Zimbabwean writer Simbarashe Steyn Kundizeza says he wrote his award-winning story “The Blue Fighter” himself, after an Atlantic report said an AI detector classified almost all of it as machine-generated. The Caine Prize has opened a review but has not withdrawn the award or announced a final finding.
What triggered the controversy
Kundizeza won the 2026 Caine Prize for African Writing for “The Blue Fighter.” The prize’s synopsis describes Tinashe, a boy whose family faces financial hardship after his father leaves his profession to build fish tanks. The story examines fatherhood, ambition and the consequences of family circumstances.
Five days after the winner was announced on 6 October, journalist Vauhini Vara reported in The Atlantic that the AI-detection service Pangram flagged almost the entire story as AI-generated. The detector did not flag an epigraph credited to an unpublished poem by South African writer Vangile Gantsho. Vara also reported that Pangram classified Kundizeza’s 2021 story “The Whistleblower” as human-written.
Those results are an automated classification reported by a journalist, not a completed authorship investigation. They do not establish that ChatGPT or another generative-AI system wrote the story.

What Kundizeza says
In a public statement quoted by The Guardian, Kundizeza rejected the allegation categorically: “For the avoidance of doubt, I wrote ‘The Blue Fighter’. I did not use generative AI to write it. It is entirely my own work.”
The Associated Press reported that he said the story drew on his family’s experiences and had passed through ordinary editorial processes. He described it as a personal account of economic collapse and family relationships.

He also objected to the assumption that a change in style proves outside assistance: “To suggest that a writer cannot write in different styles or genres, or improve his writing substantially after five or more years, fundamentally misunderstands the craft of writing.”

Has the Caine Prize taken back the award?
No. The Caine Prize has not retracted Kundizeza’s award. Organizers say the claim is under review and that they will use a human-centered process while examining it. Coverage from the Associated Press and The Guardian reported no final decision.

Board chair Ellah Wakatama has questioned whether detector output can fairly decide a writer’s authorship. In a BBC statement quoted by The Guardian, she said she was not comfortable with writers—“in this case especially black writers”—becoming testing subjects for technology that remains “at best still rough and ready.” The Atlantic quoted her saying that an accusation should require proof that does not come from a machine.

The public record therefore contains a detector signal, a direct denial and an unresolved institutional review. It does not contain published drafts, writing metadata, editorial records or a human-authorship determination that would independently settle the question.

Can an AI detector prove a story was written by AI?
Not on the evidence currently reported in this case. The Guardian noted that independent research on detector accuracy is limited, while The Atlantic described Pangram’s claimed low false-positive rate alongside the lack of broad independent research confirming how such systems perform across different writers, languages and literary styles.

A classification can therefore be a reason to investigate, but it is not the same as proof of tool use. A reliable determination would ordinarily need corroborating material such as version history, drafts, correspondence with editors or other evidence reviewed by people who understand the work’s production.

Why race and literary context matter
The dispute has also raised concerns about racial bias and cultural specificity. The Associated Press and The Guardian reported fears that Black writers, African writers and other authors whose English, idioms or narrative conventions differ from dominant training data could face disproportionate suspicion. A detector that performs unevenly across varieties of English could turn stylistic difference into an accusation.
That concern does not prove either side’s account. It explains why the prize board is resisting a detector-only judgment and why any conclusion should account for the story’s editorial history and the limits of the technology used to flag it.
Prize amount and what is still unknown
The Atlantic reported that the 2026 Caine Prize carries £10,000. The Associated Press described the value as $10,000, apparently reflecting a dollar conversion or reporting convention. Readers should rely on the prize organization’s final wording if it publishes an updated monetary figure.
The unresolved questions are straightforward: whether the review finds credible evidence of generative-AI use, what evidence the organizers consider sufficient, and whether the prize issues a final statement. Until that happens, “The Blue Fighter” remains the winning story, Kundizeza remains its author according to his own account, and the AI-writing claim remains unproven.
