You can get professional software at no cost through official trials, eligibility-based licenses, early-access builds, freeware, and open-source projects. The safest starting points are the publisher’s own download pages or the official project site—not cracks, key generators, torrents, or repackaged installers. Here are ten useful websites and official download routes, with the kind of free access each offers and what to check before installing.

Which sites offer legal free access, and what kind?

These ten options are not all the same kind of offer. Some provide a temporary trial, some have free plans or eligibility-based licenses, and others distribute software with ongoing open-source licenses. Use the table to choose a route, then check the details for that product or project: free access to a download does not always mean unrestricted use of every edition or feature.

Website or route Type of access What to check
JetBrains product pages Trials and qualifying free-use options Product and eligibility terms
Microsoft Visual Studio offers Free developer downloads and Dev Essentials benefits Which product and benefits apply
Microsoft Software Download Windows installation downloads Edition activation and licensing
Apache Software Foundation Free Apache project releases Choose the official project and release
Apache OpenOffice Office suite installers Release, platform, signatures, and hashes
LibreOffice Free, open-source office suite Official build and license
GIMP Free, open-source image editor Official build and hash
FOSSHub Software discovery directory Follow through to the project’s official page
JetBrains EAP Free, time-limited pre-release builds Build expiration and pre-release stability
Official project download pages Project-specific open-source releases License, release, platform, and verification data

1. JetBrains product pages

JetBrains documents trials for its IDEs as well as free non-commercial use for eligible products and complimentary access for groups such as students, teachers, and open-source maintainers. Its current documentation describes IDE trials of up to 30 days. A trial is temporary; after it ends, commercial features generally require a paid license unless you qualify for a free option. Check the terms for the specific product and your intended use rather than assuming every JetBrains tool has the same offer.

2. Microsoft Visual Studio free developer offers

Microsoft lists Visual Studio Community and Visual Studio Code as free downloads and points users to Dev Essentials benefits. This is a direct publisher route for development tools. Confirm which product you need and review the applicable terms and benefit eligibility; a free download should not be taken to mean that every Microsoft developer product or service is included at no cost.

3. Microsoft Software Download

Microsoft’s Software Download portal provides Windows installation downloads. It is useful when you need installation media from the publisher, but downloading setup files does not itself remove activation or licensing requirements. Check the requirements for the Windows edition you intend to install.

4. Apache Software Foundation

The Apache Software Foundation says its projects provide source code and, where available, binary releases free of charge, and that Apache projects do not charge for downloading or using their software. The foundation’s current page, accessed October 1, 2026, describes more than 210 projects and 23 podlings. Since the foundation hosts many separate projects, select the project’s own release information rather than treating the foundation page as one universal installer.

5. Apache OpenOffice

Start at the Apache OpenOffice official download page, which lists installers, language packs, signatures, and hashes. The page lists Apache OpenOffice 4.1.16, released November 10, 2025; it notes that downloads are hosted through SourceForge. Starting from the official OpenOffice page helps you identify the intended release and its verification information before following the hosting link.

6. LibreOffice

LibreOffice is a free, open-source suite with Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base, and Math. The Document Foundation’s FAQ says to download the official build from libreoffice.org and states that it may be used in business without license fees under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 (MPL 2.0). Its open-source license also allows users to study how the software works and contribute improvements.

7. GIMP

The GIMP project’s official download page provides builds for Windows, macOS, and GNU/Linux, as well as source archives and SHA-256 hashes. The page showed GIMP 3.2.4 as its stable release on April 17, 2026. GIMP’s FAQ explains that its GPLv3-or-later license permits commercial use. For an image-editing option without a purchase price, download from the project page and use its hash information to verify the file when appropriate.

8. FOSSHub

FOSSHub is a software directory, not the publisher of every program it lists. It describes itself as open-source-first, says it links to official projects, labels paid options, and advertises downloads as free of malware and bundles. Treat it as a discovery layer: follow the project link where possible and confirm the release and licensing information on the software publisher’s own site.

9. JetBrains Early Access Program

JetBrains EAP is a separate option from an ordinary product trial. It gives users free access to pre-release builds of JetBrains products; the company says each EAP build is valid for 30 days from its release. These builds are intended for trying upcoming software, not as a guaranteed stable substitute for a released version. Expect possible instability and check the release date so you know when a build will expire.

10. Official project download pages for open-source software

For Apache, LibreOffice, and GIMP projects, the official project site is the most useful authority for confirming the software’s license, supported download options, release information, and available signatures or hashes. A hosting service may deliver the file, but begin with the project’s own page so you can establish which file the project actually recommends. The Apache Foundation, LibreOffice, and GIMP entries above are examples of this route, not three additional software publishers.

How to tell a trial, a free license, and open-source software apart

The word “free” can describe different rights and time limits. Check the license or offer terms for the exact product, edition, and use you have in mind.

  • Trial: Temporary access for evaluation. JetBrains documents trials of up to 30 days for its IDEs. Once a trial ends, continued commercial use may require a paid license unless a separate free option applies.
  • Eligibility-based license or offer: Free access may depend on status or purpose, such as being a student, teacher, or open-source maintainer, or using an eligible product non-commercially. Verification requirements and terms vary.
  • Early access: A pre-release build offered for testing, not the same thing as a stable, ongoing free license. JetBrains EAP builds have a 30-day validity period measured from each build’s release.
  • Freeware: Software made available at no cost under the publisher’s terms. Do not assume that a zero price grants permission to modify, redistribute, or use it in every context.
  • Open source: Software distributed under a license that sets out rights such as using, studying, modifying, or redistributing the code. The precise rights and obligations come from the project’s license, not just the fact that the download costs nothing.

What is the safest way to download free software?

  1. Identify the publisher or project. Search for the software’s official product or project page. Use a directory such as FOSSHub to discover a project, then follow its official link where available.
  2. Confirm the exact product and offer. Check the edition, intended use, eligibility rules, and whether access is a trial, an EAP build, or an ongoing license.
  3. Check the release and platform. Use the publisher’s page to confirm the version and the installer or build for your operating system. For pre-release software, check its release date and stability status.
  4. Use published verification data when available. Some projects publish hashes or signatures alongside downloads. Apache OpenOffice lists signatures and hashes; GIMP publishes SHA-256 hashes. Compare the downloaded file with the project’s instructions rather than relying on a filename alone.
  5. Read the license before relying on the software. This matters especially for commercial work, redistribution, and modification. For example, LibreOffice’s FAQ describes business use without license fees under MPL 2.0, while GIMP’s FAQ explains commercial use under GPLv3-or-later.

Do not treat a crack, key generator, torrent, or “pre-activated” repack as a legal free offer. It is not an official publisher download, and it does not establish a valid license. A legitimate source should let you identify the publisher, the product or project, and the applicable terms.

What are the best free alternatives to Microsoft Office or Photoshop?

LibreOffice is a no-cost, open-source office suite with word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing, database, and formula applications. GIMP is a free, open-source image editor and can be considered when you need image-editing software without buying a commercial product. Neither name alone establishes that every feature, workflow, or file-handling need will match a particular paid application; compare the tools against the work you actually need to do.

Can paid software be free forever?

Sometimes, but there is no general rule. A qualifying license or open-source project may permit continuing use at no charge, while a trial expires, an EAP build is time-limited, and an eligibility-based offer depends on its terms. Check the product’s current official license and offer before relying on free access for ongoing work.
