If you want another film with the historical weight, crime, and moral reckoning of Killers of the Flower Moon, start with Wind River for an Indigenous-set investigation or There Will Be Blood for oil, ambition, and extraction. The other picks below take different routes: western violence, racial injustice, or sprawling crime sagas. These are curated by the kind of connection you may be looking for, not ranked as objectively closest.

What makes a movie like Killers of the Flower Moon?

Martin Scorsese’s 2023 film is set in 1920s Oklahoma, where oil wealth came to the Osage community before a series of murders targeted Osage people. Based on David Grann’s nonfiction book, it combines historical crime with a western setting and a broad portrait of power and betrayal. Apple and Paramount describe it as an epic western crime saga. The Cannes catalogue lists a 206-minute runtime, while Paramount lists 207 minutes, so it is safest to describe it as just over three hours.

Similarity can mean very different things here. Some recommendations share an Indigenous or racial-justice lens; others echo the film’s oil-and-greed themes, investigation, western atmosphere, or historical crime-epic scale. A similarity catalogue can help surface candidates, but it does not make their histories interchangeable.

10 movies to watch after Killers of the Flower Moon

1. Wind River — for an Indigenous-set crime investigation

Choose Wind River if you want a crime story whose investigation unfolds in an Indigenous setting. Its connection is one of subject area and investigative appeal, not a retelling of the Osage murders or an equivalent story about the same community.

2. Thunderheart — for reservation politics and sovereignty

Thunderheart offers a crime-thriller path into reservation politics and Indigenous sovereignty. It shares an interest in crime and the pressures surrounding Indigenous communities, but those connections should not blur the distinct histories each film addresses.

3. There Will Be Blood — for oil, ambition, and extraction

This is the clearest thematic match if the oil wealth in Killers of the Flower Moon stayed with you. Paramount describes There Will Be Blood as an epic about “family, faith, power and oil,” set during California’s turn-of-the-century petroleum boom. It explores resource wealth and ambition reshaping a community, but its plot and historical subject differ from Scorsese’s film.

4. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford — for a mournful western epic

Watch this for a slow, elegiac western shaped by violence, mythmaking, and public memory. The overlap is less about matching historical events and more about the somber atmosphere and the way a violent past becomes a story people tell.

5. Hostiles — for a severe western treatment of conflict

Hostiles is a stark choice if you want more western iconography and a difficult portrayal of Native-white conflict. It is not a depiction of the Osage murders; the useful point of comparison is its engagement with violence and conflict in a western setting.

6. The Irishman — for Scorsese’s long-form crime storytelling

For viewers drawn to Scorsese’s expansive crime narratives, The Irishman offers another long historical sweep built around moral compromise. Its connection is chiefly the director’s approach and crime-epic form rather than shared subject matter.

7. Gangs of New York — for a historical crime panorama

Gangs of New York is another Scorsese historical crime story in which political power and violence shape a community. Choose it for the director-led historical panorama, not for a parallel to the Osage history.
