Short answer: In Pokémon GO, a wild Zorua appears on the map wearing the same appearance as your current Buddy Pokémon. That disguise remains when you open the encounter; only after you catch it does the Oh? reveal animation identify Zorua. Your Buddy does not need to be fed or walking, and a shiny Buddy does not improve Zorua’s shiny odds.
How Zorua’s disguise works in Pokémon GO
Zorua’s Pokémon GO disguise is tied to the Trainer’s current Buddy. When a wild Zorua appears on the overworld map, the game displays it as that Buddy rather than as a visibly different fox Pokémon. The practical result is that the spawn can look like an ordinary encounter, even though it is actually Zorua.
This is a Pokémon GO-specific mechanic. It is different from relying on the main-series Illusion ability, where Zorua and Zoroark imitate another party member. In Pokémon GO, the relevant reference is the Buddy currently selected on your Trainer profile. Pokémon GO Hub’s specialist guide, updated August 31, 2026, reports that the same behavior applies to regular Zorua and Hisuian Zorua.

Because the map shows the Buddy’s appearance, you cannot identify every Zorua by its normal species model before tapping it. A Zorua copied from a common-looking Buddy may blend into the surrounding spawns. A Zorua copied from an unusual Buddy can be much easier to notice, but the appearance alone is never proof that a particular spawn is Zorua.

The disguise continues into the catch encounter
Tapping the disguised spawn starts a normal catch encounter, but the Pokémon does not immediately switch to Zorua. The disguise remains through that encounter. You must complete the capture to trigger the identity reveal.
The reveal happens after capture
After a successful catch, Pokémon GO plays the familiar Oh? reveal animation and identifies the Pokémon as Zorua. That post-catch reveal is the point at which you can confirm what the map spawn really was. Until then, the Buddy-like appearance is only a disguise.
Does your Buddy need to be fed or walking?
No. The Buddy only needs to be the Pokémon currently selected as your Buddy. It does not need to be fed, excited, or visibly walking beside your Trainer on the map for Zorua’s disguise to use it.

This distinction matters because the Buddy system can show several different states. A Pokémon can be selected as your Buddy without being on the map beside your avatar. Feeding it changes Buddy activity and can make it appear with you, but feeding is not a condition stated for Zorua disguises. Likewise, walking your Buddy is not required. If the correct Pokémon is selected in the Buddy slot, a wild Zorua can copy its appearance.

Choosing a Buddy that makes disguised Zorua easier to spot
Buddy selection can help recognition, not probability. Pokémon GO Hub suggests choosing a Buddy whose appearance is unlikely to be mistaken for a routine local wild spawn. The following choices are visual aids only; none guarantees that a nearby spawn is Zorua.

The guide describes these as practical ways to make a disguised spawn conspicuous. They are not an official list of guaranteed indicators. A Zorua can still copy an ordinary Buddy and look unremarkable, and an unusual-looking spawn can still be the Buddy Pokémon itself or another encounter.
Shiny Zorua and shiny Buddy questions
Does using a Shiny Buddy increase the Shiny Zorua rate?
No. A shiny Buddy can make a disguise easier to recognize, but Buddy selection does not raise Zorua’s shiny probability. The copied appearance and the captured Zorua’s shiny status are separate properties.

There is no authoritative, current numerical shiny-rate percentage established for Zorua in the available official material. Avoid treating a community estimate as a guaranteed rate, especially across different events or boosted periods.

Can a Zorua disguised as a regular Pokémon be shiny?
Yes. A Zorua copied from an ordinary-looking, non-shiny Buddy can still be shiny. Conversely, a Zorua copied from a shiny Buddy is not guaranteed to be shiny. The map model tells you which appearance Zorua is imitating, not whether the underlying encounter has shiny status.
How do you check whether it is shiny?
Catch the disguised Pokémon. The capture is required to reach the reveal, and the reveal is when you can verify that the Pokémon is Zorua and inspect its shiny status. Do not discard an ordinary-looking spawn on the assumption that its disguise rules out a shiny result.
Step-by-step: catching a disguised Zorua
- Set a recognition-friendly Buddy. Select the Buddy you want Pokémon GO to use for the disguise. A shiny, Shadow, Legendary, Mythical, rare-costume, or unusually large Pokémon may be easier to identify than a common-looking one.
- Return to the overworld map. Look for nearby Pokémon that match the appearance of your current Buddy. Matching the Buddy is a reason to investigate, not proof of Zorua.
- Tap the suspected spawn. The game opens a normal catch encounter. The Pokémon can still look like the Buddy at this stage.
- Complete the catch. Use the normal encounter controls and capture the Pokémon. The disguise is not removed merely because the encounter screen opened.
- Watch for the Oh? reveal. If the catch was a disguised Zorua, the reveal animation identifies it after capture.
- Check the result. Once revealed, confirm whether the Pokémon is regular or Hisuian Zorua and whether it is shiny. Buddy appearance cannot answer either question in advance.
If the Pokémon does not reveal as Zorua, the visual match was simply another Pokémon that resembled your Buddy. The recognition strategy improves what you notice; it does not convert a normal spawn into Zorua.
Regular and Hisuian Zorua evolution cost
Both forms use the same stated candy requirement: 50 Zorua Candy to evolve. The official Hisui event page gives the exact requirement for Hisuian Zorua: “You can use 50 Zorua Candy to evolve Hisuian Zorua into Hisuian Zoroark.” The same 50-Candy cost applies to regular Zorua evolving into regular Zoroark.

The disguise does not determine which evolution you receive. First identify the form after the catch reveal, then decide whether to spend Candy. Keeping the forms separate in your storage can help prevent evolving the wrong one when you are saving Candy for a particular Zoroark.
What happened during the October 10, 2026 Community Day
The official October 2026 Community Day announcement listed Zorua as appearing more frequently on October 10, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. local time. It also advertised a higher shiny chance, lure and other event bonuses, and a special evolution move: evolving Zorua during the event or within four hours afterward produced a Zoroark that knew Sucker Punch.
Those dates and bonuses are historical. The event window has passed as of October 16, 2026, so the higher encounter frequency, boosted shiny chance, lure bonuses, and four-hour Sucker Punch evolution window should not be treated as active now. A future event can introduce different dates or bonuses; check its own official announcement rather than carrying these terms forward.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming the map model is the species
A spawn that looks like your Buddy is not confirmed as that species until the catch is complete. Treat the match as a prompt to tap and investigate.

Waiting for the Buddy to walk beside you
Walking and feeding are unnecessary for the disguise mechanic. Verify that the intended Pokémon is selected as your current Buddy; no additional Buddy activity is required.
Using a shiny Buddy as a shiny detector
Shiny Buddy status is copied visually, not probabilistically. It can make a spawn conspicuous, but it cannot tell you that the hidden Zorua is shiny.
Skipping ordinary-looking disguises
An unremarkable Buddy can conceal a Zorua, including one that turns out to be shiny. Catching is the only way to reach the reveal and check.
Applying Ditto advice to Zorua
Pokémon GO’s official shiny Help Center material discusses general shiny indicators and Ditto’s separate disguise rule. Ditto’s behavior should not be used as evidence for Zorua. Zorua’s documented trigger is the current Buddy, and its identity is revealed after capture.
A practical decision rule
Use Buddy selection when your problem is recognition: choose a distinctive Buddy if you want possible Zorua matches to stand out on the map. Ignore Buddy selection as a shiny strategy: it does not improve odds, and the copied appearance cannot confirm shiny status. When in doubt, tap the matching spawn and finish the encounter, because the post-catch reveal is the decisive check.
