To reduce digital traces connected to abortion research or care, start with the device and accounts you control, limit what apps can collect, and take steps to keep telehealth conversations private. These measures can reduce exposure; they cannot guarantee anonymity or provide legal protection. Information may remain on a device, in an account, with an app or provider, or in services used by third parties—even after you delete an app.

1. Use a device you control

For sensitive searches, messages, or appointments, use a personal device rather than a work-managed or shared one when feasible. An employer, device administrator, or another person with access to a shared device may be able to monitor or review activity, depending on the device and its settings. A personal device does not make activity invisible to websites, apps, internet providers, or services you use, but it reduces the number of people and administrators who may have direct access to it.

If you must use a shared device, avoid saving passwords or sensitive files, sign out of accounts when finished, and consider whether the device owner can see browsing or account activity. Do not rely on private-browsing mode to erase records from accounts, websites, networks, or monitoring software.

2. Install security updates

Keep your phone, computer, browser, and apps up to date. Install available security updates, and turn on automatic updates where practical. Updates can address known vulnerabilities that might otherwise expose information on a device or account. HHS includes keeping devices current among its telehealth privacy and security recommendations.

3. Lock the screen and secure accounts

Set a screen lock that another person is unlikely to guess, and enable multifactor authentication (MFA) on important accounts when available. Use a different, strong password for each account; a password manager can help you organize unique passwords without reusing them. Secure the email account used for password resets, because access to that inbox can help someone take over other accounts.

Review account recovery options and signed-in devices periodically. If a device or account is shared, remove access only if doing so is safe for your circumstances; an unexpected change may alert someone who monitors it.

4. Review app permissions and privacy defaults

Check whether a health or period-tracking app needs each permission for the feature you use. Location, contacts, photos, microphone, and other access can expose more information than a basic feature requires. Deny permissions that are not necessary, and check the app’s privacy settings for options that limit sharing or keep information private by default.

Permissions and settings vary by operating system and app version. Limiting a permission can disable features, but it can also reduce what the app can collect through that access. The FTC’s mobile health app guidance recommends data minimization and least-privilege access: collect and access only what is needed.

5. Enter less sensitive information

Before recording detailed cycle, pregnancy, appointment, or location information, consider whether the app’s features are worth storing that information there. The FTC’s developer guidance puts the principle plainly: “Remember, if you don’t collect data in the first place, you don’t have to go to the effort of securing it.” That is a data-minimization recommendation, not a guarantee about any particular app.

Precise location data can contribute to re-identification risk, according to FTC guidance. If an app requests location, consider whether the feature you want genuinely needs it and whether your device lets you provide less precise location or deny access.

6. Check retention and deletion before relying on it

Look for the app or provider’s current privacy policy and account controls. Check what information is retained, how long it is kept, whether it is shared or sold, how to request deletion, and what the policy says about legal demands. An app’s deletion process may remove local data or close an account without removing information already shared with the company or third parties.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deleting an app from a phone is not the same as deleting an account or asking a company to delete records. What deletion accomplishes depends on the service’s practices and the information involved. Check directly with the company rather than assuming that removing the app erases copies elsewhere.

7. Make telehealth conversations harder to overhear

Choose a private room for a telehealth call. If you cannot get a private space, headphones can make it harder for nearby people to hear the other side of the conversation; they do not secure stored records or make the call anonymous. Turn off nearby smart speakers and other devices that could respond to or record speech, where practical. HHS recommends these steps to help protect conversations from being overheard.

If the appointment link looks unexpected or suspicious, do not open it until you have confirmed it with the provider through a contact method you already trust.

8. Choose a safer connection and charging setup

For telehealth appointments, avoid public Wi-Fi and public USB charging ports when possible. Use a connection you trust, and use encryption when available. A public charging port can present a different risk from a Wi-Fi network, so treat both the connection and the charging method as part of your appointment setup. HHS specifically advises against public Wi-Fi and public USB charging ports for telehealth.

9. Understand which privacy rules may apply

HIPAA is not a general privacy law for every health-related app. It applies to covered entities and business associates within its scope; an app’s relationship to a healthcare provider and its role in handling information can matter. HHS’s mobile health app resources identify several potentially relevant federal regimes, including the FTC Act, the FTC Health Breach Notification Rule, HIPAA, and other requirements. Which rules apply depends on the service and its circumstances.

In September 2026, the FTC announced that it had rescinded its 2021 policy statement on health app breaches because, in the agency’s view, its 2024 update to the Health Breach Notification Rule made the statement unnecessary. The FTC announcement concerns the policy statement; it does not say that the rule itself was rescinded.

10. Get local help for legal questions

Digital privacy steps are not a substitute for legal advice. Applicable rules and the treatment of records can depend on state law and individual circumstances. For questions about legal exposure or a specific record, seek current advice from a qualified legal professional or a trusted local organization. Do not assume that a particular app, device, or deletion action guarantees a specific legal outcome.

How to compare period-tracking or health apps

There is no app ranking established here. Compare services using their current disclosures and settings rather than assuming that a familiar name or a privacy label settles the question.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Whether account creation is required, and what information is required to use the service.
  • What data and device permissions the app collects or requests, especially precise location.
  • What the policy says about sharing, sale, retention, deletion, and legal demands.
  • Whether encryption and MFA are available, and whether privacy-protective defaults are enabled.

Policies and features can change, so check the current app disclosures before making a choice. A 2024 CHI paper studied privacy concerns and practices around period-tracking apps through vignettes with 183 female participants in the United States, including participants in states where abortion was allowed and banned. That specific sample is not representative of every US user and does not establish an individual person’s likelihood of surveillance or legal consequences.
