The “PK” in PKWARE stands for Phil Katz, the programmer the Library of Congress identifies as the developer of the original ZIP format. But the initials are not a signature hidden inside every archive: they appear in the company name, while a ZIP file has its own recognizable structure of headers, file data, and a directory of contents.
What does “PK” stand for?
It refers to Phil Katz. The Library of Congress says Katz developed the original ZIP format and explains the connection to the company name as “hence the ‘PK’ in PKWARE.” The initials are therefore associated with the format through its creator and the company that documented it—not a personal mark embedded in every ZIP archive. Who invented the ZIP file?
The Library of Congress credits Phil Katz with developing the original format. A separate historical account in the Common ZIP Spec says the format was placed in the public domain in 1989 by Katz and Gary Conway. These accounts describe different aspects of the history: one identifies Katz as the developer, while the other names Katz and Conway in connection with the public-domain release. They do not establish a precise division of work between the two.

A ZIP file is a container for one or more files. It can compress the contents and may also encrypt them. Its structure includes local file headers and file data, followed by a central directory that records filenames and metadata used for listing and extracting files. The Library of Congress’s ZIP format record describes these components.

That central directory is a practical part of how the archive works: it gives software a catalog of the contained files and information needed to handle them. The format is thus more than a set of compressed bytes, and the letters “PK” are not the feature that makes an archive a ZIP file.
How did ZIP become more than an archive program?
The first ZIP specification was published in 1990, according to the Library of Congress. PKWARE continued to maintain the format specification in APPNOTE.TXT, and ZIP evolved with attention to backward compatibility. The Library of Congress’s version 6.3.3 record covers the format’s development and structure; its broader ZIP format record discusses its evolution and uses.

ZIP’s reach also reflects its usefulness as a container format. The Library of Congress identifies ZIP-based packaging in Office Open XML and OpenDocument Format, so the format appears inside document ecosystems as well as in standalone archives. The ZIP name therefore describes a broadly reused file structure, not just one utility or a single programmer’s application.
