Apple Wallet works best when its cards and passes are set up for the moments you need them. These 10 practical tips cover default cards, Express Mode, transit, passes, order tracking, privacy, and what to do if your iPhone goes missing. The options available depend on your device, region, issuer, transit operator, and participating merchants.
1. Set your preferred payment card as the default
To change the card Apple Pay selects automatically, open Wallet, touch and hold the credit or debit card you want, then drag it to the front of the stack. You can still choose another card when paying. Apple documents the process in its Wallet setup guide and Apple Pay purchase guide.
2. Turn on Express Mode for eligible cards, passes, and keys
Express Mode lets some supported transit cards, passes, and keys work at a reader without waking or unlocking your iPhone or authenticating first. It is useful for credentials you present often, but availability depends on the specific item. Apple says some compatible items may continue to work for up to five hours after the iPhone needs charging; this does not apply when the phone is turned off, and repeated checks can reduce the reserve. Where supported, you can select a transit card for Express Mode and choose a payment card to use if that transit card is not accepted. Apple allows one Express transit card per transit network. Check the local operator’s support and instructions before making a change: transferring some physical transit cards into Wallet deactivates the physical card. Apple’s information on transit cards in Wallet explains that availability and transfer steps vary.

4. Let eligible passes appear when you need them
Some passes can be configured to suggest on the Lock Screen based on time or location—for example, a boarding pass near departure. Open the pass in Wallet to check its available settings. At the venue, present the barcode, QR code, or contactless credential the operator requests; not every pass supports Lock Screen suggestions or the same presentation method.
5. Verify a transit pass before you reach the gate
Wallet’s transit and eMoney features depend on supported devices, markets, operators, and readers. Before a trip, confirm the local operator accepts the Wallet credential you plan to use and follow its transfer instructions. In particular, do not assume a physical card will remain usable after transferring it to Wallet. Apple describes market and transfer differences in its transit card support information.

6. Search Wallet activity and available card details
For supported items, Wallet can show recent activity and card details. Its search can help locate transactions by information such as merchant, date, amount, or location. The activity and details shown vary by card issuer and item, so a missing transaction view does not necessarily mean the card was not used.
7. Hide expired passes you might need again
To keep an expired pass out of the main Wallet view without discarding it, turn on Hide Expired Passes in Wallet & Apple Pay settings. Hidden passes can be found in Wallet’s Expired section, where you can restore or permanently delete them. Deleting a pass removes it from your other Apple Wallet devices as well. Apple distinguishes these actions in its card and pass removal instructions.

8. Check Wallet for participating-merchant order tracking
Orders from participating apps or websites may appear in Wallet with order details and shipping progress. It is not a universal tracking tool: the merchant must support the feature. You can manage the related setting under Wallet & Apple Pay settings.
9. Understand Apple’s explanation of Apple Pay card numbers
Apple says, “Apple doesn’t store the original card numbers of credit, debit or prepaid cards that you add to Apple Pay.” Its support documentation explains that Apple Pay uses a device-specific Device Account Number stored in the Secure Element, along with a dynamic security code for transactions. This describes Apple’s stated payment design; it is not a guarantee that every payment is risk-free. Read Apple’s Apple Pay security and privacy information.

10. Use Wallet keys and IDs only where they are accepted
Depending on the issuer and partner, Wallet may support home, car, hotel, or other keys, as well as identity credentials in some jurisdictions. Features such as Express Mode and sharing are not available for every key type. Apple says ID data is encrypted on-device and can be presented selectively, but an issuer, local rules, and the reader determine whether a credential will be accepted. Keep physical credentials when local requirements or a fallback plan call for them. Apple explains supported options in its Wallet keys information and identity card information.

Apple documents removing payment cards from a missing iPhone through your Apple Account device page or another Apple device; contacting the card issuer is another route. Removing a card from the iPhone does not necessarily remove it from Wallet on your other devices. Follow Apple’s card and pass removal instructions for the available methods.
