If you are choosing only between the two forms, Hisuian Zoroark is usually the more interesting PvP build. Its Normal/Ghost typing gives it a much more unusual defensive profile, and current Great League and Ultra League guidance supports a practical Shadow Claw, Swift and Shadow Ball set. That is not the same as calling it a top-tier investment: its database rankings are mid-pack snapshots, while recent analysis of ordinary Zoroark is decidedly negative. Choose the form whose resistances and move timing solve a specific team problem, and check the active cup rules before spending Stardust or Elite TMs.

The short answer

Hisuian Zoroark is the better default choice for a player who wants to build one Zoroark for Pokémon GO PvP. Normal/Ghost gives it a distinctive set of resistances, including a double resistance to Normal, and its recommended moveset has a clear role in Great and Ultra League teams. Ordinary Zoroark is a Dark type with more conventional weaknesses and very little margin for error because of its frailty.

Neither form is a safe, general-purpose open-league staple. Hisuian Zoroark’s current snapshots place it at 440th of 1,143 eligible Pokémon in Great League and 386th of 841 in Ultra League. Those are database rankings, not guarantees of a result in your team or cup. PvPoke warns that exact rankings can change as its simulator and ranking algorithms improve. Treat both forms as matchup-oriented options rather than automatic investments.

  • Pick Hisuian Zoroark when its Normal/Ghost resistances cover attacks your team struggles with and you can reach its charged moves reliably.
  • Pick ordinary Zoroark only for a deliberate matchup, a restricted format, or a collection goal; do not assume a new fast move fixes its bulk problem.
  • Build neither immediately if you are preparing for open Great or Ultra League and have not identified the opponents it is meant to beat.

What actually changes between the forms

Decision axis Ordinary Zoroark Hisuian Zoroark
Typing Dark Normal/Ghost
Documented weaknesses Bug, Fighting and Fairy Dark
Important resistances No unusual defensive advantage is highlighted in the current analysis Resists Bug, Fighting, Ghost and Poison; double-resists Normal
Current PvP assessment An October 9, 2026 analysis describes it as too fragile for strong open-league play Usable as a matchup option, but its current rankings are mid-pack rather than elite
Most useful fast-move choices Shadow Claw, Sucker Punch or Snarl Shadow Claw or Snarl
Suggested charged-move approach Usually Foul Play as the practical first target, with other moves for specific coverage Swift plus Shadow Ball with Shadow Claw in Great and Ultra League

The type difference is the foundation of the decision. Ordinary Zoroark’s Dark typing makes Fighting, Bug and Fairy pressure especially important. Hisuian Zoroark trades that profile for a single listed weakness to Dark while gaining several useful resistances. In a battle where an opponent is locked into a Normal, Ghost, Poison, Fighting or Bug move, that distinction can create turns for farming energy or force a shield decision. It does not make Hisuian Zoroark universally bulky; it makes the Pokémon more polarised and therefore more dependent on the matchup.

How strong is ordinary Zoroark right now?

The most recent detailed assessment in the available material is a Pokémon GO Hub analysis updated October 9, 2026. It is an analyst’s simulation-based evaluation, not an official game ruling or an independently measured win-rate study. Its conclusion is unusually harsh: ordinary Zoroark is exceptionally frail and remains a poor Ultra League option. JRE47, identified on the article as a Pokémon GO/PvP investigative journalist and GO Hub and Silph Arena/Road contributor, summarised that view with the line, “Zoroark is DOA, regardless of moves.” That is commentary from the dated analysis, not a developer assessment.

The same analysis gives these example league figures:

League example Listed Attack Listed Defense Listed HP High-stat-product variation Suggested 1/15/15 build
Great League 157 88 103 155 Attack, 105 HP 1/15/15 at 1,496 CP, level 21.5
Ultra League 202 113 134 201 Attack, 114 Defense, 136 HP 1/15/15 at 2,497 CP, level 42

These are figures shown on that analysis page, not official league rankings. The low defensive values explain why ordinary Zoroark can lose a matchup even after reaching a charged move first: a resisted hit may still leave it in danger, while a neutral fast move can consume too much of its health before the next move is ready.

Ordinary Zoroark’s fast moves

Fast move Damage per turn Energy per turn Practical implication
Shadow Claw 3.0 4.0 Reaches 40-energy Foul Play in five moves in the cited analysis
Sucker Punch 4.0 3.5 More fast-move damage, but slower energy pacing to Foul Play; listed as an event move
Snarl 1.67 4.33 Highest energy generation of the three, with a 1.5-second cooldown as displayed in the analysis

Shadow Claw is the key comparison with Sucker Punch. Sucker Punch deals more damage each turn, but Shadow Claw’s 4.0 energy per turn reaches Foul Play’s 40-energy cost in five moves; Sucker Punch needs an additional move. That timing can decide a one-shield battle when both Pokémon reach a charged move at nearly the same moment. The analysis reports Shadow Claw performing better in some Great League one-shield matchups, while Sucker Punch performs better in some other shield states. Both results were limited overall, so there is no universal “best” fast move independent of shields and opponents.

Ordinary Zoroark’s charged moves

Charged move Listed damage Energy cost Typical reason to consider it
Foul Play 65 40 Lowest-cost, reliable Dark damage and the normal pacing target
Night Shade 70 45 Alternative Ghost damage when the format rewards that coverage
Sludge Bomb 80 50 Coverage for targets vulnerable to Poison
Flamethrower 90 55 Coverage for targets vulnerable to Fire, at a slower cost

Adding a second charged move broadens coverage but does not add Defense or HP. If the Pokémon is fainting before it can use that coverage, the extra move is an expensive solution to the wrong problem. Ordinary Zoroark should therefore be built only after you can name the targets that the second move changes and confirm those targets occur in the cup or team environment you intend to play.

Why Hisuian Zoroark is usually the more interesting choice

Hisuian Zoroark’s Normal/Ghost typing is the clearest practical advantage. The Pokémon GO Hub game-specific chart lists Dark as its weakness; it lists resistances to Bug, Fighting, Ghost and Poison, plus a double resistance to Normal. Those interactions can turn a normally dangerous fast-move exchange into a farming opportunity. They also create a mind-game: an opponent may have to avoid a move that is efficient elsewhere because Hisuian Zoroark takes so little from it.

That defensive profile has limits. Dark attacks remain a direct weakness, and a resistance does not guarantee that Hisuian Zoroark wins the matchup. Energy, shields, attack and bulk, debuffs, baiting and the opponent’s second move all matter. The form is most valuable when its typing changes a specific interaction, not when it is inserted into a team without a plan.

Current Hisuian Zoroark league snapshots

League Recommended set Suggested build snapshot Displayed ranking
Great League Shadow Claw / Swift / Shadow Ball 0/15/11, level 21.5, 1,500 CP 440 of 1,143 eligible Pokémon
Ultra League Shadow Claw / Swift / Shadow Ball 1/15/15, level 40.5, 2,498 CP 386 of 841 eligible Pokémon
Master League Not established in the cited guide Not stated No ranking information provided

The displayed ranks are snapshots from a live database and may change. They should not be read as win percentages, tournament results or a permanent tier placement. No official or independently measured dataset in the available material establishes a universal win rate for either form.

Hisuian Zoroark’s move options

Move Listed damage Energy cost Role
Shadow Claw 3.0 damage per turn 4.0 energy per turn Recommended fast move for both Great and Ultra League
Snarl 1.67 damage per turn 4.33 energy per turn Higher energy generation, lower fast-move pressure
Swift 55 35 Low-cost move for pressure and baiting
Shadow Ball 90 50 Primary closing move and strong Ghost damage
Foul Play 65 40 Alternative Dark coverage
Sludge Bomb 80 50 Poison coverage for selected targets
Flamethrower 90 55 Fire coverage at a higher energy cost

The current Great and Ultra League recommendation is Shadow Claw with Swift and Shadow Ball. Swift costs 35 energy, giving the Pokémon a lower-cost option for forcing shields or applying pressure, while Shadow Ball supplies the heavier 50-energy hit. The set is coherent because both charged moves can be reached from the same energy-generating fast move without requiring an event-only fast move.

How to compare the forms for your own team

Do not compare a Great League Zoroark with an Ultra League Hisuian Zoroark, or a standard cup with open league, and then treat the result as a species verdict. Use the same ruleset and evaluate the five factors below.

1. Start with the opponent types that matter

List the Pokémon your team currently struggles to switch into. If those opponents rely on Normal, Ghost, Poison, Fighting or Bug attacks, Hisuian Zoroark’s resistances may create a meaningful role. If the cup is saturated with Dark damage, its weakness can make the form a liability. Ordinary Zoroark must account for Bug, Fighting and Fairy threats before it enters the lineup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Check energy timing, not just move power

Fast-move damage and energy generation pull in different directions. Ordinary Zoroark’s Sucker Punch has the highest listed damage but slower Foul Play pacing than Shadow Claw. Snarl generates energy fastest among the listed ordinary options but applies the least fast-move damage. For Hisuian Zoroark, Shadow Claw is the recommended balance for the cited Great and Ultra League set. Count turns to each charged move in the exact matchup instead of choosing by the largest damage number.

3. Compare the charged-move cost with expected shields

A 35-energy Swift can be useful when an opponent is likely to shield a bait, while a 50-energy Shadow Ball is more punishing if it lands. Ordinary Zoroark’s Foul Play costs 40 energy; Night Shade, Sludge Bomb and Flamethrower cost 45, 50 and 55 respectively. If the Pokémon rarely survives to a second move, a high-cost coverage move may never justify the second-move investment.

4. Run each shield state separately

A Pokémon can look acceptable with both players shielding and fail completely when shields are down. Test the matchup with two shields, one shield and zero shields, and note whether a move lands before the opponent’s next charged attack. The dated ordinary-Zoroark analysis specifically found different outcomes for Shadow Claw and Sucker Punch in different shield states, which is why a single ranking cannot answer every team question.

5. Assign a team role

Decide whether the form is your lead, safe swap, closer or specialist counter. A fragile Pokémon that works only after shields are removed is a closer, not a safe swap. Hisuian Zoroark’s resistances may support a switch role in a favorable pairing, but its Dark weakness means you should identify the teammate that covers Dark attackers. Ordinary Zoroark needs even more protection because its low defensive figures leave little room for a neutral fast-move battle.

Step-by-step: choosing which one to build

  1. Choose the league and format first. Set Great League, Ultra League or the named cup in your battle simulator and confirm the current CP cap and eligible species.
  2. Write down three target matchups. Use opponents you actually expect to face, not a theoretical list from another league. Include at least one lead, one switch and one endgame scenario.
  3. Enter the exact movesets. Test ordinary Zoroark with Shadow Claw and Foul Play, then compare Sucker Punch where it is available. Test Hisuian Zoroark with Shadow Claw, Swift and Shadow Ball as the current baseline.
  4. Record shield outcomes. For each target, note the result with two shields, one shield and no shields. Record whether you win, lose or reach a close farm-down, and whether the result depends on baiting.
  5. Check the type interactions manually. Confirm that the apparent win comes from the form’s typing or move timing rather than an opponent moveset that is uncommon in your format.
  6. Verify the build before powering up. Check the CP, level and IV spread against the league cap. The cited snapshots use 0/15/11 at level 21.5 and 1,500 CP for Hisuian Great League, and 1/15/15 at level 40.5 and 2,498 CP for Hisuian Ultra League; your specimen may require a different level to stay under the cap.
  7. Spend resources only after the role is clear. A second charged move is most defensible when it changes a matchup you identified in step two. Do not unlock it simply because the Pokémon has two available coverage types.
  8. Recheck after move or cup changes. Rankings and simulations can change, and a restricted cup can make a mid-pack species valuable for a short period. Re-run the same target list before committing additional resources.

Great League versus Ultra League

Great League

Great League magnifies fast-move timing and IV trade-offs because many matchups are decided by a few turns or a small amount of remaining health. Ordinary Zoroark’s cited example is 157 Attack, 88 Defense and 103 HP, or a listed high-stat-product variation of 155 Attack and 105 HP. Its suggested 1/15/15 build reaches 1,496 CP at level 21.5. Those numbers illustrate the need to check the individual specimen rather than assuming that “best IVs” always means 15/15/15.

Hisuian Zoroark’s current Great League snapshot recommends 0/15/11 at level 21.5 and 1,500 CP, with a displayed rank of 440 out of 1,143 eligible Pokémon. That position is not elite, but a restricted cup that rewards its resistances can be a substantially better environment than open Great League.

Ultra League

Ultra League increases the cost of a mistake because powering up near the 2,500 CP cap can require far more Stardust and Candy. Ordinary Zoroark’s cited example lists 202 Attack, 113 Defense and 134 HP, with a high-stat-product variation of 201 Attack, 114 Defense and 136 HP; the suggested 1/15/15 example reaches 2,497 CP at level 42. The October 9 analysis still characterizes ordinary Zoroark as poor in Ultra League despite those larger numbers.

Hisuian Zoroark’s Ultra League snapshot recommends 1/15/15 at level 40.5 and 2,498 CP, with a displayed rank of 386 out of 841. That is a usable specialist position, not evidence that it belongs on every open Ultra League team. Confirm the live format and your intended matchups before investing at this level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Master League

The cited Hisuian Zoroark guide provides no Master League ranking information, and the available ordinary-Zoroark analysis does not establish a Master League case. Absence of a ranking is not a matchup result. Unless a current cup specifically enables the form, do not infer that a Great or Ultra League recommendation transfers to Master League.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Choosing by appearance or novelty. The Hisuian form’s unusual design does not replace a type and shield analysis.
  • Treating a rank as a permanent tier. PvPoke states that exact rankings may change as its simulator and algorithms improve. A displayed number is a dated estimate.
  • Calling Sucker Punch a complete fix. It adds fast-move damage, but the cited analysis still finds ordinary Zoroark exceptionally fragile and reports different results by shield state.
  • Comparing unlike simulations. League, cup, opponent pool, moveset and shield assumptions must match before two results are meaningfully compared.
  • Ignoring the second charged move’s cost. Sludge Bomb and Flamethrower may add useful coverage, but their 50- and 55-energy costs are difficult to reach on a frail Pokémon.
  • Using a Master League conclusion that was never established. No Master ranking information is supplied for Hisuian Zoroark in the cited guide.
  • Powering up before checking the CP cap. The example levels and CP values are snapshots for particular IV spreads, not universal upgrade instructions.

A practical decision framework

If your situation is… Better choice Why
You want one form for experimental Great or Ultra League play Hisuian Zoroark It has the clearer current moveset guidance and a distinctive resistance profile
Your cup rewards Normal, Ghost, Poison, Fighting or Bug interactions Hisuian Zoroark Its listed resistances can create matchup-specific value
Your expected opponents are rich in Dark attacks Neither by default Hisuian Zoroark is weak to Dark, while ordinary Zoroark remains vulnerable to Fighting, Bug and Fairy
You need a durable open-league safe swap Neither The available analysis does not support ordinary Zoroark as a strong open-league option, and Hisuian Zoroark’s ranks are mid-pack snapshots
You have a restricted cup matchup that ordinary Zoroark specifically flips Ordinary Zoroark A deliberate specialist use can justify it despite its general fragility
You are considering an expensive Ultra League build without identified targets Wait The cited Ultra League results do not make either form a universal investment

What the ranking sources can and cannot tell you

Ranking sites are useful for narrowing the search, but they are not official ratings. PvPoke explains that its rankings come from simulated matchups and that exact positions can change as its simulator and algorithms improve. A rank therefore depends on the selected league, moveset, shield assumptions, opponent set and simulation methodology. It is not a permanent statement about the Pokémon’s value.

The current Hisuian Zoroark figures—440/1,143 in Great League and 386/841 in Ultra League—should be read in that context. They indicate that the form is not near the top of the broad eligible field in those snapshots, while still leaving room for cup-specific value. The ordinary-Zoroark assessment is a dated analyst simulation updated October 9, 2026; it should be attributed to that analysis rather than presented as an official Pokémon GO ruling.

Final recommendation

For a direct choice between the forms, build Hisuian Zoroark first if you have a specific Great League or Ultra League team that benefits from Normal/Ghost resistances. Start with Shadow Claw, Swift and Shadow Ball, then verify the live rankings and run the three shield scenarios against the opponents you expect. Its value comes from turning particular attacks into low-damage interactions and applying two different charged-move pressures—not from being a universally dominant species.

Keep ordinary Zoroark as a specialist project. Shadow Claw generally reaches Foul Play sooner than Sucker Punch, while Sucker Punch supplies more fast-move damage; the cited October 2026 analysis finds that the better choice changes with shield state and still rates the species poorly overall, especially in Ultra League. If you cannot name the matchup, cup or team role that ordinary Zoroark improves, save your resources for a more reliable option.

The correct answer can change when the format, move availability or simulator assumptions change. Recheck the current cup rules and the exact moveset before teaching a second charged move or investing at the 2,500 CP cap.
