The best movies about the end of the world make very different disasters feel personal: nuclear annihilation, a planet on a collision course, vanished populations, or life after civilization has fallen. This ranking weighs the catastrophe’s scale, whether the story unfolds before or after it, its tone, and whose experience anchors the film. It includes end-of-the-world movies, apocalypse movies, and post-apocalyptic movies—not as interchangeable labels, but as distinct kinds of stories.
How this ranking approaches apocalypse movies
“End of the world” can mean the planet itself is about to be destroyed, nuclear war is unfolding, or society has already collapsed. The British Film Institute’s end-of-world film guide and post-apocalyptic film guide cover that range, from imminent disaster to survival afterward. The order below is an editorial ranking, not a claim of objective consensus. It favors films that pair a distinctive cinematic approach with a memorable human or social perspective.

Children of Men (2006)
Type: Slow-burn societal apocalypse. Focus: People and institutions in a collapsing world. The BFI frames this science-fiction parable as a post-apocalyptic thriller shaped by a slow-burn apocalypse. Its catastrophe is not a single spectacular impact: the unraveling society gives the story its pressure and makes survival feel political as well as personal.

Dr. Strangelove (1964)
Type: Nuclear annihilation. Focus: Military and political institutions. Stanley Kubrick turns the possibility of global nuclear destruction into black comedy. Criterion describes the premise as a nuclear attack ordered by an unbalanced general; Peter Sellers plays three roles. The film’s place here reflects how sharply satire can expose the absurdity and danger of systems capable of ending the world. Criterion identifies it as a US/UK film with a 95-minute runtime. Criterion’s film page lists Blu-ray and DVD editions; it does not establish current marketplace stock.

-
When the Wind Blows (1986)
Type: Nuclear war and its aftermath. Focus: An elderly couple. This animated adaptation of Raymond Briggs’s graphic novel follows a British couple who rely on civil-defense advice as war gives way to isolation and radiation sickness. Its intimate domestic scale makes the consequences of nuclear catastrophe painfully concrete, rather than presenting destruction as spectacle.
-
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Type: Post-apocalyptic survival. Focus: A community in motion. A high-energy action choice in a field often associated with solemn ruin, the film represents survival after social collapse through relentless movement and conflict. The BFI includes it in its post-apocalyptic selections; its contrast with the quieter films on this list shows how widely tone can vary within the genre.
Rank #2
-
Melancholia (2011)
Type: Planetary impact threat. Focus: Two sisters and their family relationships. Lars von Trier’s film places an approaching planet on a collision course with Earth, but the BFI also foregrounds depression and family dynamics. The imminent destruction is inseparable from the sisters’ inner lives, making this a personal drama as much as a cosmic-apocalypse story.

The Road (2009)
Type: After a civilization-destroying cataclysm. Focus: A father and child. The BFI describes the film as a father’s struggle after a cataclysm has destroyed civilization. Rather than dwell on the disaster’s mechanics, it centers the difficult work of protecting someone in a world stripped of ordinary security. The BFI article records it as a reader suggestion.
-
Threads (1984)
Type: Nuclear war. Focus: People living through the consequences. The BFI describes this television film as depicting nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union, and lists it among reader suggestions. Its inclusion recognizes that some of the most consequential apocalypse stories were made for television rather than theatrical release.
-
The Quiet Earth (1985)
Type: Vanished population and aftermath. Focus: An individual, then other survivors. In the BFI’s account, a man wakes to find people apparently gone; the film follows his adjustment and later encounters with other survivors. Its premise makes absence itself the disaster, shifting the genre away from familiar images of explosions and toward the psychological problem of living in an emptied world.
Rank #4

-
Take Shelter (2011)
Type: Feared impending disaster. Focus: A man, his family, and uncertainty. Jeff Nichols’s film centers on a man consumed by a sense of catastrophe to come. The BFI highlights the tension between his warnings, his family circumstances, and the question of whether he is right. That uncertainty makes the film a close, domestic form of end-of-the-world suspense rather than a conventional disaster spectacle.

WALL-E (2008)
Type: A deserted, garbage-covered Earth. Focus: An individual and a developing romance. The BFI praises the film’s visual storytelling and romance. Its ruined setting makes a compelling contrast with its tenderness: the post-apocalyptic world is not only a backdrop, but the reason small signs of connection and care matter.

How to choose a movie about the apocalypse
- For nuclear-war satire: Start with Dr. Strangelove.
- For an intimate, devastating response to nuclear war: Choose When the Wind Blows; for a television depiction of nuclear conflict, choose Threads.
- For survival after civilization collapses: Try The Road for a father-and-child story or Mad Max: Fury Road for action.
- For catastrophe that remains uncertain or distant: Choose Take Shelter for personal suspense or Melancholia for an approaching planetary collision.
- For a vanished or deserted world: Try The Quiet Earth or WALL-E.
- For a slow societal breakdown: Children of Men makes the gradual collapse central to its thriller.
Why these films do not share one kind of ending
Apocalypse movies are not all about the same event. Some focus on the threat before it arrives, as in Take Shelter and Melancholia; others depict catastrophe in progress or its consequences, as in Threads and When the Wind Blows. Post-apocalyptic films begin from a world already transformed, whether people have vanished, as in The Quiet Earth, or society has broken down, as in The Road and Mad Max: Fury Road. The difference shapes not only the setting but also the emotional scale: institutional satire, family drama, community struggle, or solitary survival.
