CVE-2026-79993 lets a network-reachable client bypass checks in Apache ZooKeeper’s internal deleteContainer request path and delete eligible empty znodes. Apache lists ZooKeeper 3.9.0–3.9.5 and 3.8.0–3.8.6 as affected, and recommends upgrading to 3.9.6 or 3.8.7, respectively. The issue does not describe deletion of non-empty znodes.
What the ZooKeeper deleteContainer ACL bypass does
Apache ZooKeeper identifies CVE-2026-79993 as a missing authorization check in the internal deleteContainer opcode, 0x14 (decimal 20). Unlike the regular delete opcode (2), this request path skips both session validation and the DELETE ACL check. As a result, an attacker can delete eligible empty znodes even when ACL restrictions would block a regular delete. Apache’s security advisory describes the vulnerability and its impact.
The affected targets are empty persistent znodes, including regular persistent nodes, container nodes, and TTL nodes. The advisory does not say that non-empty znodes can be deleted through this issue.

Although deleteContainer is intended for internal use and the official ZooKeeper client exposes no API for it, a client that can open a plain TCP session to the ZooKeeper client port can send the raw protocol opcode. Apache identifies port 2181 as the default and says exploitation can occur without authentication or ACL permissions. Network reachability to the client port is therefore the relevant exposure to assess.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
CVE-2026-79993 affected versions and fixed releases
| ZooKeeper branch | Affected versions | Apache-recommended fixed release |
|---|---|---|
| 3.9 | 3.9.0 through 3.9.5 | 3.9.6 |
| 3.8 | 3.8.0 through 3.8.6 | 3.8.7 |
These ranges and remediation versions are stated in Apache’s advisory; a disclosure notice dated September 15, 2026 repeats them. Match the installed version to its branch: a 3.9 deployment should move to 3.9.6 or later, while a 3.8 deployment should move to 3.8.7 or later. The advisory identifies these releases as fixes for this issue.
How to respond
- Inventory deployed ZooKeeper versions. Check each server or deployment and record its branch and exact version.
- Compare versions with the affected ranges. Treat 3.9.0–3.9.5 and 3.8.0–3.8.6 as affected according to Apache.
- Upgrade affected deployments. Follow Apache’s guidance to use 3.9.6 or 3.8.7 on the corresponding branch, using the deployment process appropriate to your environment.
- Assess network reachability to the client port. Because the described request can be sent over a plain TCP client session, review which systems can reach that port while arranging the upgrade.
Apache’s release-notes index provides release context, including the ZooKeeper 3.9.5 release notes. The security advisory is the source for this vulnerability’s affected ranges and fix recommendation.

What is and is not established
Apache’s advisory documents the missing session and DELETE ACL checks, the raw-opcode network path, affected version ranges, and recommended fixed releases. It does not explain the implementation-level patch, so conclusions about the precise code change would go beyond the published description.
