The right card payment machine depends on where you sell, which point-of-sale (POS) system you use, and what you’ll pay to process each transaction—not just the reader’s purchase price. Here are 10 options to compare, plus the compatibility and cost checks to make before buying. Product availability, pricing, and fees vary by country; this is a shortlist, not a tested ranking.

This shortlist spans compact readers, handheld terminals, and broader POS systems. Some names refer to a payment device; others describe a POS platform with compatible hardware. Confirm the exact device and service available in your country before purchasing.

Shopify POS
A natural starting point for a business already using Shopify. Shopify-supported readers require Shopify Payments. An external terminal uses a separate processor account, and transaction details may not fully sync to Shopify POS; staff may need to mark orders paid manually. Square
Square offers compact readers and terminal-style hardware, as well as ways to take some payments without a separate reader. Fees differ by payment type and plan; compare the applicable rates in Square’s fee information. Its offline payment feature has conditions: payments must reconnect within 24 hours, some reader generations are not supported, and the merchant bears the risk of a declined or disputed offline payment. A handheld terminal option to consider when you want a device rather than a small reader paired to a phone or tablet. Check which readers are available in your country and whether your existing POS or software supports the specific device. The ten names come from Shopify’s small-business card-reader comparison. It is a vendor-authored shortlist, not an independent test; its listed prices and transaction rates reflect that page’s market and publication context, not guaranteed current quotes.
What published hardware prices can—and can’t—tell you
Oklahoma State University Extension’s 2025 POS comparison lists a Square Reader for contactless and chip at $59, Square Terminal at $299, PayPal Zettle card reader at $29, and PayPal Zettle terminal at $199. These are figures in that fact sheet, not verified current prices for every market or seller. How to choose the right setup
1. Calculate the full cost
Compare the device purchase or rental cost, any monthly software subscription, and processing fees. Check card-present rates separately from keyed or online payments, and look for both a percentage and a per-transaction charge where applicable. Square distinguishes payment types and plans; Clover says its software fees and rates depend on the business. Check Square’s fee information and Clover pricing for their respective terms.

Verify support for chip cards, contactless/NFC, and mobile wallets, plus any PIN-entry and receipt workflow you need. Shopify says its supported readers accept chip, contactless, and mobile-wallet payments where the hardware is available. Check device-specific details in Shopify’s reader guidance.

3. Check region, operating system, and POS compatibility
Confirm the device is sold and supported in your country, works with your phone or tablet, and connects to the processor account and POS software you intend to use. If you use Shopify, check whether the device is Shopify-supported or an external terminal: supported readers require Shopify Payments, while external terminals process separately and may require manual order updates. 4. Choose a form factor for the way you sell
- Compact reader: usually paired with a phone or tablet; consider it for a mobile setup or an existing POS device.
- Handheld terminal: consider it when staff need a standalone device for mobile or tableside checkout.
- Countertop setup: consider it when payments are taken at a fixed checkout point and the hardware needs to stay there.
These are workflow distinctions, not claims about tested device performance. Check the specific product’s documented features and required accessories.
5. Read the offline-payment terms
Do not assume a device can safely accept payments without a connection. Square’s documented offline mode requires reconnection within 24 hours, excludes some reader generations, and leaves the merchant responsible for payments that are later declined or disputed. Review Square’s offline-payment conditions and confirm the relevant policy for any other provider you are considering.
When you may not need a separate reader
Square describes alternatives that include Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android, invoices, payment links, and a virtual terminal. These options depend on the seller’s device, account, country, and payment workflow; they do not automatically replace a dedicated terminal for every checkout situation.
