現行のPCやMacで3.5インチフロッピーを読むには、対応するUSB外付けフロッピーディスクドライブを接続します。標準的なDOS／Windows形式の1.44MBまたは720KBディスクなら、Windowsではエクスプローラー、MacではFinderから開き、必要なファイルを先にPCへコピーするのが基本です。USB-CのみのMacでUSB-A端子のドライブを使う場合は、変換アダプターかハブも必要です。古いMac、PC-98、専用機器のディスクなどは一般的なUSBドライブで読めるとは限りません。
まず、ディスクの形式とサイズを確認する
この記事で扱うのは、主にWindows／DOS形式の標準的な3.5インチフロッピーです。ディスクのラベル、保管時の用途、作成した機器が分かる場合は、それらを確認してからドライブを選んでください。

SonyのUSBフロッピードライブの仕様例では、3.5型2HD・2DDと1.44MB・1.2MB・720KBが挙げられています。一方、現行販売例には1.44MBと720KBのみ対応し、1.2MB非対応とする製品もあります。対応範囲は製品ごとに異なるため、「USB対応」だけで判断せず、Sonyの仕様例と1.2MB非対応の販売例のように容量を確認してください。
NEC PC-98用ディスクは、IBM PC互換機向けの標準USBドライブでは読めない、または動作保証されない可能性があります。Sonyの旧製品サポート情報でもPC-98シリーズや互換機は保証対象外です。古いMac独自形式や業務機器・音楽機器用も同様に、一般的なUSBドライブで読めると決めつけず、作成元に適合した機器や専門サービスを検討してください。

Due to long storage times, some floppy disks may be corrupted, mouldy or dusty, so some of your floppy disks may not be successfully opened by our floppy disk drive, or the drive may initially be able to open some floppy disks but stop working due to dust on the disks. Therefore, please carefully check the status of the floppy disk before reading to avoid the drive stopping working due to floppy disk issues.

用意するものと購入時の確認項目
- 読み取りたいサイズに対応した3.5インチUSBフロッピーディスクドライブ
- PCまたはMacの空きUSBポート。ドライブの端子と合わない場合は変換アダプターまたはUSBハブ
- 読み取ったファイルを保存するPC内のフォルダーや別の保存先
購入前には、ドライブが3.5インチ用か、1.44MB・720KB・必要なら1.2MBに対応するか、使うWindowsまたはmacOSのバージョンに対応すると明記されているかを確認します。端子がUSB-AかUSB-Cかも見てください。USB-A端子の製品をUSB-CしかないMacにつなぐには、USB-CハブまたはUSB-A to USB-Cアダプターが必要です。ドライバー不要をうたう製品でも、実際の対応OSは製品ごとに確かめます。

- USBフロッピードライブをPCに接続し、Windowsのデバイス設定が終わるまで待ちます。認識しない場合は、まずハブを外してPC本体のUSBポートに直接接続してください。
- ディスクを挿入します。挿入方向はドライブの表示に従ってください。
- Windowsキー＋Eでエクスプローラーを開き、「PC」または「This PC」を選びます。
- 一覧に現れた「3.5インチフロッピーディスク」などのドライブを開きます。表示名やドライブ文字はPCごとに異なるので、ラベルや容量も見て対象を確認してください。
- 必要なファイルをPC内のフォルダーへコピーします。ファイルをフロッピー上で直接編集・保存せず、先にコピーしたファイルを使ってください。
- コピーしたファイルを開き、必要な内容が読めることを確認します。
Windowsでは外付けストレージにドライブ文字やラベルが割り当てられます。表示上の違いを確認するには、Microsoftの外付けストレージに関する説明も参照できます。

取り外す

Macでフロッピーを読む
- USBドライブをMacに接続します。USB-A端子のドライブをUSB-CのみのMacで使う場合は、変換アダプターかUSB-Cハブを介します。
- ディスクをドライブに挿入します。
- Finderを開き、サイドバーの「場所」に現れたディスクを選択します。
- 必要なファイルをMac内のフォルダーへドラッグしてコピーし、コピー先からファイルを開いて確認します。
Finderにディスクが出ない場合は、「アプリケーション」から「ディスクユーティリティ」を開き、「表示」＞「すべてのデバイスを表示」を選びます。ドライブやボリュームが見えるか確認し、ボリュームが認識されているのにマウントされていない場合は対象を選んで「マウント」をクリックします。Appleのボリュームをマウントする手順
AppleのFinder手順では、外部ストレージをサイドバーから選び、ファイルをMacへ移動できます。使い終えたらFinderサイドバーの取り出しボタンをクリックするか、「ファイル」＞「取り出す」を選び、取り出しが終わってからUSBドライブを抜きます。Appleの外部ストレージの使い方

「フォーマットしますか」「初期化しますか」と表示されたら

この表示は、ディスクが未フォーマット・破損している場合だけでなく、読み取る機器が形式に対応していない場合にも起こり得ます。USBドライブの抜き差し、別のUSBポート、別のPCやMac、別の対応ドライブを試し、作成元の機器やディスク容量も確認してください。必要なデータがあるディスクに対して、確認のためのフォーマットを実行しないでください。

USBドライブ自体が認識されない
- ケーブルを抜き差しし、別のUSBポートを試します。
- USBハブを外してPC本体へ直接接続します。接続が安定しない場合は別のハブやアダプターも試します。
- Windowsでは「デバイスマネージャー」や「ディスクの管理」に機器が表示されるか確認し、Macではディスクユーティリティで「すべてのデバイスを表示」を選んで確認します。
- 別のPCまたはMacでも試します。複数の環境で機器が認識されない場合は、ドライブ、ケーブル、変換アダプターの不具合が考えられます。
ドライブは認識されるが、ディスクが開けない
対応外の容量や形式、ディスクの劣化、表面の傷・汚れ、ドライブ側のヘッド汚れや故障などが考えられます。たとえば、使っているドライブが720KBと1.44MBには対応していても、1.2MBには対応しない場合があります。仕様に記載がない容量を読めると想定せず、製品の対応表とディスクの用途を照合してください。

ディスクを何度も無理に読み込ませたり、分解したり、表面を布でこすったりしないでください。別の対応ドライブや別OSで試す方法はありますが、重要なデータでエラーが続く場合は、繰り返しの試行をやめて復旧の専門家へ相談する判断も必要です。

ファイルは見えるが開けない
ファイルをPCへコピーできるなら、ディスクからの読み取り自体は成功している可能性があります。開けない原因は、古いワープロや専用アプリのファイル形式など、ソフトウェアの互換性かもしれません。拡張子、ファイルサイズ、作成元のソフトや機器を確認し、変換を試す前に元ファイルを複数の場所へ保存してください。元のアプリを動かせる古いPCや仮想環境が必要になる場合もあります。
読めたら、まず別の場所へコピーする
フロッピー上のファイルを直接使うのではなく、必要なものをPCへコピーしてから開いてください。読めたファイルは、PC内だけでなく別の保存先にもバックアップしておくと、古いメディアや機器に依存せずに保管できます。画像や一般的な文書は適切なアプリで開けますが、古い専用形式ではコピー後も現行ソフトで表示できないことがあります。
特殊形式・重要データは通常のUSBドライブだけで判断しない
5.25インチや8インチのディスクには、対応するサイズの専用ドライブが必要です。PC-98、古いMac、ゲームのコピー保護、音楽・業務・計測機器用などは、ディスクから通常ファイルを読むだけでは内容を取り出せない場合があります。一般的なUSBフロッピードライブは標準形式のファイル読み取りには便利ですが、特殊形式やコピー保護を含むディスクの完全なイメージを保存できるとは限りません。
