These ten scenes stand out for what the performances reveal: grief that breaks through restraint, a sudden change in resolve, or a character’s voice turning a declaration into a turning point. “Best” is a subjective judgment, not a consensus ranking. The list considers the Japanese-language original or English dub identified for each scene; it does not treat either language as inherently better. Acting, adaptation, direction, timing, and sound all shape what viewers hear.

How to judge a voice acting moment

A memorable performance is more than a loud cry or a famous line. Listen for how the voice changes across a scene: a pause before a decision, breath tightening under fear, a shift in pace, or a break in composure. Those choices can reveal a character’s inner state in ways the words alone do not.

The selections below are editorial choices based on scenes identified in The Tech Edvocate’s March 6, 2024 list. The source names performers and moments, but does not establish a universal ranking. Where it identifies a language version, that version is specified. For entries where it does not, the language should not be inferred from the performer’s name alone.

10 standout anime voice acting moments

1. Yusuke’s awakening — Yu Yu Hakusho

Performer named: Nozomu Sasaki. Version: the source identifies Sasaki’s performance but does not explicitly state the language version.

#1 Best Overall
ONLY FROM JAPAN The Many Sides of Voice Actor Radio Collectible Anime Figure (Yasumi Utatane)
  • PREMIUM DESIGN: High-quality PVC figure featuring detailed costume elements including a pink and white dress with navy bow accent and matching accessories
  • DYNAMIC POSE: Captured in an energetic standing pose with one leg raised, displaying lively movement and personality
  • DISPLAY READY: Comes with a sturdy white circular base for stable presentation and easy display
  • COLLECTIBLE SCALE: Perfect size for display cases and shelves, crafted with attention to proportions and detail
  • AUTHENTIC STYLING: Features signature outfit design with meticulous attention to colors and costume details including gloves and hair accessories

Yusuke’s awakening after being struck by a car is an unusual kind of showcase: the scene’s emotional force comes from vulnerability rather than a triumphant power-up. Sasaki’s performance is singled out as touching, and the moment invites attention to the change from a character defined by bravado to one whose absence matters to the people around him.

2. Nina’s fate — Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

English dub performers named: Maxey Whitehead as Nina and Vic Mignogna as Edward Elric.

This English-dub scene puts an innocent voice alongside Edward’s horrified response. The contrast makes the tragedy feel immediate: Nina’s presence remains childlike even as Edward struggles to process what has happened. The performance’s impact depends on both sides of the exchange, not only on a single anguished outburst.

3. Goku becomes a Super Saiyan — Dragon Ball Z

Performers named: Masako Nozawa in Japanese and Sean Schemmel in English.

The transformation is familiar as an image, but the voice carries the emotional escalation: grief and anger build into a declaration of power. Nozawa and Schemmel represent different language performances of the same turning point. Comparing them is most useful at the level of pacing and vocal emphasis, rather than treating one as the automatic standard for the other.

4. Asuka fights alone — Neon Genesis Evangelion / The End of Evangelion

Japanese performer named: Yuko Miyamura.

Asuka’s battle and monologue move through anguish, resolve, and breakdown. That range is what makes the sequence linger: the voice can sound forceful without suggesting that the character is emotionally secure. The performance holds confidence and desperation in tension, making the fight feel like a struggle for identity as much as survival.

5. L’s introduction — Death Note

Japanese performer named: Kappei Yamaguchi.

L’s introduction is memorable for its restraint. Rather than announcing menace, the performance gives the character a calm, eerie presence, inviting viewers to notice how unusual he is before the story fully explains him. A quiet delivery can create suspense as effectively as a shout when it leaves the audience unsure what the character is thinking.

6. Okabe Rintarou’s breakdown — Steins;Gate

Japanese performer named: Mamoru Miyano.

Okabe’s eccentricity gives way to desperation. Miyano’s performance matters because the breakdown is not simply a louder version of the character’s usual theatrical manner; it marks a change in what that manner can conceal. The moment lets the audience hear the cost beneath the persona.

7. Robin says she wants to live — One Piece

Japanese performer named: Yuriko Yamaguchi.

Robin’s declaration is cathartic because it turns a long-held wish into something spoken aloud. The emotional movement from isolation toward a plea for connection gives the line its force. Yamaguchi’s delivery is the center of that release: the scene is not just a statement of intent, but the sound of Robin allowing herself to want a future.

8. Ushio’s loss — Clannad After Story

Japanese performer named: Satomi Kōrogi.

The scene draws power from the contrast between an innocent voice and the confusion and sorrow surrounding it. Kōrogi’s performance makes the loss feel intimate rather than abstract, grounding the emotion in a child’s perspective. Its restraint is part of its effect; the scene does not need to turn grief into spectacle to make it painful.

9. Eren witnesses his mother’s death — Attack on Titan

Japanese performer named: Yuki Kaji.

Eren’s response moves through horror, helplessness, and rage. Kaji’s performance helps make the event more than a plot catalyst: listeners hear a child confronted with something he cannot stop, and the anger that follows has the sound of grief with nowhere to go.

10. What to know about the final selection

The March 6, 2024 source’s available account identifies nine moments, not a verifiable tenth entry. Rather than invent a scene or performer, this list stops at the nine it names. Other anime monologues are often praised on their own terms, including examples discussed by AnimeNation, but a notable monologue is not automatically evidence for the missing item in this particular list.

How to compare Japanese performances and English dubs

A dub should be evaluated as a performance in its own right. Translation, lip synchronization, voice direction, cast chemistry, and recording quality affect the result alongside vocal technique. An English version may make different choices to fit timing or phrasing; that is not, by itself, proof that it is better or worse acting.

A separate ComicBook.com roundup of English dubs praises performances such as Steve Blum as Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop, Mark Gatha as Domon Kasshu in Mobile Fighter G Gundam, and Justin Cook as Yusuke in Yu Yu Hakusho. It also acknowledges that some older dubs can have awkward delivery, translation changes, or dated sound quality. These are editorial assessments, not objective measurements. The useful approach is to compare specific scenes and versions, rather than make a blanket claim about a language.

What awards can—and cannot—tell you

Voice acting recognition is not limited to one language category. Sony’s official 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards transcript records separate Best Voice Artist Performance categories, including Aoi Yuki for The Apothecary Diaries in Japanese and Aleks Le for Solo Leveling in English. That is evidence of recognition across language categories at that event; it does not validate a historical top-ten ranking or establish a consensus about these older scenes.
