. |
| Unnamed Antarctic titanosaur | Late Cretaceous; about 82 million years ago | Sauropod; a large-bodied herbivore group | A vertebra found in 1985 was formally recognized in a 2026 study. The Natural History Museum estimates the animal at roughly 6–7 m and describes the vertebra as the first dinosaur bone discovered on the Antarctic continent. The fragment is not enough to name a species. |
| Unnamed basal ornithischian | Antarctic find; a date is not stated in the cited Field Museum account | Basal ornithischian | Field Museum researchers collected a small skeleton during the 2010/11 expedition. The cited account does not give it a formal genus and species. |
| Two undescribed sauropodomorph groups | Antarctic fossil record; a more precise date is not stated in the cited museum exhibition material | Sauropodomorphs related to long-necked herbivores | Museum exhibition material describes two recently discovered fossil groups that have not yet been named. They should be treated as unnamed groups, not as formally described species. |
How to read the Antarctic fossil list
The list spans two notably different parts of the record: the Early Jurassic dinosaurs from the Hanson Formation and later Cretaceous dinosaurs reported from the Antarctic Peninsula and nearby islands, alongside finds from the continent itself. The named dinosaurs are not the whole story: several entries are partial or undescribed fossils, and some descriptions support only a broad body plan or ecological role. In particular, the titanosaur estimate comes from a vertebra rather than a complete skeleton, while the unnamed ornithischian and sauropodomorph groups cannot be given species profiles from the cited accounts.
