Free music is not automatically free to reuse. A download may be completely lawful while the track remains protected by copyright, requires attribution, limits commercial use, or prohibits edits.
The sites below provide legitimate ways to obtain free music or legally authorized downloads. Before publishing a track in a YouTube video, podcast, game, advertisement, or social post, check the license attached to that specific recording.
What “100% legal” means here
In this guide, “100% legal” refers to getting the music through the site’s own download feature or an artist-authorized download option. It does not mean every track can be reused without conditions.

Creative Commons licenses are a useful example:
- CC BY: commercial use is allowed with attribution.
- CC BY-NC: noncommercial use only.
- CC BY-ND: adaptations are not allowed.
- CC BY-NC-ND: noncommercial, unadapted redistribution with attribution.
“Royalty-free” also does not mean “copyright-free.” It generally means you can use the work under a license without paying recurring royalties.

1. Free Music Archive
Free Music Archive is one of the most useful choices when you need music organized by genre and usage rights. Its search page does not treat every track as unrestricted; it provides filters that help separate public-domain, commercial-use, remix/video, and Creative Commons material.
How to search
- Open the FMA Search page.
- Enter an artist, track, or album in Search for specific artists, tracks or albums.
- Click Search.
- Use License and select a relevant option such as Public Domain, Commercial Use, or Use in a Remix or Video.
- Enable Include CC license if you want Creative Commons results.
You can also narrow results by genres including Electronic, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Rock, Classical, Instrumental, Folk, Pop, and Spoken. Read the individual license before downloading or publishing anything.
2. Musopen
Musopen focuses on classical music and provides music that can be browsed, streamed, or downloaded. The site states that the music it hosts is royalty and copyright free, but it also tells users to check the license icons for specific restrictions.

Do not assume that every recording of a famous classical work has identical reuse terms.
Finding a recording
- Open Music from Musopen’s navigation.
- Click More filters.
- Search by title, or use All composers, All instruments, and All periods.
- Review the license icon attached to the specific file.
- Download only after confirming the permitted use.
Composer shortcuts include Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Frederic Chopin, and Franz Schubert.
3. ccMixter and dig.ccMixter
ccMixter is particularly useful for creators who need samples, remixes, or vocal parts. Its main site includes Remixes, Samples, and A Cappellas, and directs users to dig.ccMixter for searchable music.
The dedicated commercial-use page includes categories such as music for film, music for games, free for commercial use, and royalty free licensed. It currently includes an instrumental only option and a reset filters control.
ccMixter’s free-use guidance asks users to give credit. Attribution is therefore part of the practical terms, and the license on the individual track remains controlling. Save the credit information with the downloaded file.
4. YouTube Audio Library
The YouTube Audio Library is the safest first stop for music intended for YouTube. YouTube says the library is available exclusively in YouTube Studio and that only music and sound effects from this library are known to YouTube as copyright-safe.

Download steps
- Sign in to YouTube.
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Select Audio library from the left menu.
- Use filters for title, genre, mood, artist, attribution, or duration.
- Click Play to preview a track.
- Hover over the date and click DOWNLOAD.
The download is an MP3. For Creative Commons music, choose Attribution required, click the Creative Commons icon in the License type column, and select Copy in the pop-up window to copy the required credit. To find tracks that do not require attribution, select Attribution not required.
Do not confuse the Audio Library with random YouTube channels labeled “no copyright music.” YouTube does not give those uploads the same assurance.
5. Pixabay Music
Pixabay Music offers a large catalog of downloadable tracks. The page is reached through Explore → Media → Music and includes the search field Search for music. Pixabay currently advertises more than 270,000 free music tracks.
Its license summary says that content may be used for free, attribution is not required, content may be modified, and the content may not be sold or distributed on a standalone basis. Credit is appreciated even when it is not required.
Pixabay music is not automatically public domain. The full Pixabay Content License controls, and individual files may also involve trademark, privacy, moral, property, or other third-party rights. Keep a copy of the track page and license information when you download a file.
6. Mixkit
Mixkit provides free stock music for video and other creative projects. The music page includes genres such as Ambient, Classical, Country, Drum & Bass, Funk, Hip Hop, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Trap, Techno, Trailer Music, Trance, and World.
Its licensing system is divided by item type. On the license page, choose Stock Music, then click View License. Do not apply the terms for stock video, templates, or sound effects to a music track. Each item type has a specific license.
Best use
Mixkit is a practical option when you want a polished background track and quick genre browsing rather than a music archive organized around Creative Commons licenses.
7. Incompetech
Incompetech hosts music by Kevin MacLeod. The catalog is labeled Royalty-Free Music, so the music should not be described literally as copyright-free. Permission comes from the applicable license and credit requirements.

The catalog has unusually useful discovery tools. Search with Search title, instruments, description, or select Filter by Genre and Filter by Feel. Genres include Horror, Jazz, Electronica, Soundtrack, Rock, and World. Feel filters include Action, Calm, Dark, Driving, Epic, Mysterious, Suspenseful, and Uplifting.
Use the track’s own licensing instructions, especially when attribution is required. The site also offers Download all the files at once and lists tracks by ISRC number or alphabetically, which is useful for browsing a large catalog.
8. Bensound
Bensound has a dedicated Free Music for Videos page. Its free tracks are presented for use on platforms including YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Track cards use the label Free Download, and the page includes filters for genre, mood, theme, instrument, vocal type, energy level, and duration.
Bensound’s current free-music page states that free use requires attribution. It also displays claims such as No copyright claim, Free to use with Attribution, and Safe for YouTube. Treat those claims as part of the site’s stated offering, not as permission to remove the required credit.
A possible interruption is the Important! prompt requesting a YouTube Channel ID for automatic clearance. You can choose Enter Now or Don’t remind me. Check the current track terms before using music outside the platforms and uses listed by Bensound.

9. Bandcamp
Bandcamp is an artist and label marketplace, not a universal free-music library. Releases may be paid, free, name-your-price, or streaming-only. Download availability and price are set by the artist or label.
When an artist enables a free or name-your-price download, obtaining the file through Bandcamp is a legitimate transaction. That does not automatically grant permission to use it in a video, podcast, game, advertisement, or commercial project. A purchase generally gives you access to the music file, not a blanket synchronization or redistribution license.
What to check
- Does the release actually offer a download rather than streaming only?
- What file formats are provided?
- Has the artist supplied a separate reuse license?
- Are you allowed to synchronize the recording with your project?
If the release page does not grant reuse rights, contact the artist or label before publishing.

SoundCloud is primarily a streaming and hosting platform. Some artists enable downloads, but downloading is controlled on a track-by-track basis. A playable track is not necessarily downloadable, and a downloadable track is not automatically reusable in another project.

Use the download control supplied by the artist or rights holder. Avoid third-party “SoundCloud downloader” sites: they are not the rights-holder-provided download mechanism and do not establish permission to copy or reuse a track.
SoundCloud also requires JavaScript. If the site displays You need to enable JavaScript to use SoundCloud or says that your browser is incompatible, enable JavaScript or use a supported browser. SoundCloud currently lists Chrome 57+, Firefox 50+, Edge 18+, and Safari 10.1+ for ordinary use, with newer requirements for creator tools.

How to avoid a copyright problem
- Use the official download button. Do not rip a stream or use a third-party downloader.
- Read the license for the exact track. A site-wide reputation is not a substitute for track-specific terms.
- Check commercial-use permission. “Free” may mean free for personal projects only.
- Check whether edits are allowed. This is especially important for Creative Commons NoDerivatives licenses.
- Copy the attribution text exactly. Include the creator, track title, license, and source when required.
- Keep evidence. Save the download page, license page, date, and any receipt or permission email.
- Check platform rules. A license can permit use while a platform’s automated claim system still requires you to dispute a claim.
Sites and claims to treat cautiously
Internet Archive downloads do not automatically prove public-domain or reuse permission; its files have different rights statuses. Similarly, music from arbitrary YouTube channels labeled “no copyright” does not have the same status as music in YouTube’s Audio Library.
FreePD is also no longer a current recommendation: it says the service permanently closed and was taken offline in 2025.

Are these sites really legal?
They provide legitimate download or artist-authorized access mechanisms. The legality of reusing a particular track depends on its license, attribution requirements, commercial-use rules, and any additional third-party rights.
Can I use all of this music in monetized YouTube videos?
No. Choose tracks whose license permits commercial use, follow attribution instructions, and keep proof of the license. YouTube Audio Library is designed for YouTube use, but individual tracks can still have attribution requirements.
Is royalty-free music copyright-free?
No. Royalty-free usually means the licensed use does not require recurring royalty payments. The creator may still own the copyright and impose conditions.
Which site is best for completely free background music?
Pixabay Music, Mixkit, Incompetech, Free Music Archive, and YouTube Audio Library are convenient starting points. Compare the exact license before using a track commercially.

Not automatically. A free download grants access to the file, while podcast use may require synchronization and public-performance or distribution permission. Obtain an explicit reuse license if the release does not provide one.
The Bottom Line
For the simplest workflow, start with YouTube Audio Library for YouTube projects, Free Music Archive or ccMixter when you need license and remix filters, and Pixabay Music or Mixkit for stock-style background tracks. Musopen is strong for classical recordings. Bandcamp and SoundCloud are legitimate sources only when the artist has enabled the download, and neither grants automatic reuse rights.
The safest habit is simple: download through the official site, read the exact track license, provide the required attribution, and save a copy of the terms.
