The best authorized alternative depends on the game you want: U.S. sports rights are split among leagues, broadcasters, and streaming providers, so no single service here is a dependable home for every team or event. Local market, out-of-market status, blackouts, device limits, and provider authentication all affect what you can watch. The ten options below cover different needs; some are free routes, while others require a subscription or a participating TV provider.
10 authorized options to consider
This U.S.-focused list is organized by what each option can help you watch—not by a claim that every service carries every game. Package names, rights, prices, and availability can change by season.
| Option | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Free over-the-air TV | Locally broadcast games without a streaming subscription | Reception and channel carriage vary by location. It does not provide subscription-only or out-of-market games. The FCC discusses free broadcast TV as one way to retain access to live sports. |
| NFL Channel | Free NFL programming and game-day coverage | The NFL describes the channel as offering live game-day coverage, replays, and other programming. It is not live access to every regular-season game. |
| NFL+ | Live local and nationally televised NFL games on a phone or tablet | The NFL says live games are limited to phones and tablets and are subject to rights and blackouts. The service also includes replays and other content. |
| NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube TV | Out-of-market Sunday afternoon NFL games | The NFL identifies Sunday Ticket for out-of-market Sunday afternoon games; it is not a pass to every NFL game. |
| Prime Video | NFL Thursday Night Football and the Black Friday game | The NFL lists Prime Video as a destination for those games. Check the current season schedule and your account’s availability. |
| Peacock / NBC and Paramount+ / CBS | Selected NFL games carried by NBC or CBS | The NFL lists Peacock and NBC for Sunday Night Football. It says Paramount+ subscribers can stream local CBS games. Which games are available depends on the broadcast and your market. |
| ESPN and FOX One | A broad mix of sports from ESPN and FOX | FOX’s bundle page lists NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLB, NHL, college sports, NASCAR, UFC, FIFA World Cup, and more. The page accessed in 2026 listed $39.99 per month and no free trial; confirm the current offer and exact included channels before subscribing. The companies claim more than 50,000 live events every year; that is a vendor figure, not an independent measurement. |
| MLB.TV | Out-of-market MLB team games | MLB identifies MLB.TV for out-of-market games. National broadcasts and blackout rules can affect whether a particular game is available. |
| Team and regional MLB services | Some in-market MLB team broadcasts | MLB’s team guide lists separate services by territory, with examples including SNLA+, SNY, and MASN+. Eligibility and available games depend on the team and your location. |
| NBA League Pass / NBA TV through a participating provider | NBA viewing through an eligible TV or streaming provider | The NBA lists participating providers including Amazon Prime, Fubo, and Sling TV. If you buy through a provider, that provider handles billing and account management. |
How to choose the right service for a game
Start with the event, not the app. A league’s schedule or viewing guide can identify the broadcaster or service for a particular matchup; then check that service’s current coverage and access rules for your location.
Recommended Free Tools
- Identify the exact game. Note the league, teams, date, and whether the game is local, nationally televised, or out of market.
- Match it to a rights holder. Check the league’s current viewing page or game listing for the broadcaster, league service, or provider carrying it.
- Check geography and blackouts. A service may carry out-of-market games but not a local matchup, or a national broadcast may be unavailable through a team package.
- Confirm device compatibility. Check whether live viewing works on your phone, tablet, desktop, or connected TV. NFL+’s live-game phone-and-tablet limit is a notable example.
- Review the purchase route. Determine whether you subscribe directly or through a TV provider, and who manages billing and account access.
- Compare the actual season offer. Verify current price, trial status, included events, replay access, and bundle contents before paying. Sports packages can change from season to season.
Why one streaming subscription rarely covers every team
Broadcast, cable, and streaming rights are divided among leagues, networks, and providers. In a Federal Register notice published March 4, 2026, the FCC described the result: “Sports fans are increasingly left with a fragmented ecosystem that requires them to subscribe to multiple services to watch their favorite teams.” Free local broadcast viewing can help with games carried over the air, but it does not replace paid access to every event.

Local and out-of-market are different
League packages often distinguish games in your local market from games outside it. MLB makes that distinction between in-market team services and MLB.TV’s out-of-market access. National broadcasts and blackout restrictions can further change where a game is available.
Live rights do not always mean every device
A subscription may include a game but limit where its live stream plays. NFL support, in an article dated August 25, 2025, says NFL+ live local and nationally televised games are available on phones and tablets, while out-of-market Sunday afternoon games require NFL Sunday Ticket. Read the device and game restrictions for the exact package rather than assuming that a phone entitlement also works on a TV.

Provider subscriptions can change who manages your account
For NBA League Pass or NBA TV bought through a participating U.S. TV provider, the NBA says the provider manages billing. This can also affect where you sign in or make account changes. The NBA provider page was updated September 8, 2026; check the current participating-provider list and terms when purchasing.

Local broadcast channels
Where a local station carries a game, over-the-air reception can provide a no-streaming-subscription route. An indoor HDTV antenna may help receive local channels, but reception depends on your location, distance from transmitters, terrain, and building conditions. Check local channel availability before buying; an antenna does not unlock subscription streams, blacked-out games, or out-of-market packages.

NFL Channel
The NFL’s free channel offers game-day coverage, replays, and other NFL programming. Treat it as a source of NFL content rather than a replacement for a package that carries every live regular-season game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to verify before you subscribe
- Coverage: Does the plan include the sport, league, and specific games you intend to watch?
- Market: Are the games local, in-market, or out of market for your location?
- Blackouts and national broadcasts: Are any games excluded or routed to another broadcaster?
- Devices: Can you watch live on the device you plan to use, including a television if needed?
- Authentication: Does the service require a participating TV provider or provider sign-in?
- Features and cost: Are live games, replays, and on-demand content included, and what are the current price and trial terms?
- Territory: Is the team service or package available where you live?
Official league and provider pages are the best place to confirm these details because rights and package terms are seasonal and can change. This matters especially for MLB’s 2026 team-service guide and for the current FOX/ESPN bundle offer.
