The Union tourism ministry has given in-principle clearance to a ₹93.94-crore project to rejuvenate Maharaja Ajj Sarovar in Kharar, Punjab, under the Swadesh Darshan scheme. The project has not yet reached the reported formal-sanction, funding-release or tendering stages, so clearance does not mean construction has started.
What is planned for Maharaja Ajj Sarovar?
The proposal would redevelop the Sarovar, a water body along the Kharar–Chandigarh highway that reports describe as spanning 133 kanals. The Union tourism ministry’s reported project amount is ₹93.94 crore. The Punjab Tourism Department is named as the executing agency.
According to The Tribune, the proposed design would shape the Sarovar like a bow and arrow. The report also describes a proposal to divert surplus water from the BBMB Kajauli pipeline during winter and on low-demand days to fill it. These are reported plans, not completed works or independently verified engineering documents.
Has the project received final approval?
No. The Tribune reported that a high-level steering committee chaired by the Union tourism ministry secretary gave the project clearance on September 15, 2026, following three review rounds that began in July. That is an in-principle or committee clearance, not confirmation that formal sanction has been issued.

- Formal sanction: Reported as the next step before funds are released.
- Fund release and tendering: The report says these were still pending formal sanction; a senior Punjab Tourism Department official said tendering would begin after the sanction letter.
- Implementation: The reports do not confirm that construction or other project work has begun.

Where is the Sarovar, and what is its heritage association?
Maharaja Ajj Sarovar is in Kharar, beside the Kharar–Chandigarh highway. Both reports give its area as 133 kanals; that local unit is retained here without conversion.

The Sarovar is associated in Hindu tradition with Maharaja Ajj, described in the reports as Lord Rama’s grandfather. This is a traditional religious association, not an independently established genealogical finding. The Tribune further reports that excavations during the British period found remains associated with Hindu, Buddhist and Jain traditions, and that local protection orders were issued in 1891, 1896 and 1926. Those historical details are reported by the newspaper; primary archaeological and archival records were not reviewed for this account.
Why is water restoration central to the project?
Hindustan Times reports that urbanisation has affected the Sarovar’s natural watershed. Local stakeholders told the newspaper that restoring water and the site’s hydrological and ecological systems matters to the project’s long-term success.

The reported Kajauli pipeline proposal concerns diverting surplus supply at certain times; it is not evidence that the natural watershed has been restored or that a complete water-management solution is in place. The reports do not provide an independent hydrological assessment or water-quality data.

The reports do not include the signed sanction, detailed project report, tender notice, contractor, construction schedule, final design documents, itemized budget or independent environmental assessment. Until formal sanction and tendering are confirmed, the project’s exact scope, delivery timetable and conservation safeguards remain unsettled.

Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria was reported to have said that Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat announced the clearance after a meeting in New Delhi. The Tribune also reported that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had directed preparation of a project report. Shashi Pal Jain, president of the Shri Ram Mandir Ajj Sarovar Vikas Committee, described the effort as involving the community, state government and Union government; that was his characterization, not an official funding description. The reports also recount community preservation work, including ghat repairs and community facilities.
